Open Craft Wednesdays OP will be holding open craft Wednesdays at the
museum for those interested in sharing ideas and skills. Bring something you are working on and enjoy some company and refreshments. We will be doing some
chatting about coordinating one formal activity/workshop per month based on your ideas and interests. Everyone
welcome and all crafts welcome. 3:00 to 6:00. Light snacks and refreshments too! Hope to see you there for
some laughing and crafting. Call us if you need a ride, we would be happy
to pick you up and take you home.
MUSEUM The museum is open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm. Please bring us your original work and we would be
happy to consign it for you. Just a reminder that once an item is here on consignment,
you can always pick it up if you need it back. We have people in almost daily looking for moccasins.
Community Members Wanted! Seeking dancers, drummers, speakers and any other gift
you may have! We are currently compiling a list of potential speakers/dancers/elders to fulfill requests that come in to the community for various events. Please

Or Any Other Type of Traditional Craft? If so we are seeking to compile a list of community members to facilitate workshops on these topics. Must be able to teach and troubleshoot the work.

Aboriginal Community Energy Plan
In 2011, Chief and Council approved the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation Comprehensive Community Plan. The Comprehensive Community Plan identifies priorities based on the community members input and participation in the developmental stages. The plan is in effect for 10 years.
The community members are clear that they want to live in a cleaner environment and support efforts to become a greener community. People see this as an essential part of their character as First Nation Peoples, and would like to safeguard the well-being of the future generations to come.
Two identified community goals are:
The community to become an advocate for a “Green Community“ by reducing energy use and using more renewable energy sources. (Community Priority #7, pg. 40).
Adapt the built environment to improve both energy use and efficiency. (Community Priority # 10 pg.43)
These priorities require the following action:
Access funding
Contract energy advisor
Develop community energy action plan
Implement plan and complete audits
Energy audit of First Nation rental housing units (identification and prioritizing units)
Energy audit of member owned homes
Energy Audits of community buildings and/or specific areas such as Makwa Center, Daycare, Small Business Center, Administration, Health, Long Term Care, Cultural Center, etc.
The results of this project will be the development of a community energy plan that identifies and promotes energy conservation measures, identifies resources for infrastructure improvements for energy use and efficiency, assessment of feasibility of establishing community renewable energy projects.
The Ontario Power Authority’s Aboriginal Community Energy Program has approved an application from the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan to complete a Community Energy Plan. Jazz Solar Solutions has been retained as the Energy Advisor and will be completing the extensive audits. Work will continue through to spring 2015.
We are seeking 6 volunteers who would like to have their homes extensively audited under this process. Our goal is to have a variety of homes based on size and age.

select effective teaching and learning strategies; and
develop curriculum for the program

Changes to Native Language Program
Dear Parents/Guardians: This September brings some changes to our Native language program. In hopes of making this option available to more students, Native language will be taught this year through Native arts. The program is open to all Native and non-Native students in Grades 4 to 8 who want to learn a Native language and develop a better understanding of the culture of which that language forms part. Kindergarten students will continue to receive 30 minutes of Native language instruction per week. Visual arts, dance, drama, and music will be instructed through the Algonquin language with a focus on the use of language in the classroom in relevant contexts and for relevant purposes. Students who are interested in this option will still be able to take French, as Native language will now be scheduled at a different time than our French program for these students. If you would like to sign your son/daughter up for Native language instruction through the Arts, please complete the form below and return it to the school by Friday September 5, 2014. The expectation is that if your child signs up for this program, they will continue for the full school year. If we do not hear back from you, we will assume that you are not interested in this for your child (ren). Share your story with photos We are seeking First Nations, Inuit, and Métis women who have cancer
experiences and who are willing to share their experiences through
photography, group discussions, and interviews.
We are interested in knowing:
*About your experiences with breast cancer *How it affects your life *Support needed
Our research aims to further understanding of life as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis women living with the effects of cancer.
This may help health professionals and others to better understand women’s experiences. The research may also help other women living with cancer.
Honouraria will be provided to participants for each phase of the research ($25/phase).
