Carleton University – Aboriginal Enriched Support Program

Are you an Aboriginal person interested in the transition to university studies? Have you been out of school for a while, or just recently graduated from high school or college? Do you have the potential for university studies, but do not meet the traditional entrance requirements? The Aboriginal Enriched Support Program (AESP) at Carleton University is a small program designed for Aboriginal students (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) to qualify for university admission while enrolled in first-year courses. For more information contact:

Patricia Reynolds, AESP Coordinator (613) 520-2600 ext. #8158 [email protected] Naomi Sarazin, Aboriginal Cultural Liaison Officer (613) 520-2600 ext. #1468 [email protected]

Announcing a New Community

Program

Several weeks ago we asked for volunteers to help with a new program called “The Lunch Box”. Thanks to these volunteers and our special funding, the program is almost ready to go and we are very excited to share it with the community. The Lunch Box program is intended to assist people to put nutritious food on the table. Unlike a food bank, where you choose your own groceries, the Lunch Box is an actual plastic container filled with all the non-perishable ingredients and instructions needed to make a nutritious, quick and easy meal for four people. There will be a choice of meals available each week, such as vegetable chowder, turkey with stuffing or tuna-noodle casserole. Each meal also comes with fruit for dessert. People who would like to receive a “Lunch Box” just need to telephone or stop by the Health Centre. You will be asked to sign-up for that week and can then come and pick up your box. Once the box is empty, it must be returned to the Health Centre within 1 week so that it can be re-filled and given out again. If you need to, you can ask for a new lunch box every week that the program runs.

We will be accepting requests starting Tuesday, May 1st, 2012. For more information or to sign-up, please call Reception at Health Services

613 625 2259 and ask about “The Lunch Box Program”.

The Lunch Box is a confidential program that respects your privacy. Your information is not shared with any other program or department.

TEMP HELP We are updating our Temp Help list as people change phone

numbers or are now employed, so if you are interested in being in our list you will need to contact us to

resubmit an application so we know who is interested and to get the updated information needed.

Sometimes a short term assignment can lead to something long-

er and sometimes we can give referrals to outside agencies looking for workers. The temp help list is also

available for those people in receipt of EI.

Tennisco Manor and the Day Care manage their own temp help lists so to be on these lists you

must contact them directly.

To update our records contact Elsie Commanda at (613) 625-2800 ext 248.

RENFREW COUNTY CLERK-TREASURER ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT – Noreen Mellema c/o 2508 Russett Drive R.R. #2 Arnprior, Ontario K7S 3G8

The organizing committee for our Annual Renfrew County Clerk-Treasurers Association Golf Tournament wants to say a big THANK YOU to all who participated in our Annual Golf Tournament in 2011.

This event raised $4,606.01 for CHEO, bringing our total donation to date, to $69,606.51. This is an amazing

accomplishment, and we want to thank all of you for helping to make this happen.

To our corporate sponsors, businesses and municipalities in Renfrew County, thank you for showing your continued help and support. We appreciate and thank you for your financial assistance, for donating prizes, and

for coming out to participate in this event.

This year is our 20th anniversary of our Annual Golf Tournament. We are hoping that you will join us again on June 8, 2012 at the Oaks of Cobden as we celebrate this milestone. Please set this date aside and come out

to enjoy a day filled with sunshine (we have already put in our order) good friends, great food and the opportunity to help CHEO to continue their vital work across Eastern Ontario.

You don’t have to be a golfer to participate. Many of our participants only come out once or twice a year, but don’t miss out on this opportunity to support those children and their families across Eastern Ontario

who needs the services that CHEO can provide.

We hope to make this years’ tournament the best yet, but we need your help and support to do that. If you participated last year, we look forward to seeing you again in 2012, and if you haven’t

participated before, 2012 is the year to start.

Come out and help us to celebrate our 20th!

Yours sincerely Organizing Committee, RCCTA Golf Tournament Ann Bain Lorna Hudder Pat Pilgrim Sue Sheridan

Pikwàkanagàn in Search of Foster Parents We are in search for Aboriginal foster parents who are licensed,

or individuals who are willing to take the training to become a foster parent.

Foster parents work together with Pikwàkanagàn Child & Family

Services/ Family & Children’s Services of Renfrew County staff to develop a plan for each child in care. The ideal plan is usually to reunite a young person with his

or her family. When a reunion is not possible, the plan may require long-term foster care.

Foster families play an essential role in the child's daily life. The stable and caring home environment that foster families provide helps encourage healthy

growth and development.
