NATIVE AMERICAN PRAYER

I give you this one thought to keep-

I am with you still- I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am sunlight on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awake in the morning's hush

I am the swift, uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone- I am with you still- in each new dawn.

A JUSTICE/HEALING PROGRAM

FOR PIKWAKANAGAN

What is Restorative Justice? Restorative justice is a process where those affected by an incident of wrong-doing come together, in a safe and controlled environment, to share their opinions and feelings truthfully and resolve together how to best deal with the aftermath.

It is an alternative to the traditional justice system that seeks to move beyond jail sentences and punishment to address both the causes and consequences – personal, relational, societal – of offending in ways that promote accountability, healing, and justice. The goal of restorative justice is to keep offenders out of the court system and allow the opportunity to explore the underlying causes of crime.

What is the difference between the traditional justice system and a restorative justice/healing system?

The traditional justice system views crime as an individual act with individual responsibility. The goal is to establish blame and guilt in an effort to deter crime and change behaviour through punishment.

Restorative justice views crime as harm done to people and relationships. This process gives the victim a voice to talk about the impacts of the crime. It requires the offender to take responsibility and to be held accountable for their actions. It also allows the community to become an active member in the resolution of the crime.

TRADITIONAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

FOCUSES ON CONDEMNATION AND PUNISHMENT

When a crime is committed, the person who broke the law will be arrested and charged.

The court then receives the charges, and will determine if the case should proceed to trial.

If the case goes to trial, and the offender is found guilty, a sentence will follow. This can include fines, probation, community service, and/or a jail sentence.

The offender will have a criminal record, which will impact many things, including future employability.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE SYSTEM FOCUSES ON HEALING AND RESTORING HARMONY

When a crime is committed, the person who broke the

law may be arrested and may be charged. The OPP may refer the person to a healing/justice program.

If charged, the court will receive the charges, and will determine if the case should proceed to trial or be diverted to a restorative justice/healing program.

If the offender accepts responsibility for the crime, a circle will be held as part of the justice/healing program.

If the offender successfully completes the program, they will not have a criminal record.

What might Pikwakanagan’s Justice/Healing Program look like?

Through the facilitation of circles, our justice/healing program will bring together those affected by a crime. In the safe space of the circle, those affected will be given the opportunity to tell their story. This process will promote understanding and healing within the community.

Victims can be certain that the offender understands the impact the crime, find answers to questions, and help to identify what can be done to repair the harm.

Offenders can tell their side of the story and can accept responsibility for the harm caused. They learn how their behaviour affected others and participate in determining what can be done to repair the harm.

Together, those affected by the crime will come up with meaningful solutions. This can include anything from letters of apology, community service, educational speaking engagements about the effects of crimes, to the completion of rehabilitation or counselling programs. The goal of restorative justice is healing and the restoration of harmony. It is about reintegration of both victims and offenders within the community.

What can you do? Communities have an obligation to sustain harmony, to acknowledge and address the social causes of crime, and to make space for both victims and offenders to be restored within the community. Because restorative justice is grounded in community involvement, it is not possible to implement a comprehensive system without community ownership and support.

We ask for your participation in developing a justice/healing program for Pikwakanagan. This program cannot be successful without the ideas and opinions of our community. This information, along with a questionnaire, has been sent by mail to our members residing in Renfrew County.

We ask that the questionnaire be completed and returned using the self-addressed envelope. We ask that this be completed by December 15, 2017. The answers provided will be analyzed and the needs of our members will be incorporated into the justice/healing program.

Your participation is greatly appreciated!

For any questions, or further information, please contact Christine Hutchinson at (613) 625-2800 (ext. 249) or [email protected].

WEEKLY SAFETY TIPS FOR SENIORS

FOR SENIORS WHO LIVE ALONE

Keep Emergency Numbers Nearby

Accidents are unpredictable, so it's very important to

prepare for the worst. Keeping a list of emergency

numbers near each phone, and another in your purse

or wallet is critical. Programming these numbers into

your smartphone is important as well. The list should

include a close family member or friend's contact

number, your health care provider's office, poison

control and 911.

Create A Fall-Proof Living Environment

Did you know that 60 percent of falls happen at

home? Making simple changes in your living space

can help accidents from occurring.

Get To Know Your Neighbors

Having at least a causal relationship with those who

live around you can be helpful in an emergency

situation.

Install Motion Sensor Lighting

By installing motion sensor lighting outside your

home, intruders will be less likely to sneak around. If

anyone makes it near your windows or doors, the

lights will turn on and they'll assume you're home

and flee.

Improve Fire Safety

Fire prevention is a key for staying safe in your

home. To reduce your risk of experiencing a fire, it is

recommended to install smoke alarms in an area of

easy reach in every bedroom, as well as the other

quiet and secluded areas in your house. Be sure to

test the alarms once a month and change the batteries

when necessary.

If a fire does occur, get out as soon as possible and

don't go back in for anything. Call the fire

department and remain calm.

Request A Weekly Check-In

Ask a close family member, friend or neighbor to

call or visit once a week to check in. It can either be

a quick conversation, or you can make it into an

excuse to mingle. Turn the brief visit into a dinner

date so you can get caught up with each other's lives.

NOVEMBER IS FALL PREVENTION MONTH!

Fall Prevention Month is a campaign that

encourages Canadian organizations and individuals

to come together to coordinate fall prevention efforts

for a larger impact.

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older

adults. The average Canadian older adult stays in

hospital 10 days longer for falls than for any other

cause,

Over 1/3 of older adults will be admitted to

long-term care after hospitalization for a fall.

Falls in older adults are for the most part predictable

and preventable!

Please see attached checklist to learn how you can

protect yourself and your loved ones.
