Pikwakanagan Tibadjumowin – September 18, 2020

1. Eat clean: this includes low fat and low-calorie foods which include the following:

✓ Fruits with complex carbohydrates

✓ Vegetables

✓ Lean meats

✓ Whole Grains

✓ Healthy fats ( avocado, fish)

2. Regular Exercise: This is grest for energy and mental health but also lowers blood sugar by increasing insulin sensitivity. Exercise will actually reduce blood sugar for up to 24 hrs after a workout. If you're new to exercise, start slowly. Start with light activity for 15-20 minutes and gradually increase the length and intensity of the workouts after a few days. The goal is to reach 30-60 minutes of moderate activity at least 5 days a week. Do things that you love, which may include.

✓ Walking

✓ Biking

✓ Jogging

✓ Swimming

✓ Aerobics

✓ Playing sports

✓ Dancing

3. Lose exercise weight: losing 5 to 10% of body fat will improve your blood sugar levels, for some people, this looks like 10 to 20 pounds. This will be a much easier process if you are making sure you are eating clean and exercis-ing regularly.

4. Stop smoking: not only does smoking increase our risk of heart disease and lung cancer, it is also a risk factor in insulin resistance, prediabe-tes, and type 2 diabetes.

5. Eat fewer carbs: Choose your carbs carefully. Focus on eating complex carbs. These are un-processed foods, rich in fibre and keep you full for longer

✓ Vegetables

✓ Whole grains

✓ Beans

6. Treat sleep apnea: This condition has been associated with insulin resistance. This is a condition where breathing stops repeatedly throughout your sleep due to relaxing throat muscles. Signs of sleep apnea:

✓ Loud snoring

✓ Gasps of air during sleep

✓ Choking during sleep

✓ Waking up with headache

✓ Daytime sleepiness

Treatment for sleep apnea often involves either an oral appliance while sleeping that keeps the throat open or CPAP machine (continuous positive airway pressure) to keep airway passages open.

7. Drink more water: Water helps control blood sugar levels and is a healthy substitute for sodas or fruit juices.

8. Work with a dietician/nutritionist: These professionals can provide guidance and advice on what foods to eat and what to avoid.

When to get help:

If you implement these 8 tips, your blood sugar levels should improve. However, if for some reason they do not, and you are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, your Dr or NP may prescribe some medications for you that will help. If you are starting to develop the following early signs, please see your Dr or NP:

✓ Increased urination

✓ Unusual hunger

✓ Blurry Vision

✓ Fatigue

✓ Increased thirst

Want to know if you are at risk for pre-diabetes?
