PLEASE BE AWARE!!!

It has come to my attention that a used syringe (needle) has been found on the side of the road by one of our com-munity members. It cannot be stressed enough the im-portance of safe handling and proper disposal of used sy-ringes. This is a very hazardous and threatening issue to all community mem-bers when used syringes are left to be found by our chil-dren, youth or any member of the community. It is fortunate that in this particular situation the community member knew enough to safely handle the syringe and place a call to the Health Centre. This is an important reminder to all community members that all syringes can be brought to the Health Centre where we will ensure they are handled safely and disposed of properly. Please, please, please talk to your children and remind them never to touch any needles and to tell an adult should they see one lying around. To any and all community members who utilize syringes please be sure to continue to use safe handling and disposal techniques for your syringes…..

Let’s keep our members safe and our community clean!

ELDER’S MEETINGS The Elders next meeting will be

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 7:00 pm.

The Elders’ Committee

Volunteers Needed!

Last spring, a survey went through the community of Pikwàkanagàn asking about people’s feelings and beliefs about being able to get all the safe, culturally appropriate

food they need. Most people in the community were more concerned about the cost of food than anything else. A focus group (talking circle) met to discuss this, and

everyone thought that the community would benefit from a free/low cost weekly lunch program.

Unfortunately, such a program would mean a huge amount of work: shopping and food storage,

meal preparation, serving and clean-up, not to mention possible health regulation issues. That is a lot of

responsibility for a small group of volunteers, but is an idea that may be explored in the future.

The good news is that we have funding for a smaller

project that would still help people have access healthy food when they are running short on money. This pilot

project, called “The Lunch Box” would let people sign up for the program and get

a re-usable box full of food. Unlike a food bank, where you choose your own

groceries, the box would be filled with all the non-perishable ingredients and instructions needed

for one or more meals, such as chili, soup or casserole. People registered for the program would call ahead and

choose one box each week of the program; any “left-over” boxes would be available

on a first-come, first-serve basis.

We need volunteers to make this work! People will be needed to help put the boxes together, to copy instructions, to deliver boxes to the Health Centre

and others to home-deliver to those in special circumstances. If you can spare a few hours to help, and can promise to help for the 4 weeks of the pilot project, please call Health Services at 613 625 2259 and ask to leave a message for Michele Smith, the Diabetes Nurse.

Refreshments will be served! Meegwetch for your help!

Pikwàkanagàn in Search of Foster Parents We are in search for Aboriginal foster parents who are licensed,

or individuals who are willing to take the training to become a foster parent.

Foster parents work together with Pikwàkanagàn Child & Family

Services/ Family & Children’s Services of Renfrew County staff to develop a plan for each child in care. The ideal plan is usually to reunite a young person with his

or her family. When a reunion is not possible, the plan may require long-term foster care.

Foster families play an essential role in the child's daily life. The stable and caring home environment that foster families provide helps encourage healthy

growth and development.

If you are interested in this ever rewarding opportunity and would like more information please
