current and ongoing issues that we face

as an industry in a fun and engaging

session. !e audience was split into

groups and asked to brainstorm ideas

on ways that our association can better

communicate our issues and ideas with

MLAs. Some great ideas came out of

the discussion such as using social

media and inviting them to our events.

Alberta Executive Panel

!is panel was a great addition to our

conference! Executives from some of

Alberta’s largest insurance companies

answered questions from brokers on

topics that are impacting us and our

businesses right now. Questions

included “What initiatives are being

taken to promote e-business?” and

“How will your insurance company

handle the increased frequency of

catastrophic losses other than rate

increases?” !e panel was moderated

by IBAA past president Dean Bailey

who did a wonderful job of presenting

the questions to the panel while adding

some humour along the way! Our next

newsletter will include the executives’

answers to the questions asked during

the panel session as well as the remain-

ing questions that were not discussed.

Personal Excellence:

Achieving Your Full Potential

with Catriona Le May Doan

Catriona shared her insights on

achieving goals and her career highs and

lows. She inspired the audience to reach

further than anyone thought possible by

sharing her stories as an Olympic speed

skater. Her presentation delivered a

message of achieving your full potential

through passion, a winning attitude,

commitment and teamwork.

Western-!emed Tradeshow &

Hoedown

!e tradeshow was a great opportunity

for brokers and company representatives

to network with peers. In keeping with

our western theme, there were vintage

photo booths and photos on a bull.

We want to thank all of our company

representatives who helped make the

tradeshow a big success. Everyone had a

great time with the country line dancing

troop and the mechanical bull.

From November 16 to 17, IBAA held

its annual fall conference in Calgary.

!e conference was sponsored by the

Professional Young Insurance Brokers

and open to all member brokers and

industry partners. IBAA’s fall confer-

ence is one of two annual events (the

other is the annual IBAA convention in

May) where brokers can network with

each other and industry partners. !e

event also o+ers continuing education

credits through presentations by mo-

tivating public speakers and executives

from some of Alberta’s largest insurance

companies. Here are a few highlights

from the event.
