Technology Has Contributed to a
decrease in Literacy Skills
As a direct influence from texting, today’s students
have adopted slang, abbreviations and acronyms
in place of using proper grammar.
Because of Technology, we all choose to not speak in person so much and rather text to communicate and get straight to the point. Unfortunately, the line between formal and
informal grammar has begun to blur.
Texting has Changed the way grammar is being used
Social media users see their friend’s success and begin to compare their own lives. This has various effects on their
emotions, and could cause a serious decreasein self esteem.
The Ugly Side of Social Media
Negative Side Effects of
TechnologyNot only has technology hindered written correspondence skills, but it has affected the way in which humans interact, feel and communicate
with our world. This can be seen in three key factors...
● Frustration● Lack of Patience
● Lack of Social Skills● Lack of writing skills
Frustration
Today’s youth have spent an immense amount of time indulging in Technology. Texting, playing video games and internet usage has
negatively affected their psyche. This results in an increased amount of frustration, when asked to participate in real life activities. We also
become frustrated about small things such as changes in layout and user interface within Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, making it difficult to
findcertain links you were able to reach before.
Lack of PatienceLightening speeds are relished with today’s current technology
standards. Because society holds speed with such high regard, patience has become a scarce virtue. For instance, news before was word of mouth or accessed by physically going to a newstand. Now, the news is right at
our fingertips. With just a few clicks we have the latest reports, team scores and announcements.
Lack of Social SkillsBecause technology allows
communication in the form of social media and text messages, people no longer have to rely on face to face interaction. This results in the absence of social skills in today’s youth. Digital communication is fast and convenient and is heavily relied on. These advancements have hindered physical interaction skills. Basic human interaction is now appearing to quickly become obsolete. Many teens today live two lives, the real and the virtual world. They play video games online with friends instead of going outside to play which also has something to do with the increase in teen obesity. Teens real life is boring so they try to amp up their virtual lives with crazy posts to make it seem like they are having fun. This lack of social skills has created a society that does not posses the basic fundamentals of human interaction and conversation.
Our generation mostly relies on technology for spell check and grammar flaws. We are not being challenged to do or learn how to do
this on our own. Its very rare for someone to write a letter by hand because technology has made it easier for us to not have to worry about these skills. Some children also rely on digital clocks and can
not read time. These skills are being forgotten because of technology.
Lack of Writing Skills
Technology will continue to evolve, making our everyday tasks easier.
It is up to us as a society to adapt, but at the same time not losing our human existence. It is important to keep up with the constant changes in our growing ‘tech’ world, but equally
important in keeping a strong foundation of the basic principles of our Literacy Skills.
ConclusionsTo survive in this industry, we must have the patience and
understanding to maintain a healthy balance of a true tech-savvy professional, with the same respect to the knowledge and
skills we’ve inherited.
