SAINT JOSEPH PARISH WAKEFIELD MA
PASTOR’S LETTER Dear Parishioners, This weekend and next weekend, our second graders will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This occasion is an excellent time to reflect on the great mercy of the Lord. Whenever we repent and confess our sins, the Lord washes our souls clean, making them as white as snow. He not only forgives but also forgets our sins. We need to do the same to ourselves. Let us forgive and not punish ourselves. The Lord has already taken our punishment by His dying on the cross for our sins. The following is a reflection on repentance.
The Believer’s Repentance
Do you know the difference between confession of sin and repentance? We should be careful not to confuse the two—because it’s possible to confess without moving into genuine repentance. To confess sin is to agree with God’s assessment of our transgression, but repentance goes further. It involves taking responsibility for our sin by deliberately turning from it and committing to walk in obedience to God by the power of His Spirit. It’s not enough to merely feel sorry and confess sin but change nothing. Jesus’ gracious forgiveness isn’t like a “get out of jail free” card from a certain board game. We must do more than casually say, “Lord, I’ve messed up again. I’m sorry.” To triumph over habitual sin, we must rely on God’s power, both to resist temptation and to obey Him. We might fail again, but it’s important that we keep coming to the Lord in sincere confession and repentance until He gives us victory—in this life or in the one to come. If you are struggling with a particular sin, ask the Lord to show you how grievous it is to Him. Then look at it from His perspective. I pray this results in a true spirit of repentance, and that your admission leads you to a more intimate relationship with the Father.

You may be curious about the status of the construction project on the bell tower. The demolition of the unsafe portion of the tower is complete, and the structure is secure. The electronic bells are temporarily silent until a new roof is in place. The roof will consist of a seamed aluminum cupola topped by a six-foot cross illuminated by spotlights. All the pieces will be built off-site then delivered and installed. We hope to have the project completed within two months. I will be available for confession this week on Monday, January 25, from 1:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the Church and on Saturday, January 30, from 3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. or any other time by appointment. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.
God love you,

Would you like to sign up for Adoration?
St Joseph Parish has a new Adoration Scheduling Software that makes it easy. Our software allows you to: see what Adoration hours need coverage; ask for substitutions; offer to be a substitute; and schedule reminders for your commitment. You can sign up easily online at https://stjoseph.weadorehim.com/ or through our website. You can also fill out an Adoration signup form, found in the foyer, and drop it in the rectory mail slot. Our Lord asked, “Could you not stay with me for even an hour?” Is He speaking to you?”
St. Joseph Parish supports the Wakefield Food Pantry. Drop off baskets are located in the foyer by the library for
your donations of non-perishable food items to benefit the needy. This month the pantry is especially in need of:
Cereal (boxed) Chili/Beef Stew (canned) Pasta (boxed) Pasta Meals (canned) Pasta Roni (boxed) Hearty Soups (i.e. Progresso) Spaghetti Sauce (jarred) White Tuna (canned)
Please no bulk sized items or perishables. Monetary donations are also welcome and can be dropped off at the rectory to the attention of Maureen Miller.
Thank you for your generosity.
Laughter, THE BEST MEDICINE Two surgeons and a dermatologist were having lunch in the hospital cafeteria when the first two doctors began to laugh hysterically. “What’s so funny?” the dermatologist asked, confused. “Sorry, you wouldn’t understand,” one of the surgeons said. “It’s an inside joke.”

A Note from the Administrative Assistant
As our church renovation comes to a close, some people have approached me about enhancing the altar. I inquired and obtained a design that includes an image of the last supper, hand-carved in Italy. This design would include a newly built altar. The total cost is $15,000. I already have some contributors.
If you are interested in donating to this project, please contact me at the rectory.

Could you benefit from Franciscan
Spiritual Direction?
Franciscan Spiritual Direction invites all disciples to navigate a uniquely sacred path, guided by the Holy Spirit. We discern “what am I feeling; what am I learning; where is God? Am I growing; will He transform me to His purpose?” The invitation seeks to share the challenges, as well as the joys, of living. There is much to learn from an innocent man who died on a cross, yet never stops loving us. What is happening in your heart and mind? What do you want God to hear, and what is He asking of you? Kate Chandler has a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry and is certified in Franciscan Spiritual Direction. During this time, Kate is also available remotely to listen and offer insight into various ways to pray for restoration of joy and peace in our everyday lives.
Kate can be reached at [email protected] or

Saint Joseph Parish Inner Healing Ministry
The Saint Joseph Parish Inner Healing Ministry recognizes this is a challenging and uncertain time we are living in. With many restrictions in place face to face prayer sessions are no longer an option. However through the Grace of God we have technology on our side. We will be offering virtual Inner Healing prayer sessions through Zoom video conferencing with our trained prayer ministers. Inner Healing can bring relief to our deepest fears, hurts, emotional pain, traumatic memories, tormenting thoughts, and relationship issues. If you are interested in making an appointment please email Lisa Palmere at [email protected].
Please watch this space for upcoming dates & information about the following parish programs:

Preach or Plow?
According to the family legend, two brothers, one named Billy and the other Melvin, were standing on the family’s dairy farm one day when they saw an airplane doing some skywriting. The boys watched as the plane sketched out the letters “GP” overhead. Both brothers decided that what they saw had meaning for them. One thought it meant “Go preach.” The other read it as “Go plow.” Later, one of the boys, Billy Graham, dedicated himself to preaching the gospel, becoming an icon of evangelism. His brother Melvin went on to faithfully run the family dairy farm for many years. Skywriting signs aside, if God did call Billy to preach and Melvin to plow, as seems to be the case, they both honored God through their vocations. While Billy had a long preaching career, his success doesn’t mean that his brother’s obedience to his calling to plow was any less important. While God does assign some to be in what we call full-time ministry (Ephesians 4:11–12), that doesn’t mean those in other jobs and roles aren’t doing something just as important. In either case, as Paul said, “each part [should do] its work” (v. 16). That means honoring Jesus by faithfully using the gifts He’s given us. When we do, whether we “go preach” or “go plow,” we can make a difference for Jesus wherever we serve or work.

The students at Saint Joseph School believe that Martin Luther King Jr and his eternal message of love, peace and equality is something to strive towards everyday. In celebration of this extraordinary man, the students in Mrs. DiBenedetto's kindergarten class safely created an art piece to cheer up the hallways of SJS. Despite being unable to physically join hands in memory of this holiday like normal, kindergarten was still able to join construction paper hands!
Saint Joseph School, Wakefield, would like to thank all of the school families that generously donated food items at the Christmas Stroll
this past year. The school, with the help of the Guild family (Pictured: Ella, Christian and James), was able to deliver 12 shopping bags
with over 100 food items to the Wakefield Food Pantry! Stay tuned for another opportunity to participate in an SJS Food Drive this year!
