Hot Rolled and Cold Formed Sheet Pile
Hot rolled and cold formed are two primary methods of manufacturing sheet pile. While there are key dierences between
these two methods, the most important disncon is the interlock. Since hot rolled sheet piles are produced from steel at
high temperatures, the interlock tends to be ghter than its cold formed counterpart. Normally, looser interlocks are not
recommended in extremely hard driving condions or for walls requiring low permeability. Hot rolled sheet piles are generally
larger and have a broader range of strengths than cold form sheet piles, but there is a large overlap between the two,
especially in the most common sizes.
Applicaons of Sheet Pile
Around the world, sheet piles are ulized for various applicaons. Z-pile, named aer its shape, is commonly used for
coerdams, levee strengthening, retaining structures, breakwaters, and bulkheads. In addion to these tradional
applicaons, steel sheet piles are also used for bridge abutments, environmental barrier walls, underground parking
garages, and depressed roads and railways. Sheet piles can also serve as permanent structural members in all of the
applicaons listed above.
Sheet pile designs are based on the bending properes, secon modulus, and moment of inera. Durability and drivability
of each secon is also taken into consideraon.
Flat sheet piles (straight web sheets) are used in the construcon of cellular structures. Cellular coerdams are ulized
to dewater large areas during the construcon of locks and dams and are also employed as permanent walls when loads
are exceponally high or there is lile or no soil for embedment. Since the cells are gravity structures, large embedment
is generally not necessary. The tension is resisted by the interlock. Unlike Z-pile or combinaon walls, interlock strength is
the main design consideraon for cellular coerdams. The weight of the cell and the resistance of the at sheet interlocks
provide the stability of the structure.

Combined Wall Systems
Combined wall systems are used when regular sheet piles are not strong enough to carry the required loads. The twomain components of a combined wall system are the king pile (HZ-M or Pipe) and a pair of intermediary sheet piles. The
connector is the third component and is welded to or interlocked with the king pile and connects the king pile to the sheet
pile. The intermediary sheet piles transfer the soil and water pressures to the king piles, which carry most of the load. The
sheet piles are usually shorter, varying from 60% to 100% of the length of the king pile. The king piles are oen designed to
carry substanal vercal loads in addion to the normal bending loads.
There are a wide variety of HZ-M and Pipe soluons which give the designer a great deal of exibility. Each type of
system, beam and pipe, has their own advantages. The HZ-M system is fully interlocking and does not rely on any welded
connecons. The HZ-M system also has a shallower depth than the pipe system which reduces the encroachment into
waterways. The Pipe-Z system has a much greater range of strengths than the HZ-M system because of the very large pipes
that can be manufactured for the system. It also usually has higher strength to weight and sness to weight raos than the
HZ-M system. Whichever system is chosen, the engineer can rest assured that both systems have proven themselves on
large infrastructure projects around the world.
Applicaons of Combined Wall Systems
Combined wall systems provide an ideal soluon for applicaons such as: large capacity retaining walls with deep
excavaons, breakwaters, deep coerdams, and other structures that require retaining walls to resist large loads.
