MEMORANDUM Preliminary Memorandum Report Sheetpile Retaining Wall Analysis and Design USF Polytechnic Building 555 Causeway Section Lakeland, Polk County, Florida KCI Project No. 61110267 30 November 2011 Page 2 of 4 2.0 GEOTECHNICAL EVALUATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Design Assumptions: We have performed sheet pile analysis and design based on the following assumptions:

The exposed height of the sheet pile should be a maximum 7 feet cantilever The top of the sheet pile is at EL 150 feet Model for Differential Hydrostatic Conditions as follows:

- Model A – Natural water level at the top of the sheet pile - Model B – Natural water level at the dredge line with full hydrostatic pressure behind the exposed height of the sheet pile - Model C – Natural water level at 2.5 feet below top of the sheet pile

Surcharge loading shall not exceed 250 pounds per square foot (psf) Minimum steel grade shall be ASTM A328 with yield strength of 39 kips per square inch

(ksi) Design Recommendations: Based on our analysis, we have provided the following recommendations for the sheet pile retaining wall design:

We recommend a minimum factor of safety (FS) of 1.3 for embedment We recommend a total minimum sheet pile length of 30 ft with a minimum of 23 ft of the

sheet pile below the dredge line The minimum section modulus of the sheet pile required per unit length of the wall shall

be 13 cubic inches per linear foot of the wall (in3/ft.). However, for corrosion considerations we recommend the following sheet pile sections: - AZ12 with section modulus of 22.3 in3/ft., or - PZ22 with section modulus of 18.1 in3/ft., or - PZ27 with section modulus of 30.2 in3/ft., or - AZ17 with section modulus of 31.0 in3/ft

KCI recommends the use of PZ27 or higher steel sheet piles for a highly corrosive project environment for this causeway. Steel sheet pile should conform to ASTM A572 Grade 50.

We recommend sealing the steel sheets joints to provide water tight seal and prevent fines from migrating through the sheet pile joints

MEMORANDUM Preliminary Memorandum Report Sheetpile Retaining Wall Analysis and Design USF Polytechnic Building 555 Causeway Section Lakeland, Polk County, Florida KCI Project No. 61110267 30 November 2011 Page 3 of 4 3.0 GEOTECHNICAL LIMITATIONS General 1. This report has been prepared to aid in the design of the proposed construction described in this report. Adequate recommendations have been provided to serve as a basis for design and preparation of plans and specifications. The opinions, conclusions, and recommendations contained in this report are based upon our professional judgment and generally accepted principles of geotechnical engineering. Inherent to these are the assumptions that the earthwork construction should be monitored and tested under the guidance of a geotechnical engineer licensed in the State of Florida or his representative. Review 2. This report has been prepared based on plans and description of the proposed construction cited herein. In the event that any changes in the nature, design or location of the proposed sheet pile retaining wall are planned, the conclusions and recommendations contained in this report should not be considered valid unless the changes are reviewed and conclusions of this report modified or verified in writing by KCI. This preliminary report is valid for a dredge depth of 7 ft below the final design grade of the causeway. If for any reason this dredge depth increases more than 7 ft, then this sheet pile wall design will not be valid. In this regard, the dredge depth should be maintained for the service life of this structure. Uses of Report 3. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of USF Polytechnic and other members of the design team for specific application to the proposed Cantilever Sheet Pile Retaining Wall, located at the proposed Building 555 Causeway, USF Polytechnic Campus, Lakeland, Polk County, Florida. Our professional services have been performed in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and practices; no other warranty, expressed or implied, is made. KCI assumes no responsibility for interpretations made by others on the work performed by KCI. 4. This report is for design purposes only and is not sufficient to prepare an accurate bid. Contractors wishing a copy of the report may secure it with the understanding that its scope is

We recommend that this report be made available in its entirety including attachments and appendices to Contractors for informational purposes only. The project plans or specifications should include the following note: A geotechnical memorandum report has been prepared for this project by KCI Technologies, Inc. This report is for informational purposes only and should not be considered as part of the contract documents.
