With over 30 years of experience in the commercialroofing industry, Merit Roofing Systems of Richardson,Texas, has worked on a multitude of re-roofingprojects that collectively have involved a wideassortment of roof decks and substrates. But perhapsthere has never been such a variety of re-roofchallenges as what Merit dealt with during a projectwith the Aubrey, Texas, Independent School District. This 118,000 square-foot re-roof project, thelargest in Aubrey ISD’s history, involved areas overthe office, computer room, band hall, and gym-nasium of Aubrey High School, and virtually theentire roof of Brockett Elementary. New roofingsystems were installed over several different existingroof types, from modified bitumen to standingseam metal. The age of the existing roof systems, ongoingleaks, and the potential for energy savings were theprimary factors that prompted the ISD to investigateroof replacement. The Interlocal Purchasing System, also known asTIPS/TAPS, is a purchasing cooperative that servesschool districts, colleges and universities, andfederal, state, and local municipalities. MeritRoofing’s involvement with TIPS/TAPS, as well asthe company’s strong roofing history with manyIndependent School Districts in Texas, helpedsecure Merit’s position as the contractor of choicefor the Aubrey ISD project. Given the different types of roofs on the Aubreybuildings, several re-roof options were considered, including using both single-ply membrane andstanding seam metal. However, Merit and Aubreyrepresentatives eventually decided that Duro-Last

single-ply membranes would be the best choice forall roof surfaces. “The standing seam metal roof on BrockettElementary was particularly unattractive,” said H.L.Brockett, Building Superintendent for the district.“It had little or no insulation value. With the extremeheat that we have here in Texas, the Duro-Lastsolution we came up with was a perfect fit, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality.”

One key factor that went into the selection ofDuro-Last was a September 2010 visit by ISDrepresentatives to Saginaw, Michigan, for a tour ofDuro-Last’s headquarters and production operation. They learned about how custom-fabrication ofroofing systems sets Duro-Last apart from othermanufacturers. “We were very impressed with the cleanliness ofthe manufacturing operation and attention toquality,” said Aubrey ISD Superintendent JamesMonaco. The fact that Duro-Last customizes everyroofing system to fit building specifications gives us an added measure of assurance that the roofs on our buildings will perform effectively well intothe future.”Every Duro-Last roof system is delivered to the jobsite with up to 85% of membrane seaming completedin the factory. Also, custom fabricated stacks andcurb flashings eliminate most rooftop labor fromcritical roof areas – transitions and changes of plane.

The roofing system for the Aubrey project was manu-factured in Duro-Last’s Jackson, Mississippi, facility. “A good portion of the project allowed us to use Duro-Last’s prefabricated membrane,” said Merit ProjectManager Brian Kimbrell. “This saved us installationtime on the roof and provided minimal disruption tobuilding activities during the time we were on-site.”

Project Details• The high school gymnasium has a barrel-shapedroof that’s almost 14,000 square feet in size. Meritused 50-mil fully-adhered Duro-Fleece™ membraneon this section.

• The remainder of the high school project re-coveredapproximately 39,000 square feet of modifiedbitumen. Merit mechanically attached the 40-milDuro-Last roofing system.

• On Brockett Elementary, 13,000 square feet werere-covered using the mechanically-attached 40-milDuro-Last roofing system.

• The rest of the Brockett project – more than 51,000square feet – was 50-mil Duro-Fleece membraneinstalled over standing seam metal, with appropriateflute filler and DensDeck® re-cover board attachedto the metal deck.

• The Brockett installation also included metal guttersand downspouts, prefabricated by EXCEPTIONAL®

Metals, a division of Duro-Last.

All of the Duro-Last membrane used in the projectwas white and highly reflective. After the project wascompleted, Monaco said, “The reflective membrane isreally making a difference. We are starting to see energysavings in these facilities and are optimistic that thesesavings will be substantial.”Merit Roofing Systems has been an authorized Duro-Last contractor since 1997. As an Elite Contractor, Meritis recognized consistently by Duro-Last for qualityworkmanship and sales excellence. “The Aubrey project proved that the combination ofMerit Roofing Systems and Duro-Last can address anyre-cover challenge that may arise,” said Merit’s Kimbrell.“We have relationships with many ISDs throughout NorthTexas, and our work on the Aubrey installation willposition us well for consideration on upcoming projects.”
