Essential LearningStudents will examine the basic structure of atomsand will learn to distinguish between things thatare comprised of atoms and those that are not.
Essential Question(s)What is the basic structure of atoms, and how canwe distinguish between things made of atoms and things that are not?

Tennessee SPI Objective:Recognize that all matter consists of atoms.
Science
All matter is made up of atoms Matter is anything that has mass & takes up space (volume) Matter is anything that is solid, liquid, gas, or plasma
Bowling Ball(solid)
Orange Juice(liquid)
The Sun(plasma)Oxygen
(gas)
These objects are made of matter. Therefore they are made of atoms.

Science
Rock Insect Flower
What do these 3 items have in common? They all have mass and take up space (volume)They are either solid, liquid, or gasSo they are all made of matter which is made of atoms
Things that are not made of matterAsk yourself if it is a solid, liquid, or gas
Example: Force is not made of atoms
Example: Energy is not made of atoms
Time is not a solid: You can not touch it Time is not a liquid: You can not drink it. Time is not a gas: You can not smell it.

Notice the sub-atomic particles in this beryllium atom It has 4 (blue) protons (So the atomic number is four) It also has 5 (green) neutrons and 4 (orange) electrons

Notes
We once thought atoms were the smallest particles. We now know there are even smaller particles They are called sub-atomic particles

Atoms are made of three sub-atomic particles…
…3 protons (the blue circles) (atomic number is 3)
…4 neutrons (the green circles)
…3 electrons (the orange circles)

Protons: positive charge, found in the nucleus of atomsNote: In atoms the number of protons & electrons are the sameNeutrons: no charge, also found in the nucleus of atoms

Electrons are located in the electron cloud in areas called electron shells
This atom has 2 electron shells.

(see cloud in green area below) These can also be
called electron energy levels or electron orbitals.
