Dear Parent/Carer
Welcome to our Summer Newsletter.
It has been another fantastic year at Hollingworth. We started in September
with the news that our outgoing Year 11s had achieved stunning results in their
GCSEs, and the year has been packed with amazing pupil experiences and
achievements, many of which are described in this newsletter.
We look forward to welcoming your child back to school on Wednesday 4th
September. This year when we re-open, we will have a later start of 11am for
Years 8, 9, 10 and 11, whereas Year 7 will be in from 8.30am for a normal start.
In the meantime, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your
family a restful and enjoyable summer.

Summer 2019
Another outstanding year for the Hollingworth rowing teams. On Thursday 7th March 2019, there
were some very tough races, with all our pupils having to dig deep and put themselves through
physical stress. The support and encouragement the pupils gave each other in the races was
simply amazing. We won five team golds and two team silvers.

Thanks to all the rowers for your hard work and commitment over months of training.
The pupils competed over a series of tournament nights with the points accumulated over each event. It was
an exceptionally successful season. The hard work in training was certainly rewarded with the pupils in all the
age categories picking up silverware. The Year 7 girls were so keen that we entered two teams into the
competition.
The girls’ teams had worked hard in lessons and during extra-curricular practices to learn individual techniques
and develop their positional play. They showed real flare and creativity when attacking and were solid in the
tackle when defending. Both teams remain undefeated.

Congratulations to all the girls that participated in the Rochdale Rounders’ tournaments. The standard of
play was exceptionally high this year, which meant a high level of batting and fielding skills were needed.
The girls’ tactical knowledge and application of the rules was evident in outwitting their opponents to secure
three victories and a runners-up position.
Our Year 11 football team made their coach, Mr
Williamson, a very proud man with a brilliant finish
to a superb season. They went unbeaten
throughout the season and in doing so, became
double winners: League Champions and Cup
Winners. The highlight was the Cup Final at
Hopwood Hall when we took on St. Cuthbert. The
game was very tight but Hollingworth took the lead
through a Solomon Robinson penalty in the first half.
St. Cuthbert piled on the pressure in their search for
an equaliser but strong defending from Captain J
Frater, J Toshkezi, J Carr, E Dunbavin kept chances
to a minimum, and keeper H Farthing pulled off two
spectacular saves, one tip over the bar from close range made everyone gasp. With the pressure on,
Robinson broke away, went around the keeper and slotted into an empty net. Hollingworth finished up 2-0
winners; a fantastic result. To celebrate, the lads went go karting with almost all the lads left in Mr Williamson’s
dust! A great way to end five years of real progress from a talented group of footballers.

On Thursday 7th February 2019, our top Maths pupils in Year 9 and 10
took part in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. Several of our
pupils achieved bronze, silver or gold certificates of achievement,
which is a great credit to their hard work. A Wilcock-Thomas (Year 9)
performed exceptionally well and was invited to compete in the
second round of the competition, the Grey Kangaroo. He scored a
massive 94/135, which was a fantastic personal achievement and
very well deserved.
On Tuesday 5th March 2019, four gifted Hollingworth
Mathematicians took part in the Year 10 Maths Feast at the
University of Manchester. N Miah, H Hopkins, G Park and U Hussain
Shah worked hard competing in each of the four different rounds,
solving a multitude of challenging problems. Whilst they weren’t
the overall winners of the competition, they did each receive a
special certificate of participation for consistently doing well in every
round.
On Monday 11th March 2019, four of our
talented KS3 Mathematicians took part in the
UKMT team challenge at Manchester
Grammar School. O Walton Lumb, A Wilcock
Thomas, A Manzoor and J Alao put in a great
team effort combining mathematical,
communication and teamwork skills. This
competition provides pupils with the
opportunity to tackle a variety of engaging
mathematical activities while developing
teamwork. The UKMT Team Challenges
promote mathematical dexterity and give
pupils the opportunity to compete against
pupils from other schools in their region.
On Thursday 26th April 2019, our top pupils in Year 7 and 8 took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge.
Several of our pupils achieved bronze and silver certificates of achievement. Unfortunately, no one qualified
for the next round this time, but there is always next year! Check out the wall displays in the Maths corridor to
see all the certificate winners. Well done to all our enthusiastic mathematicians.
Pupils in Year 9 and 10 have successfully graduated from The Brilliant Club. Pupils in Year 10 worked with Dr
Laura Swift from The University of Manchester and studied “Psychoanalysis in Literature”. Year 9 pupils worked
with PhD candidate Anne Stokes, also from The University of Manchester, where they studied “Art, Portraiture
and Power”. They received incredible results including numerous 1:1 grades. The courses were quite difficult
but all our pupils rose to the challenge and did themselves proud.

Umme, Sidra and Maia have won awards at the George Orwell Political
Writing Competition! Sidra received the Runner Up award and Umme
and Maia received the Highly Commended award. It’s worth noting
that Maia (Year 7) was the youngest award winner! The ceremony was
held at Pembroke College, Oxford. Rick Edwards (former presenter of
E4 Music) was on hand to present the awards and to interview the
pupils. This is an incredible feat, as there were 269 entries overall and
the three girls managed to beat some amazing rivalry from schools
across London and Sheffield. All three pupils took part in a writing
workshop with award winning journalists and authors such as Max
Daley, Sarah K Perry, Delia Jarrett MacAuley and Irenosen Okojie.
They also took part in a debate entitled “Our education equips us for
the future we want”.
Caitlin Moran was the judge for
this year’s competition. Caitlin has won the British
Press Awards’ Columnist of the Year, Interviewer of
the Year, and Critic of the Year. Her bestselling
memoire ‘How to be a Woman’ won the National
Book Awards Book of the Year, was an instant New
York Times bestseller, and is published in 25
languages. The film of her novel ‘How to Build a
Girl’, produced by Channel 4 and Monumental
Pictures, will be released later this year.
In March, Hollingworth celebrated World Book Day with a Books & Bakes Sale. Staff kindly donated many
cakes, bakes and second-hand books to sell in the LRC, and the money raised by the pupils went towards
new books for the library. Elsewhere in the school, Year 9s took part in ‘Relaunch Sessions’ to show them what
the library has to offer, and Year 7s and 8s showed off their book knowledge with quizzes and debates! Well
done to all those who took part.
June was a very busy month in the LRC. Our Book Club were lucky enough to go on a trip to Waterstones
Deansgate in Manchester, to choose new books for the library. Thanks go to the Siobhan Dowd Trust who
donated £500! Pupils received a tour of the bookshop, an insight into how bookselling works, and picked over
80 new books for the school. Of course, we found time to stop for cake too! Thanks to Clare at Waterstones
for giving us a tour of such an amazing bookshop.
Later that week, Year 7s welcomed Joseph Delaney, bestselling author of the Spook’s Apprentice series, to
the school. Joseph told us about what inspired him to be an author, introduced us to his books, and scared
us all with stories about local ghosts! We are sure the audience left with a few budding authors. Huge thanks
go to Joseph and his team for a brilliant talk.
Our annual Battlefields visit was another resounding
success. In March, 44 Year 9 pupils journeyed to Ypres
in Belgium and Arras in Northern France to see the First
World War Battlefields. We again took part in the Last
Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres and visited
sites around this beautiful city such as Tyne Cot
Cemetery and Hill 60. On the second day, we visited
the Canadian Memorial site at Vimy Ridge and its
memorial park - quite simply a beautiful, inspirational
place. We again laid our wreath at the Cabaret-
Rouge British cemetery, resting place of Milnrow soldier
Private J Crabtree. All the pupils searched for soldiers
with the same surname as theirs at the Ring of
Remembrance at Notre-Dame de Lorette. The sight of
seeing our pupils spread around this huge memorial
was one never to forget. This year we visited
Wellington Quarry for the first time. This is an
underground site, in the chalkstone around Arras,
where British soldiers sheltered before their attack in
April 1917. To walk in the footsteps of the British
‘tommies’, 50 metres under the ground, was an
incredible experience. Our pupils brought powerful
memories and tons of chocolate back home with
them. Roll on 2020!
On Wednesday 26th
June 2019, 20 of our most talented Year 10
Historians went to The University of Manchester
for a History enrichment day. The day focused
on the role of Jodrell Bank, a huge telescope in
the heart of Cheshire, and its role in the Cold War.
Jodrell Bank monitored both American and
Soviet space and missile activity and became a
crucial verifier of what both superpowers were
doing. The founder of Jodrell Bank, Sir Bernard
Lovell, who the telescope is now named after,
had to play a clever role in acquiring funding for
the project while trying to stay neutral in the Cold
War’s bitter rivalries. Our pupils took part in three
academic lectures; one from a Physicist based at
Jodrell Bank, one from a doctor of American
history and one from a doctor of Soviet history.
We then took part in a workshop where we
investigated the role of Lovell and how he
worked with both sides. The day was superb, and
increased our pupils’ awareness of university and
what studying there could be like.
In February 2019, the Year 9 got the chance to take part in the Amazing Science
Enrichment Day, which included:
1. SCI HIGH:
Solving a classroom crime scene using some traditional CSI techniques
including fingerprinting, chromatography, footprint, flame test and blood
splatter analysis.
2. MEDICAL MAVERICKS:
Getting hands on with some of the latest medical equipment used in diagnosis
and treatment.
3. CAREERS:
A Science Careers Workshop with real scientists, informing pupils of where
knowledge and skills in science are applied in the real world.
4. THE FLASH BANG SHOW:
High flying, eye popping, ear whistling, explosive, chemical reaction
interactive workshop.
On Wednesday 26th June 2019, we took four Year 7 pupils to Oulder Hill for the Rochdale MFL Network Spelling
Bee Final. Ayesha and Mevish came first and second place respectively, and Maia and Aliza came third and
fourth place. A big congratulations to all of them, they did amazingly. In addition to the Final, pupils took
part in a game of pétanque, a Spanish taster lesson and a World Cup dance class to celebrate the Women’s
World Cup being held in France.
Year 7 pupils created these lovely fish in the style of Mark Hearld
Year 9 pupils produced work to
commemorate the centennial
of the First World War.
We would like to thank all
who attended, making the
evening a great success.
We like to acknowledge the hard work of our pupils and
over the last couple of years, we have adorned the
Community Tree with their work. These displays are from
this academic year.
William (Year 10) has received the Mayor of Rochdale’s Youth
Award for his work with the soup kitchen that he helps to run. This
soup kitchen helps the homeless once a week and the young
people who run it have gained recognition for helping out and
treating others with respect and dignity. Will went out and
volunteered for this off his own back; he is a brilliant example of
one of our young people taking responsibility and showing great
respect for others.
The pupils raised a terrific £154 for new books for our library.
To raise money for Mind, the mental health charity, we held
our annual staff charity football match, wearing our rainbow
laces, after school on Friday 12th July 2019, which marked
the end of Diversity Week. In addition, we had a non-
uniform day that day, raising a staggering amount!
Week commencing 18th March was World Down's Syndrome
Awareness and we raised funds for a local charity called DS
West Pennine by inviting staff and pupils to wear mismatching,
brightly coloured socks on Friday 22nd March for a 50p donation.
The Hollingworth Runners took part in a 10k run on Sunday 19th May (a big well done
to Mr Barton (English teacher) who was brave enough to complete the half
marathon on the morning!) and again on 8th September. The Hollingworth Runners
were all amazing. We have raised £520 for our amazing charities. Thanks for your
kind donations and BIG WELL DONE to all the runners!
Parents/carers can find a full list of the extra-curricular sessions we run on our website:
http://www.hollingworthacademy.co.uk by following the links: Pupils/After School Clubs. This is updated
each term and the Autumn Term lists will be available to view in September.
The school Reception team strives to offer parents/carers, visitors and pupils an experienced and friendly
service. As part of this service, we are aware that there are times when parents/carers need to visit school
to see a member of staff. Where possible, please can parents/carers contact the school in advance to book
an appointment? We understand that this is not always possible and on these occasions, we will try to
organise a meeting with the member of staff as soon as they are available, but for unplanned visits, there
may be a wait.
There are times when parents/carers need to drop items off for their child. The Reception team will always
endeavour to notify pupils and pass these items on, but please can this be kept to a minimum. It is ultimately
the pupil’s responsibility to remember their equipment for school and at busy times, we cannot guarantee
that items dropped off will be passed to pupils in time for the required lessons.
We recommend that parents/carers get their children into the routine of checking their timetable each
evening and packing their bag in readiness for their lessons the following day. This helps pupils become
more organised and hopefully leads to a less stressful school run, or the parent/carer having to take time off
work to bring forgotten items in! Here is a list of the basic equipment that pupils must remember each day
(which is in the pupils’ planners)…
Pen/Pencil/Eraser/Ruler PE Kit Apron for CDT Calculator
Earphones for ICT Exercise Books/Planner/Homework
As parents/carers are aware, a barrier is in place to restrict access to the school car park and to reduce
speeding on the school grounds. Due to the limited spaces, the school car park is for staff and visitors only.
We would ask that parents/carers who are collecting or dropping pupils off between 9am and 1.30pm use
the parent parking at the front of school. At the beginning and end of the school day, parents/carers must
park outside the school grounds. We do understand that there may be occasions when you are collecting
a sick child and closer access to school is necessary. In these instances, parents/carers will be given access
to the car park.
We have a strong team of First Aiders based in Reception who deal with sick pupils and emergency first aid
in school. Please can parents/carers be aware that this team are not qualified to diagnose and any
information we pass on to parents/carers will be in line with the first aid training that has been received. In
addition to this, the school only has a limited amount of first aid resources and we cannot provide pupils with
daily plasters or dressings.
1. Could we politely ask you to make routine medical and dental appointments for your child during school
holidays or after school please? We understand that this is not always possible, but to minimise disruption
to lessons we need to reduce the number of medical and dental appointments currently taking place.
2. At least 24 hours’ notice should be given, in writing, to your child’s Head of Year to request time out for a
medical or dental appointment. This is to cover safeguarding requirements.
HAVE A GREAT SUMMER
