Numerous Sundown HighSchool seniors were honoredwith scholarships at the HighSchool Awards Assembly heldon Friday.

Janice Legan, counselor atSHS, was joined by Dr. KelvinSharp, president of South PlainsCollege, Mike Box, chairman ofthe SPC Board of Regents, AbelPerez, president of LevellandNoon Rotary Club, Kevin Elmore,Levelland Kiwanis Club, andBlake Moore, Lyntegar in Tahoka,in presenting scholarships tomany students.

Dr. Sharp and Box said it wastheir pleasure to be representingSouth Plains College inannouncing the scholarshiprecipients for the Class of 2013.

“You are all to becongratulated for your hard work,your dedication and yourleadership that is being recognizedthis morning,” said Dr. Sharp.

Dr. Sharp added that SPCwas pleased to be offeringscholarships to 38 SHSgraduating seniors, totaling$39,000.

“This year, we were able toprovide a scholarship for everySundown High student whoapplied for a scholarship,” saidDr. Sharp.

The SPC OpportunityScholarship award ($250)recipients were: Rebecca Bailey,Alexander Cancino, Carl Demel,Tyler Elliott, Chance Hinson,Bryan Jacquz, Adrian

Marinelarena, Aaron Martinez,Victoria Martinez, Bryce McHam,Zachary Murillo, EmmanuelRealyvasquez, Marissa Rodriguez,Caleb Vaught, Kaleb Vega, MaggyVillarreal, Wesley Wright, andNydia Young.

Other SPC scholarshipawards:

The Roland Martin Memorial

Scholarship for $500, went toRaylee Wilkes.

The South Plains CollegeFamily Scholarship for $500 waspresented to Harley Reyes.

Recipients of the VergieBelle Smallwood AchievementAward for $500 were LaurenMarek, Miranda Perez, RayleeWilkes, and Jessica Polson.

The John L. SmallwoodLeadership Award ($500) waspresented to Robby Escobar,Devin Kaleb Elmore, JohnnyHernandez, and Michael Serna.

Receiving the John L. andVergie Belle Smallwood Scholarsprogram presents studentsdesignated as SmallwoodScholars with $2,000 scholarships,

explained Dr. Sharp.Shelby Beardsley was chosen

by the faculty of the SPC artdepartment to receive the ChristineDeVitt Memorial Scholarship inArt in the amount of $500.

Collins Evan was alsoselected to receive the RoyceElam Memorial Scholarship in theamount of $1,000.

Other students receivingSmallwood Scholarships were:Caleb Fryar, Brenda Guardiola,Kyler Marshall, Morgan Sick,BreAnne Strickland, and DesireeTrinidad.

Dr. Sharp and Box alsopresented the Valedictorian($5,000) and Salutatorian ($3,500)Scholarships, for SPC tuition and

fees, to Spencer Rawls andDawson McClendon.

Receiving the Rube MorrisMemorial Welding Scholarshipfor the amount of $500 was RobbyEscobar.

Michael Serna wasadditionally selected to receivethe SPC Family Scholarship for$500.

Other scholarshippresentations included:

Abel Perez presented ChanceHinson a $500 scholarship fromthe Levelland Noon Rotary Club.

Blake Moore from Lyntegarin Tahoka presented twoscholarships to Victoria Garzaand Dawson McClendon, eachfor $2,500.

Kevin Elmore from theLevelland Kiwanis presented a$1,000 scholarship to DevinElmore.

Janice Legan presentedscholarships to the followingstudents:

Morgan Sick, Mirabeau B.Lamar scholarship, MasonicLodge in Levelland, $600.

Spencer Rawls, Texas Math& Science Coaches Association,$1,200.

Brenda Guardiola, SundownISD Association of TexasProfessional Educators, $500.

Devin Elmore, Jessica Polson,and Desiree Trinidad, the Ted andDelores Davis Family, $500 (each).

KaLee Dehnel and BrendaGuardiola, the Mary Lynn SherleyScholarship, $500(each).

Victoria Garza was awarded$500 by the Texas Association ofSchool Boards for her winningessay and panel presentationheld in Corpus Christi.

Victoria Martinez wasawarded a $1,000 scholarship byGeneration Texas. SPC matchesthis scholarship, so it totals$2,000.

Collin Evans, Spencer Rawls,and Wesley Wright earned $2,650scholarships in bowl competitionsheld by the Texas Association ofCommunity and SchoolsAcademic Challenge.

Dr. Sharp encouraged thestudents who had not applied forscholarships to do so, with manystill available, saying, “We areyour college and we are there tohelp you in whatever yourchoices are and will do everythingto help further your goals.”
