Whole School Carols Night: Wednesday, 18th
December
Our school Carols Night will be held on Wednesday, 18th
December in our school grounds. The night will commence
with families bringing their own basket tea at 6.00pm, the
school band will commence playing at 6:15pm, followed at
6.30pm by class performances. It is expected that the night
will conclude before 8.00pm.
As all children at the school will be involved in this night
we ask that parents keep this date free and we look
forward to your attendance.
The format of the Carols Night is as follows:
The event is alcohol-free. As the evening involves
children, we ask that parents, friends and relatives do not
bring alcohol.
The playground area is out of bounds during the
performances. We ask that parents supervise their
children (of all ages) to ensure they are not on the
playground during performance times.
School buildings and grounds are smoke-free. This is a
state law.
School children are to be seated in their class groups in
front of the stage area so they are ready to go on for their
performance. They should not be sitting with their
family.
Adults should display good audience behaviours by
facing towards the performers and limit their talk whilst
performances are taking place.
Thank You Thank you to our local White Hills Amcal Pharmacy, who
has recently donated $150.00 to our school. We are very
appreciative of their generosity. Please support the local
businesses that support our school.
Canteen/Uniform Shop Closed The Canteen and Uniform Shop will be closed on Friday 20
th
December, last day of Term.
Vision and Values At White Hills Primary School we are committed to providing students with tools for lifelong learning. We foster a climate which enables students to be adaptable learners and contribute productively in our constantly changing society.
Helping Children Cope With Stress Our first instinct might be to shield our children from stressful situations, but not teaching resilience can
be detrimental to their wellbeing. Instead of telling your children what to do, show them what they can
do. Many children aren’t taught to problem solve because we tend to fix things for them. But if they can
look at a problem and generate a few options about what they can try, then they’ll feel more in control.
Show your children how to break a problem into manageable parts, then encourage them to have a go -
it doesn’t have to be the perfect solution- and see what works for them.
Grades 2014: Notification Next Thursday 2014 grade allocation letters for all students will be sent home next Thursday, 12
th December. Included with the letter will be a map
of the school outlining the location of teachers and grades for the beginning of the 2014 school year.
Due to the complexity in establishing grades, students cannot be moved.
Opportunity for written parental input closed several weeks ago. The process of allocating children to grades is very complex, with
teachers and coordinators spending many days developing class groups based on sound educational factors.
Class teachers have worked with children to nominate five (5) of their friends and we have placed them with at least one (1) of their
nominated friends.
We consider the following factors when determining grades: even distribution of academic ability within grades, separation of
children who do not work well together, gender balance, interpersonal development, friendship groups, attitude, maturity, individual
needs and behaviour.
Step Up Sessions ‘Step Up’ transition sessions for our students in their 2014 grade groupings will take place in the final week of term.
These Step Up sessions will occur on:
Thursday, 19th
December from 11:30am-1:30pm
Friday, 20th
December from 9.00am-11.30am
Students will be involved in activities in their 2014 grade in their new classroom, and (if possible) with their 2014 teacher. Students
who are new to White Hills in 2014 have also been invited to attend the Step Up sessions. We have received very positive feedback
from parents about how these sessions prepare their child / children for transition into their new grade.
Student Reports: Distribution Date
End of year student reports and Learning Portfolios will be distributed on Wednesday, 18th
December.
Grade 6 Graduation Evening The Grade 6 Graduation Evening will be held at the Bendigo Baptist Church, 757 McIvor Hwy, Junortoun on Thursday, 19
th
December, commencing at 5:30pm for the Grade 6 students.
Parents are to arrive at the Baptist Church auditorium at 7.00pm for the formal part of the evening. Grade 6 families were sent a
letter with all details three weeks ago. Official invitations are being prepared by students and will come home to families in the very
near future.
Orientation Day: Thank You
Thank you to the Uniform Shop parents and Parents Club members for their help on Orientation Day on Tuesday. Your support
helped make our new parents feel welcomed to the school.
Thank You Morning Tea Thank you to the large number of parents and volunteers who attended the special morning tea held by staff on Monday. It gave us
an opportunity to express our gratitude for the commitment and time that our volunteers have given to our many school programs
over the 2013 school year.
2014 Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) & Schoolkids Bonus Educational Maintenance Allowance:
Last year the Victorian State Government implemented significant changes to the EMA amount and how it was paid.
This meant parents at White Hills PS were not able to put their EMA payment towards the cost of the school Bookpack,
student photocopying and computer requisites charges (Part A). School Council has again determined that if parents elect to sign over or direct their EMA payment to the school, these funds will be
put towards the payment of Special Events, major excursions and camps.
Schoolkids Bonus:
The 'Schoolkids Bonus' was a payment introduced by the previous Commonwealth Government. It was paid by Centrelink in
January and July each year to help families with school costs. Please note that the current Commonwealth Government has
committed to abolishing the Schoolkids Bonus. Legislation to abolish the Schoolkids Bonus was introduced into Parliament on 13th
November 2013. If the legislation is passed before the end of this year, the Schoolkids Bonus will not be paid from January 2014.
In short, parents should not rely on the Schoolkids Bonus to cover educational costs at the beginning of the 2014 school year.
An information sheet regarding the EMA and Schoolkids Bonus has been included in the 2014 Book Pack information.
It’s very important that you read the information sheet as the changes outlined above will have a considerable impact upon your
budgeting for educational costs. You can also call the school office on 54430799 for further details.
Book Pack Collection Days 2014 Book Pack collection and payment days are Thursday, 23
rd and Friday, 24
th January 2014 from 9.30am – 1.00pm.
To avoid a rush at the beginning of each day we ask that families consider doing the following:
Families with surname A-H collect Book Packs between 9:30-11:30am
Families with surname I-Z collect Book Packs between 11:30am-1pm
Minimum costs to be paid when collecting book packs are outlined in Section A of the Book Pack information (ie. the Book Pack,
student photocopying and computer requisites charges). The Uniform Shop will be open for the payment and collection of orders.
Costing for 2014 Book Packs (Part A) are: Preps - $107.00, Grade 1 - $103.00, Grade 2 - $104.00, Grade 3 - $100.00, Grade 4 –
$79.00, Grade 5 – $193.00 and Grade 6 - $193.00 Payment is due on Book Pack collection days.
Please note that parents at White Hills PS will not be able to allocate their EMA payment towards the cost of the school Book
Pack, student photocopying and computer requisites charges (Part A). However, you will be able to allocate your EMA payment
towards prepayment of Special Events and any other expenses.
Traffic Safety at Front of School Parents should note the following:
It is illegal to perform a U-turn in front of the school, even down by the bridge.
Parents are not to enter the staff car park during drop off and pick up times due to the heavy pedestrian traffic.
Parents are urged to use the school crossing when crossing the road to collect their children. It is important that children have safe
traffic behaviour modeled to them.
The parking bays at the front of the school are for drop off and pick up only (2 minutes). They are not for longer-term parking.
Park on the school-side only in Sharyn St. Parking on both sides of the street blocks access and residents are unable to get out of
their driveway.
Please note that the Highway Patrol conduct regular patrols in an unmarked vehicle. They warn that fines will be issued for illegal
traffic behaviour. We appreciate your support in keeping our students and families safe.

Christmas Food Collection – Donations Last Day TOMORROW
Every year for the last few years we have conducted a collection of supplies for incorporation into Christmas Hampers, for those
who are less fortunate than ourselves within our school and wider local community.
This year we are collecting non-perishable Christmas foodstuffs, such as:
Shortbread, Christmas pudding, tinned ham, fruit mince pies, tinned veggies, Christmas lollies etc…
Last day to donate is TOMORROW Friday, 6th
December.
A Christmas tree has been placed in the hallway near the Grade 6 rooms for placement of these items. They will be collected by
Bendigo Baptist Community Care, for incorporation into Christmas Hampers, many of which will then be distributed to families
within our school community.
I look forward to your assistance and generosity in sharing the Christmas Spirit with others who might otherwise miss out.
