Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be.
confiteor
I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore, I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

liturGY of the Word
first readinG numbers 3:5-9
The Lord said to Moses: “Summon the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest, as his assistants. They shall discharge his obligations and those of the whole community before the meeting tent by serving at the Dwelling. They shall have custody of all the furnishings of the meeting tent and discharge the duties of the children of Israel in the service of the Dwelling. You shall give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they have been set aside from among the children of Israel as dedicated to me.”
R/. Thanks be to God.
resPonsorial Psalm Psalm 89

second readinG acts 6:1-7b As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filledwiththeSpiritandwisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, sotheychoseStephen, amanfilledwithfaith and the Holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the Apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, and the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly.
The word of the Lord.
R/. Thanks be to God.

GosPel acclamation
GosPel mattheW 20:25b-28 Jesus summoned his disciples and said to them: “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoeverwishestobefirstamongyou shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
R/. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Please remain standing until the Archbishop blesses the assembly with the Book of the Gospels.

election of the candidate
The candidate is called by name and takes his place before the Archbishop. After hearing testimony in his favor, the bishop chooses him for ordination
Archbishop: Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose this man, our brother, for the Order of the Diaconate.
All: Thanks be to God.
The assembly gives its assent by applause.

Promise of the elect
The Elect stands before the Archbishop, who questions him about the office of deacon. He asks if he has resolved to assume the responsibilites of the office, to make a commitment to celibacy, and to pray the Liturgy of the Hours.
Then the Elect kneels before the Archbishop, and placing his hands between the hands of the Archbishop, he promises obedience to the Archbishop of Portland and his successors.
Then all stand. The Archbishop faces the people and invites them to pray.
The elect prostrates himself and the Litany of Saints is sung while all kneel.
