THERE was a special event atHarlow Town train station onFriday to mark the completionof a major upgrade.

The station, which celebrated its 50thanniversary last month, has beentransformed through a partnershipbetween National Express East Anglia(NXEA), Harlow Renaissance and EssexCounty Council (ECC).

The £390,000 project has renewed thestation’s buildings and provided easieraccess for customers, whilst retainingthe unique features of the grade II listed

building. The station overbridge hasbeen opened up and refurbished andthere are two new waiting areas,timetable boards and a d isplay of stationmemorabilia charting its history.

New lifts have also been installed toprovide improved access for disabledcustomers and for those with pushchairsor heavy luggage.

 Andrew Bramidge, chief executive of Harlow Renaissance, said: “As a gateway

into Harlow, the station presents thefirst image many visitors will have of the town therefore its appearance is of the upmost importance to help deliver apositive and welcoming impression.”

Harlow MP Robert Halfon attendedthe ceremony to officially re-open thestation, whilst the Harlow Steel Bandprovided some fantastic entertainment.

To round off the transformation, NXEAhas completed a separate £3 millioninvestment into a new multi-storey carpark, which has been constructed byBourne Parking and will enable 400extra cars to park at Harlow Town.

Mark Phillips, deputy managingdirector of NXEA, said: “We have beendelighted to work in partnership withHarlow Renaissance and Essex CountyCouncil on the improvement scheme atHarlow Town and with Bourne Parkingto construct the new car park whichtogether has totally transformed thestation. I am very grateful for the supportof our partners which has enabled thisproject to proceed.”

Helping town’s homeless

Q uite a bit has been going on overthe past week or so. HarlowHomeless Centre: I have visitedStreets 2 Homes twice over the

past two weeks to meet some of thehomeless and discuss issues with actingdirector Patsy Dye. We are workinghard to get the Government to changethe law to ensure that housing benefit ispaid directly to landlords, which wouldhelp the homeless considerably.

 Apprentices: Some good news here.I have had regular meetings with CllrRay Gooding and Cllr Stephen Castlefrom Essex County Council to help push

our Apprenticeship programme forward.I have also met with Dean Barclay (partowner of Harlow Greyhound Stadium),who has agreed to sponsor myapprentice, jointly with Essex CountyCouncil. He has also agreed to place twoapprentices from Harlow College withhis construction company from 2011.

Harlow courts: Sadly, both thecounty and magistrates’ court faceclosure under the reorganisation of thelegal system across the UK. Last week I

met with Harlow County Court staff andlocal solicitors Attwaters, so as to getlocal views to help me with mysubmission to the Government.

Sheep: The highlight of the pastweek or so has to be the sheep we areseeing all over Harlow. It is well worth

going to the Gibberd Gallery to see theincredible sculptures and etchings. It isa very proud artistic time for Harlow –particularly given our status as ahistoric sculpture town. I was pleased tobe given a small sheep – a lamb perhaps– which will be displayed proudly in myHouse of Commons Office.

Well, as the cartoons say, that’s all fornow folks. Next week, I am off toNorthumberland and Cumbria for ashort break.
