The station, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last month, has been transformed through a partnership between National Express East Anglia (NXEA), Harlow Renaissance and Essex County Council (ECC). The £390,000 project has renewed the station’s buildings and provided easier access for customers, whilst retaining the unique features of the grade II listed building. The station overbridge has been opened up and refurbished and there are two new waiting areas, timetable boards and a d isplay of station memorabilia charting its history. New lifts have also been installed to provide improved access for disabled customers and for those with pushchairs or heavy luggage.  Andrew Bramidge, chief executive of Harlow Renaissance, said: “As a g ateway into Harlow, the station presents the first image many visitors will have of the town therefore its appearance is of the upmost importance to help deliver a positive and welcoming impression.” Harlow MP Robert Halfon attended the ceremony to officially re-open the station, whilst the Harlow Steel Band provided some fantastic entertainment. To round off the transformation, NXEA has completed a separate £3 million investment into a new multi-storey car park, which has been constructed by Bourne Parking and will enable 400 extra cars to park at Harlow Town. Mark Phillips, deputy managing director of NXEA, said: “We have been delighted to work in partnership with Harlow Renaissance and Essex County Council on the improvement scheme at Harlow Town and with Bourne Parking to construct the new car park which together has totally transformed the station. I am very grateful for the support of our partners which has enabled this project to proceed.” RAIL: Town station gets major upgrade From left: station manager Kevin Walton, Cllr Rogers Walters (Essex County Council), Mark Phillips (NXEA managing director), Rob Halfon MP and Andrew Bramidge (Harlow Renaissance) ND_300710_Station opening Helping town’s homeless Q uite a bit has been going on over the past week or so. Harlow Homeless Centre: I have visited Streets 2 Homes twice over the past two weeks to meet some of the homeless and discuss issues with acting director Patsy Dye. We are working hard to get the Government to change the law to ensure that housing benefit is paid directly to landlords, which would help the homeless considerably.  Apprentices: Some good news here. I have had regular meetings with Cllr Ray Gooding and Cllr Stephen Castle from Essex County Council to help push our Apprenticeship programme forward. I have also met with Dean Barclay (part owner of Harlow Greyhound Stadium), who has agreed to sponsor my apprentice, jointly with Essex County Council. He has also agreed to place two apprentices from Harlow College with his construction company from 2011. Harlow courts: Sadly, both the county and magistrates’ court face closure under the reorganisation of the legal system across the UK. Last week I met with Harlow County Court staff and local solicitors Attwaters, so as to get local views to help me with my submission to the Government. Sheep: The highlight of the past week or so has to be the sheep we are seeing all over Harlow. It is well worth going to the Gibberd Gallery to see the incredible sculptures and etchings. It is a very proud artistic time for Harlow – particularly given our status as a historic sculpture town. I was pleased to be given a small sheep – a lamb perhaps – which will be displayed proudly in my House of Commons Office. Well, as the cartoons say, that’s all for now folks. Next week, I am off to Northumberlan d and Cumbria for a short break. ROBERT HALFON MP What do you think? E-mail [email protected]
