Allie Cunningham ('09) hasbegun her fourth summer andthird full year in Alaska. Thisspring she got engaged toHollis Swan, who she met inher first summer working on afish tender in Prince WilliamSound. Allie and Hollis live inSoldotna, Alaska with a blacklab mix named Fitz. Allie'smost recent adventuresinclude becoming a state andfederal wildland firefighterand leading a YouthConservation Corps for theKenai National WildlifeRefuge. She fills her free timewith a steady yoga practiceand wandering ridgelines withher adventure buddies.
Matthew Ciulla ('10) wasone of four Notre Dame LawSchool students who recentlywon an international law andreligion moot courtcompetition in Venice, Italy,held at the 2016 FondazioneStudium.
Erin Bortz ('10) writes, "Iworked at Sycamore Schoolfrom 2014-2015 aftergraduating from college as a1st grade assistant. Lastyear, I attended MarianUniversity where I received aMasters of Teaching degreeas well as my K-6 TeachingLicense. I will start atSycamore as a 3rd grademath and science teacher inAugust. Another fun fact -- Iam engaged to UHS andSycamore School alumnus,Daniel Hellman ('10)."
Melissa Burke ('10) writes inabout her work at SycamoreSchool. "I started as theSpanish TA in August 2014,but I will start as a full-timeinstructor this August. I havebeen planning the secondyear for our Spanish Jr.Honors Society chapter that Istarted last year and havebeen working to revamp thecurriculum." Outside ofschool, Melissa has coachedtwo volleyball teams at AAUNationals in Orlando, and shewill visit family in Portland,OR later this summer.
Kenzie Kittle ('10) writes,"Jordon and I got married inKruger National Park in SouthAfrica on May 23, 2016. Itwas certainly a destinationwedding in every sense! Werented out a safari camp forour family and spent the dayof our wedding tracking acheetah that had just made akill and walking with abreeding heard of elephants.We held our small ceremonyon a cliff overlooking the parkand even had giraffes,elephants, and baboonswalking below us! After theceremony we took a smallsafari and had a privatedinner in the bush and evendanced with a local tribe tothe traditional South Africanwedding songs.
"I actually met Jordon when Iwas a senior at University (hewent to Westfield), and hecame to have lunch withMarysia Cole and I all thetime! It's crazy to think wewere so young then, and weare now husband and wife!"
Grace Harsha ('12) traveledto Quito, Ecuador with TimmyGlobal Health in January.While in Quito, she spenttime setting up travel medicalclinics.
Catherine "Catie" Lockhart('12) is now an AdvancementAssociate with Coburn Placein Indianapolis.

Sara Hindi ('12) wasawarded the 2016 William M.Plater Civic EngagementMedallion. This award honorsgraduating IUPUI studentswho have shown acommitment to thecommunity and who havedeveloped an ethic of civicmindedness.
Hannah Meinen ('12) madeButler University's Dean's Listin Spring 2016 and is "makinga huge move at the end ofAugust." She will betransitioning and moving toMadrid, Spain to work as alanguage and cultureassistant in a high school.
Kelsey Rowles ('12) writes,"I recently got a job with theIndianapolis Colts as acommunity relationsassistant. Dream job!"
Haley Krieble ('12) wasaccepted as a 2016 CorpsMember and will be teaching1st grade in Indianapolis withTeach for America.
MacKenzie Cunningham('12) finished herundergraduate degree inmechanical engineering withhonors this spring and willstart her master's degree inmechanical engineering inthe fall with a graduate TAosition. She has been captainof the Women's Baja SAETeam, a design team thatbuilds an off-road vehicle, fortwo years. Embry-RiddleWomen's Baja was the firstall-female Baja team, and it isnow one of three in the world.MacKenzie's senior golfseason was closed out withthree team wins, oneindividual win, and anindividual runner-up finish.Last fall she started workingat Tesla Motors as an internin the Vehicle EngineeringTest Group, managing watermanagement for the Model X.This summer she is onceagain working in the VehicleEngineering Test Group,component testing for theModel X and Model 3.
J.T. Wood ('13) portrayedJean-Francois Millet in thespring production of Is HeDead, A New Comedy byMark Twain at OtterbeinUniversity.
Isabella Litwack ('13) isentering her senior year atBall State as a healtheducation major, with minorsin theatre, sociology, andwomen and gender studies.She has made the Dean'sList every semester and willbe applying to graduateschool in the fall, for amasters in public health. Thissummer she will be stagemanaging for the BoothTarkington Civic Theatre inCarmel.
John Reaser Cochrane ('13)has a summer job at thebiomedical/manufacturingengineering firm Prosolia.They create massspectrometers that are usedto test tissue forabnormalities and growths(cancer). He is working onprogramming the machinesand optimizing them to workas quickly and effectively aspossible. John writes, "I amvery excited about thisopportunity as it is directly inmy field of study (Electricaland Computer Engineering)and is also in the medicalfield, dealing specifically withcancer. This has always beena professional goal of mine,and the work I am doing iscreating a positivedifference."
Shawn Miller ('13) isentering his senior year at theUniversity of Indianapolis witha double major in accountingand finance. Since graduatingfrom University, he has hadmany internshipopportunities, including anaudit internship during thesummer of 2015, a taxinternship during the spring of2016, and anoutsourcing/valuationinternship this summer. Allthree internships were atCliftonLarsonAllen. Herecently accepted a full-timeoffer as a tax associate with astart date of August 2017.
Jack Sigman ('14), alongwith Butler classmates,created Java Threads, acompany that creates totesout of burlap coffee beanbags. Java Threads buyseach bag for $1 fromHubbard and Cravens, whichdonates the money to adifferent nonprofit eachmonth.
Abby Troughton ('14) is in asketch comedy club atIndiana University andperforms stand-up. At IU, sheis studying to become anelementary school teacherand has made the Dean'sList.
Inchara Raj ('14) wasrecently interviewed by the IUhistory department to discussher interest in history andmedicine. The story was thenpublished as a StudentSpotlight. She is also workingas a research assistant in anIU chemistry lab thatanalyzes the Hepatitis B virususing Charge Detection MassSpectrometry, which can leadto the development of certainantiviral therapy drugs.
Emma Troughton ('15)writes, "My freshman year, Imade the Dean's List at UCSanta Cruz, and my acapellagroup placed 1st inquarterfinals in Berkeley forICCAs (InternationalCompetition for CollegiateAcapella). We then traveledto compete in Oregon."
Lizzie Berry ('15) made thePresident's List bothsemesters this year at RollinsCollege and is spending thesummer working with her artprofessor on a piece of studiofurniture that responds to therecent pandemic of Zikaassociated with Brazil. Shealso plans on being an RAnext school year.

University High School Receives Grantfrom Edward E. Ford FoundationUniversity High School was recently awarded a $50,000 challenge grant from theEdward E. Ford Foundation in order to establish a E. E. Ford Fellows program.
The grant, which must be matched with cash gifts to total $100,000, will allowUniversity teachers to learn about current best practices and recent innovations inteaching and learning from schools and experts across the country. We will beable to invite educational experts to campus next fall, identify and then travel toschools who are approaching assessment, pedagogy, scheduling and otherprogram elements in interesting ways, while building relationships with peoplewho can help us as we think about how to make our very good academic programeven better.

Musical Theatre J-Term Class CreatesUniversity High School: The MusicalStudents in our Musical Theatre J-Term class presented their 34-minute originalproduction -- "University High School: The Musical" to students and faculty at aJanuary assembly.
The entire show was written by students in the J-Term class and featuresoriginal numbers like "We Don't Do That Here," "Let Them Eat Cake," and "IfIt's Not Yours, Don't Touch It." Click here to view an almost-complete video ofthe show on YouTube.
University Wins SIA Silver Service AwardIn March, a team of University High School students won a Silver Service Awardin the Students in Action (SIA) Indianapolis Spring Competition.
This was University High School's first year in the competition, and we placedthird out of all Indiana schools. The team of Trailblazer students shared how theyhelped lead, engage, and impact their school to encourage and promotecommunity service this year through the Year of Service program.
Students in Action is a program of the Jefferson Awards Foundation, and thereare more than 400 high schools who participate in SIA nationwide.
Coed Lacrosse Team Makes School HistoryA group of 18 student-athletes, led by Cameron Nealy ('16) and EdwardHenderson ('16), made history this spring. They competed on University HighSchool's first-ever lacrosse team!
In addition to Nealy and Henderson, the coed team was made up of juniors WillFair, Eric Jung, Christian Means, Kelsey Miller, and Akhil Vadlamudi; sophomoresThomas Burgess, Joey Callan, Rebecca Elliott, Jon Gray, Phil Magnus, and NoahThomas; and freshmen Ari Atlas, Parker Baumann, Chuckie O'Farrell, FreddieO'Farrell, and Neil Pettinga.
Sophomore Jay Maturi Takes Third inDivision at Intel's International Science FairUniversity High School sophomore Jay Maturiwas one of just 18 Indiana high schoolstudents to compete in the Intel InternationalScience and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF)from May 8-13, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ.
Maturi's research project, titled "Effectsof Chlorella algae on mortality rates ofzebrafish exposed to methylmercury," earnedhim third place in his division at theinternational competition and second placeamong all 10th grade entries at the 28thAnnual Hoosier Science and EngineeringFair.

Student Artists Make National HeadlinesThe 2015-16 school year was a big one for student-artists at University HighSchool. From photography to music, our students were recognized in manyoutstanding ways.
UHS Musicians Perform at Carnegie HallUniversity High School juniors Anjali Papadopoulos and Jacob Benson performedin April with Indiana's New World Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in NewYork City. Anjali plays the flute, and Jacob plays the cello.
Megan Roeschlein ('16) Named Finalist inPhotography ContestRecent graduate Megan Roeschlein ('16) was nameda finalist in the 36th annual Photographer's Forum College& High School Photography Contest this spring. Megan's photograph (see right) was one of 600 finalistsselected from a pool of 10,000 high school and collegeentries.
Roeschlein's photograph will also be featured with allwinners, honorable mentions, and finalists in the Best ofCollege & High School Photography 2016 limited editionhardcover book out later this year.
MCA Chicago to Feature Rebecca Inskeep ('16) InstallationThe Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago selected recent graduateRebecca Inskeep ('16) to participate in their prestigious 21Minus exhibition onSaturday, June 11.
21Minus is the MCA's annual exposition of teen creativity and passion. The eventfeatures workshops, performances, art installations, and interventions -- alldesigned to showcase the talents of the next generation of artists.
Ceramics Piece Selected for National ExhibitionThe National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition Foundation selected a piece by UHS juniorJacob Sears to be showcased in their 19th Annual National K-12Ceramic Exhibition in Kansas City this March.
The National Exhibition was held in conjunction with the annual internationalconference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. It isdesigned to showcase the best K-12 ceramic work made in the country, andJacob's piece was one of more than 1,300 entries nationwide.
UHS FACULTY & STAFF NEWSLuke Crawley Designs IMA Mini Golf HoleAs part of the IMA's "Mini Golf at the IMA" exhibit celebrating the state'sBicentennial, UHS math and science teacher Luke Crawley designed a mini golfhole that, when hit perfectly, plays the melody of "(Back Home Again in) Indiana."Learn more about Mr. Crawley's piece and see a video.

Departures of Faculty & StaffAssistant Head of School Jamie Napier said goodbye to University High Schoollast month so he could take over as Middle School Director of The OrchardSchool.
Director of Advancement Jeannie Sager left University High School in June tobecome the new Director of Major Gifts at the Methodist Health Foundation.
Music Instructor Josh Harris stepped down at University High School so he couldmove home and return to his teaching position at Sweet Briar College.
Promotions & Additions of Faculty & StaffShannon Swann, Dir. of International ProgramsThis semester, former French teacher Shannon Swann wasnamed University High School's first Director of InternationalPrograms. In this newly created role, Mme. Swann will supportUniversity High School's growing international studentpopulation and explore new opportunities for UHS students tostudy and travel abroad.
Callie Hartz, Acting Instructor & Musical DirectorIn January, University High School welcomed a new actingteacher and musical director, Callie Hartz. Callie came toUniversity with extensive acting and teaching experience, thelatter from teaching stints at Anderson University and IUPUI.She had directed musicals at Noblesville High School, andshe remains heavily involved in local theatre, including theWisdom Tooth Theatre Project in Indianapolis.
Daniel Knox, Music InstructorUniversity High School is excited to announce that Daniel Knox will be our new music teacher for the 2016-17school year. Mr. Knox comes to University from CannonSchool (Concord, NC) where he is the band director for themiddle and upper school. He has several years of experienceteaching band and orchestra at the middle and high schoollevels.
Meredith Hogan, Math InstructorMeredith Hogan will be a new math teacher at UniversityHigh School starting this fall. Ms. Hogan comes to UniversityHigh School from the Early Career Academy in Indianapolis,where she taught high school math. Prior to taking a positionat the Early Career Academy, she spent three years teachingmath and science and coaching robotics at The BuckleySchool, an independent K-12 school in Sherman Oaks, CA.
Anna Shailer, French InstructorAnna Shailer will join University High School as aFrench/ESL teacher this fall. Ms. Shailer comes to Universitywith extensive teaching experience at both the high schooland the college level. Most recently, she was an adjunctprofessor of French at Indiana University-Purdue UniversityIndianapolis and a part-time French teacher at Roncalli HighSchool in Indianapolis.
Nila Nealy, Communications CoordinatorToday, University High School announced the addition of NilaNealy as the school's new Communications Coordinator. Ms.Nealy comes to University with more than 20 years ofexperience as a marketing professional and brand strategist,and she is also the mother of recent graduate Cameron Nealy('16) and rising junior Alexa Nealy.
