July 1, 2016 In This Issue Alumni Events Recent News Keep in Touch! Alumni Updates Elyse (Phillips) Perez ('05) writes, "My husband and I have a son, Eli, who was born February 7, 2015. I live in Bloomfield, NJ and work in New York City as an event planner for First Protocol at Goldman Sachs. I am also a member of our company's CSR committee (co-chair of the FP Fit Club, managing employee participation in 5Ks)." Kate Pedersen ('06) started working at CenterPoint Counseling in March 2016. Jeff (Chris) Chamberlain ('07) joined the Rooster Teeth game development team in Austin, TX Meredith Faller ('07) graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in May and will start working as a Family Medicine resident at St. Vincent Indianapolis this summer. Katie Silver ('08) recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign for her comic, Paper Triangle. Katie Walls ('08) married Brandon Pugh on September 19, 2015. They would like to thank the UHS string ensemble for being a part of their day. Cory Lingner ('09) was nominated for an Astaire Award: Outstanding Male Dancer Off-Broadway for his work in Once Upon A Mattress. Astaire Awards honor excellence in dance and choreography on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in film. Jessica (Rouda) Marks ('09) writes, "In August 2014, my beautiful little girl, Julia Emily Marks was born. I married her father in April. She helped him propose over Christmas of 2014. I just started my new career at the BMV Contact Center. I work downtown at the government center." Allie Cunningham ('09) has begun her fourth summer and third full year in Alaska. This spring she got engaged to Hollis Swan, who she met in her first summer working on a fish tender in Prince William Sound. Allie and Hollis live in Soldotna, Alaska with a black lab mix named Fitz. Allie's most recent adventures include becoming a state and federal wildland firefighter and leading a Youth Conservation Corps for the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. She fills her free time with a steady yoga practice and wandering ridgelines with her adventure buddies. Matthew Ciulla ('10) was one of four Notre Dame Law School students who recently won an international law and religion moot court competition in Venice, Italy, held at the 2016 Fondazione Studium. Erin Bortz ('10) writes, "I worked at Sycamore School from 2014-2015 after graduating from college as a 1st grade assistant. Last year, I attended Marian University where I received a Masters of Teaching degree as well as my K-6 Teaching License. I will start at Sycamore as a 3rd grade math and science teacher in August. Another fun fact -- I am engaged to UHS and Sycamore School alumnus, Daniel Hellman ('10)." Melissa Burke ('10) writes in about her work at Sycamore School. "I started as the Spanish TA in August 2014, but I will start as a full-time instructor this August. I have been planning the second year for our Spanish Jr. Honors Society chapter that I started last year and have been working to revamp the curriculum." Outside of school, Melissa has coached two volleyball teams at AAU Nationals in Orlando, and she will visit family in Portland, OR later this summer. Kenzie Kittle ('10) writes, "Jordon and I got married in Kruger National Park in South Africa on May 23, 2016. It was certainly a destination wedding in every sense! We rented out a safari camp for our family and spent the day of our wedding tracking a cheetah that had just made a kill and walking with a breeding heard of elephants. We held our small ceremony on a cliff overlooking the park and even had giraffes, elephants, and baboons walking below us! After the ceremony we took a small safari and had a private dinner in the bush and even danced with a local tribe to the traditional South African wedding songs. "I actually met Jordon when I was a senior at University (he went to Westfield), and he came to have lunch with Marysia Cole and I all the time! It's crazy to think we were so young then, and we are now husband and wife!" Grace Harsha ('12) traveled to Quito, Ecuador with Timmy Global Health in January. While in Quito, she spent time setting up travel medical clinics. Catherine "Catie" Lockhart ('12) is now an Advancement Associate with Coburn Place in Indianapolis. Daniel Orians ('12) wrote an article titled "From Obstacle to Overcoming" for the January edition of Currents Journal, a magazine for scuba educators. Sara Hindi ('12) was awarded the 2016 William M. Plater Civic Engagement Medallion. This award honors graduating IUPUI students who have shown a commitment to the community and who have developed an ethic of civic mindedness. Hannah Meinen ('12) made Butler University's Dean's List in Spring 2016 and is "making a huge move at the end of August." She will be transitioning and moving to Madrid, Spain to work as a language and culture assistant in a high school. Kelsey Rowles ('12) writes, "I recently got a job with the Indianapolis Colts as a community relations assistant. Dream job!" Haley Krieble ('12) was accepted as a 2016 Corps Member and will be teaching 1st grade in Indianapolis with Teach for America. MacKenzie Cunningham ('12) finished her undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering with honors this spring and will start her master's degree in mechanical engineering in the fall with a graduate TA osition. She has been captain of the Women's Baja SAE Team, a design team that builds an off-road vehicle, for two years. Embry-Riddle Women's Baja was the first all-female Baja team, and it is now one of three in the world. MacKenzie's senior golf season was closed out with three team wins, one individual win, and an individual runner-up finish. Last fall she started working at Tesla Motors as an intern in the Vehicle Engineering Test Group, managing water management for the Model X. This summer she is once again working in the Vehicle Engineering Test Group, component testing for the Model X and Model 3. J.T. Wood ('13) portrayed Jean-Francois Millet in the spring production of Is He Dead, A New Comedy by Mark Twain at Otterbein University. Isabella Litwack ('13) is entering her senior year at Ball State as a health education major, with minors in theatre, sociology, and women and gender studies. She has made the Dean's List every semester and will be applying to graduate school in the fall, for a masters in public health. This summer she will be stage managing for the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre in Carmel. John Reaser Cochrane ('13) has a summer job at the biomedical/manufacturing engineering firm Prosolia. They create mass spectrometers that are used to test tissue for abnormalities and growths (cancer). He is working on programming the machines and optimizing them to work as quickly and effectively as possible. John writes, "I am very excited about this opportunity as it is directly in my field of study (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and is also in the medical field, dealing specifically with cancer. This has always been a professional goal of mine, and the work I am doing is creating a positive difference." Shawn Miller ('13) is entering his senior year at the University of Indianapolis with a double major in accounting and finance. Since graduating from University, he has had many internship opportunities, including an audit internship during the summer of 2015, a tax internship during the spring of 2016, and an outsourcing/valuation internship this summer. All three internships were at CliftonLarsonAllen. He recently accepted a full-time offer as a tax associate with a start date of August 2017. Jack Sigman ('14), along with Butler classmates, created Java Threads, a company that creates totes out of burlap coffee bean bags. Java Threads buys each bag for $1 from Hubbard and Cravens, which donates the money to a different nonprofit each month. Abby Troughton ('14) is in a sketch comedy club at Indiana University and performs stand-up. At IU, she is studying to become an elementary school teacher and has made the Dean's List. Inchara Raj ('14) was recently interviewed by the IU history department to discuss her interest in history and medicine. The story was then published as a Student Spotlight. She is also working as a research assistant in an IU chemistry lab that analyzes the Hepatitis B virus using Charge Detection Mass Spectrometry, which can lead to the development of certain antiviral therapy drugs. Emma Troughton ('15) writes, "My freshman year, I made the Dean's List at UC Santa Cruz, and my acapella group placed 1st in quarterfinals in Berkeley for ICCAs (International Competition for Collegiate Acapella). We then traveled to compete in Oregon." Lizzie Berry ('15) made the President's List both semesters this year at Rollins College and is spending the summer working with her art professor on a piece of studio furniture that responds to the recent pandemic of Zika associated with Brazil. UHS ALUMNI EVENT UPDATES UHS Hosts Inaugural Alumni Weekend University High School hosted the inaugural Alumni Weekend from May 20-21, 2016. The weekend featured an alumni panel, a lunch with UHS faculty and staff, and an alumni student and parent reception with reunions for the Class of 2006 (10-year) and Class of 2011 (5-year). Thank you to all who came out! Be on the lookout for details about the 2017 Alumni Weekend at University High School -- featuring reunions for the Class of 2007 and Class of 2012! RECENT NEWS FROM UHS Big News in Mr. Webster's Summer Letter Visit our website to read Mr. Webster's end-of-year letter to the University community. This year's letter includes: Reflections on the 2015-16 school year Announcements of faculty babies and a teacher's wedding Details about a delayed start schedule for next year News about the end of ISTEP at UHS University High School Receives Grant from Edward E. Ford Foundation University High School was recently awarded a $50,000 challenge grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation in order to establish a E. E. Ford Fellows program. The grant, which must be matched with cash gifts to total $100,000, will allow University teachers to learn about current best practices and recent innovations in teaching and learning from schools and experts across the country. We will be able to invite educational experts to campus next fall, identify and then travel to schools who are approaching assessment, pedagogy, scheduling and other program elements in interesting ways, while building relationships with people who can help us as we think about how to make our very good academic program even better. Welcome to the New Class of UHS Alumni On Saturday, June 4, the 59 members of the University High School Class of 2016 graduated and officially joined the UHS Alumni Association! Congratulations to these Trailblazers! Musical Theatre J-Term Class Creates University High School: The Musical Students in our Musical Theatre J-Term class presented their 34-minute original production -- "University High School: The Musical" to students and faculty at a January assembly. The entire show was written by students in the J-Term class and features original numbers like "We Don't Do That Here," "Let Them Eat Cake," and "If It's Not Yours, Don't Touch It." University Wins SIA Silver Service Award In March, a team of University High School students won a Silver Service Award in the Students in Action (SIA) Indianapolis Spring Competition. This was University High School's first year in the competition, and we placed third out of all Indiana schools. The team of Trailblazer students shared how they helped lead, engage, and impact their school to encourage and promote community service this year through the Year of Service program. Students in Action is a program of the Jefferson Awards Foundation, and there are more than 400 high schools who participate in SIA nationwide. Coed Lacrosse Team Makes School History A group of 18 student-athletes, led by Cameron Nealy ('16) and Edward Henderson ('16), made history this spring. They competed on University High School's first-ever lacrosse team! In addition to Nealy and Henderson, the coed team was made up of juniors Will Fair, Eric Jung, Christian Means, Kelsey Miller, and Akhil Vadlamudi; sophomores Thomas Burgess, Joey Callan, Rebecca Elliott, Jon Gray, Phil Magnus, and Noah Thomas; and freshmen Ari Atlas, Parker Baumann, Chuckie O'Farrell, Freddie O'Farrell, and Neil Pettinga. Sophomore Jay Maturi Takes Third in Division at Intel's International Science Fair University High School sophomore Jay Maturi was one of just 18 Indiana high school students to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) from May 8-13, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ. Maturi's research project, titled "Effects of Chlorella algae on mortality rates of zebrafish exposed to methylmercury," earned him third place in his division at the international competition and second place among all 10th grade entries at the 28th Annual Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair. Read more about Maturi's research project and its findings. Student Artists Make National Headlines The 2015-16 school year was a big one for student-artists at University High School. From photography to music, our students were recognized in many outstanding ways. UHS Musicians Perform at Carnegie Hall University High School juniors Anjali Papadopoulos and Jacob Benson performed in April with Indiana's New World Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Anjali plays the flute, and Jacob plays the cello. Megan Roeschlein ('16) Named Finalist in Photography Contest Recent graduate Megan Roeschlein ('16) was named a finalist in the 36th annual Photographer's Forum College & High School Photography Contest this spring. Megan's photograph (see right) was one of 600 finalists selected from a pool of 10,000 high school and college entries. Roeschlein's photograph will also be featured with all winners, honorable mentions, and finalists in the Best of College & High School Photography 2016 limited edition hardcover book out later this year. MCA Chicago to Feature Rebecca Inskeep ('16) Installation The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago selected recent graduate Rebecca Inskeep ('16) to participate in their prestigious 21Minus exhibition on Saturday, June 11. 21Minus is the MCA's annual exposition of teen creativity and passion. The event features workshops, performances, art installations, and interventions -- all designed to showcase the talents of the next generation of artists. Ceramics Piece Selected for National Exhibition The National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition Foundation selected a piece by UHS junior Jacob Sears to be showcased in their 19th Annual National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition in Kansas City this March. The National Exhibition was held in conjunction with the annual international conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. It is designed to showcase the best K-12 ceramic work made in the country, and Jacob's piece was one of more than 1,300 entries nationwide. UHS FACULTY & STAFF NEWS Luke Crawley Designs IMA Mini Golf Hole As part of the IMA's "Mini Golf at the IMA" exhibit celebrating the state's Bicentennial, UHS math and science teacher Luke Crawley designed a mini golf hole that, when hit perfectly, plays the melody of "(Back Home Again in) Indiana." Learn more about Mr. Crawley's piece and see a video . Chris Bradley Delivers First Legacy Lecture University High School held the inaugural Legacy Lecture for senior families this May. History teacher Chris Bradley was the featured speaker and talked about his experience climbing mountains. View a video of his lecture online . University Faculty & Staff On The Move The end of the 2015-16 year was a time of transition for our faculty and staff. We said goodbye to some Trailblazers, but we welcomed many more to our ranks! Departures of Faculty & Staff Assistant Head of School Jamie Napier said goodbye to University High School last month so he could take over as Middle School Director of The Orchard School. Director of Advancement Jeannie Sager left University High School in June to become the new Director of Major Gifts at the Methodist Health Foundation. Music Instructor Josh Harris stepped down at University High School so he could move home and return to his teaching position at Sweet Briar College. Promotions & Additions of Faculty & Staff Shannon Swann, Dir. of International Programs This semester, former French teacher Shannon Swann was named University High School's first Director of International Programs. In this newly created role, Mme. Swann will support University High School's growing international student population and explore new opportunities for UHS students to study and travel abroad. Callie Hartz, Acting Instructor & Musical Director In January, University High School welcomed a new acting teacher and musical director, Callie Hartz. Callie came to University with extensive acting and teaching experience, the latter from teaching stints at Anderson University and IUPUI. She had directed musicals at Noblesville High School, and she remains heavily involved in local theatre, including the Wisdom Tooth Theatre Project in Indianapolis. Daniel Knox, Music Instructor University High School is excited to announce that Daniel Knox will be our new music teacher for the 2016-17 school year. Mr. Knox comes to University from Cannon School (Concord, NC) where he is the band director for the middle and upper school. He has several years of experience teaching band and orchestra at the middle and high school levels. Meredith Hogan, Math Instructor Meredith Hogan will be a new math teacher at University High School starting this fall. Ms. Hogan comes to University High School from the Early Career Academy in Indianapolis, where she taught high school math. Prior to taking a position at the Early Career Academy, she spent three years teaching math and science and coaching robotics at The Buckley School, an independent K-12 school in Sherman Oaks, CA. Anna Shailer, French Instructor Anna Shailer will join University High School as a French/ESL teacher this fall. Ms. Shailer comes to University with extensive teaching experience at both the high school and the college level. Most recently, she was an adjunct professor of French at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and a part-time French teacher at Roncalli High School in Indianapolis. Nila Nealy, Communications Coordinator Today, University High School announced the addition of Nila Nealy as the school's new Communications Coordinator. Ms. Nealy comes to University with more than 20 years of experience as a marketing professional and brand strategist, and she is also the mother of recent graduate Cameron Nealy ('16) and rising junior Alexa Nealy. University High School Receives Grantfrom Edward E. Ford FoundationUniversity High School was recently awarded a $50,000 challenge grant from theEdward E. Ford Foundation in order to establish a E. E. Ford Fellows program.

The grant, which must be matched with cash gifts to total $100,000, will allowUniversity teachers to learn about current best practices and recent innovations inteaching and learning from schools and experts across the country. We will beable to invite educational experts to campus next fall, identify and then travel toschools who are approaching assessment, pedagogy, scheduling and otherprogram elements in interesting ways, while building relationships with peoplewho can help us as we think about how to make our very good academic programeven better.

Welcome to the New Class of UHS AlumniOn Saturday, June 4, the 59 members of the University High School Class of2016 graduated and officially joined the UHS Alumni Association! Congratulationsto these Trailblazers!

Musical Theatre J-Term Class CreatesUniversity High School: The MusicalStudents in our Musical Theatre J-Term class presented their 34-minute originalproduction -- "University High School: The Musical" to students and faculty at aJanuary assembly.

The entire show was written by students in the J-Term class and featuresoriginal numbers like "We Don't Do That Here," "Let Them Eat Cake," and "IfIt's Not Yours, Don't Touch It." Click here to view an almost-complete video ofthe show on YouTube.

University Wins SIA Silver Service AwardIn March, a team of University High School students won a Silver Service Awardin the Students in Action (SIA) Indianapolis Spring Competition.

This was University High School's first year in the competition, and we placedthird out of all Indiana schools. The team of Trailblazer students shared how theyhelped lead, engage, and impact their school to encourage and promotecommunity service this year through the Year of Service program.

Students in Action is a program of the Jefferson Awards Foundation, and thereare more than 400 high schools who participate in SIA nationwide.

Coed Lacrosse Team Makes School HistoryA group of 18 student-athletes, led by Cameron Nealy ('16) and EdwardHenderson ('16), made history this spring. They competed on University HighSchool's first-ever lacrosse team!

In addition to Nealy and Henderson, the coed team was made up of juniors WillFair, Eric Jung, Christian Means, Kelsey Miller, and Akhil Vadlamudi; sophomoresThomas Burgess, Joey Callan, Rebecca Elliott, Jon Gray, Phil Magnus, and NoahThomas; and freshmen Ari Atlas, Parker Baumann, Chuckie O'Farrell, FreddieO'Farrell, and Neil Pettinga.

Sophomore Jay Maturi Takes Third inDivision at Intel's International Science FairUniversity High School sophomore Jay Maturiwas one of just 18 Indiana high schoolstudents to compete in the Intel InternationalScience and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF)from May 8-13, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ.

Maturi's research project, titled "Effectsof Chlorella algae on mortality rates ofzebrafish exposed to methylmercury," earnedhim third place in his division at theinternational competition and second placeamong all 10th grade entries at the 28thAnnual Hoosier Science and EngineeringFair.

Student Artists Make National HeadlinesThe 2015-16 school year was a big one for student-artists at University HighSchool. From photography to music, our students were recognized in manyoutstanding ways.

UHS Musicians Perform at Carnegie HallUniversity High School juniors Anjali Papadopoulos and Jacob Benson performedin April with Indiana's New World Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in NewYork City. Anjali plays the flute, and Jacob plays the cello.

Megan Roeschlein ('16) Named Finalist inPhotography ContestRecent graduate Megan Roeschlein ('16) was nameda finalist in the 36th annual Photographer's Forum College& High School Photography Contest this spring. Megan's photograph (see right) was one of 600 finalistsselected from a pool of 10,000 high school and collegeentries.

Roeschlein's photograph will also be featured with allwinners, honorable mentions, and finalists in the Best ofCollege & High School Photography 2016 limited editionhardcover book out later this year.

MCA Chicago to Feature Rebecca Inskeep ('16) InstallationThe Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago selected recent graduateRebecca Inskeep ('16) to participate in their prestigious 21Minus exhibition onSaturday, June 11.

21Minus is the MCA's annual exposition of teen creativity and passion. The eventfeatures workshops, performances, art installations, and interventions -- alldesigned to showcase the talents of the next generation of artists.

Ceramics Piece Selected for National ExhibitionThe National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition Foundation selected a piece by UHS juniorJacob Sears to be showcased in their 19th Annual National K-12Ceramic Exhibition in Kansas City this March.

The National Exhibition was held in conjunction with the annual internationalconference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. It isdesigned to showcase the best K-12 ceramic work made in the country, andJacob's piece was one of more than 1,300 entries nationwide.

UHS FACULTY & STAFF NEWSLuke Crawley Designs IMA Mini Golf HoleAs part of the IMA's "Mini Golf at the IMA" exhibit celebrating the state'sBicentennial, UHS math and science teacher Luke Crawley designed a mini golfhole that, when hit perfectly, plays the melody of "(Back Home Again in) Indiana."Learn more about Mr. Crawley's piece and see a video.

Chris Bradley Delivers First Legacy LectureUniversity High School held the inaugural Legacy Lecture for senior families thisMay. History teacher Chris Bradley was the featured speaker and talked about hisexperience climbing mountains. View a video of his lecture online.

University Faculty & Staff On The MoveThe end of the 2015-16 year was a time of transition for our faculty and staff. Wesaid goodbye to some Trailblazers, but we welcomed many more to our ranks!

Departures of Faculty & StaffAssistant Head of School Jamie Napier said goodbye to University High Schoollast month so he could take over as Middle School Director of The OrchardSchool.

Director of Advancement Jeannie Sager left University High School in June tobecome the new Director of Major Gifts at the Methodist Health Foundation.

Music Instructor Josh Harris stepped down at University High School so he couldmove home and return to his teaching position at Sweet Briar College.

Promotions & Additions of Faculty & StaffShannon Swann, Dir. of International ProgramsThis semester, former French teacher Shannon Swann wasnamed University High School's first Director of InternationalPrograms. In this newly created role, Mme. Swann will supportUniversity High School's growing international studentpopulation and explore new opportunities for UHS students tostudy and travel abroad.

Callie Hartz, Acting Instructor & Musical DirectorIn January, University High School welcomed a new actingteacher and musical director, Callie Hartz. Callie came toUniversity with extensive acting and teaching experience, thelatter from teaching stints at Anderson University and IUPUI.She had directed musicals at Noblesville High School, andshe remains heavily involved in local theatre, including theWisdom Tooth Theatre Project in Indianapolis.

Daniel Knox, Music InstructorUniversity High School is excited to announce that Daniel Knox will be our new music teacher for the 2016-17school year. Mr. Knox comes to University from CannonSchool (Concord, NC) where he is the band director for themiddle and upper school. He has several years of experienceteaching band and orchestra at the middle and high schoollevels.

Meredith Hogan, Math InstructorMeredith Hogan will be a new math teacher at UniversityHigh School starting this fall. Ms. Hogan comes to UniversityHigh School from the Early Career Academy in Indianapolis,where she taught high school math. Prior to taking a positionat the Early Career Academy, she spent three years teachingmath and science and coaching robotics at The BuckleySchool, an independent K-12 school in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Anna Shailer, French InstructorAnna Shailer will join University High School as aFrench/ESL teacher this fall. Ms. Shailer comes to Universitywith extensive teaching experience at both the high schooland the college level. Most recently, she was an adjunctprofessor of French at Indiana University-Purdue UniversityIndianapolis and a part-time French teacher at Roncalli HighSchool in Indianapolis.

Nila Nealy, Communications CoordinatorToday, University High School announced the addition of NilaNealy as the school's new Communications Coordinator. Ms.Nealy comes to University with more than 20 years ofexperience as a marketing professional and brand strategist,and she is also the mother of recent graduate Cameron Nealy('16) and rising junior Alexa Nealy.
