Where have we come from? • Although we only have 30MWp
installed too date, the UK PV Industry have been ac/ve for over 20 years
• The Northumberland Building, the First and Largest BIPV Facade in the World – 40kWp in 1996
• Ford Bridgend, the Largest PV Installa/on on a Commercial Building -‐ 26 PV Rooflights, 103kWp in 1998
And there were more!
• The Earth Centre, the Largest PV Glass Canopy in the World – 106kWp in 1999
• BedZed Zero Carbon Development and Winner of the World Energy Globe Award – 108kWp in 2001
Raised Awareness
• Developed and demonstrated the BP Service Sta/on PV Systems as a PV awareness raising process prior to roll out in various countries in the world
• Crystalline PV – Sunflower (s/ll working)
• Thin Film PV -‐ Harmony (complete failure)
Iconic Designs
• Demonstra/on of future energy efficient building design with integrated Solar PV playing its part
• Worked closely with Architects, Engineers and Building Industry to develop PV Iconic Designs to help showcase PV
Developed BIPV Products • Working with the Building
Industry to develop BIPV products, most of which are exported
Which businesses can benefit? ALL :-‐
• Designers • Manufacturers • Suppliers • Installers • Maintenance Even without any marke/ng too date! Even from the U/li/es!
Where are the immediate benefits? Significant growth in all sectors
happening:-‐
• Domes/c Market • Social Housing Sector • Public Buildings • Commercial Buildings
• Large Roofs • Farm Buildings
• PV Fields Crea/on of jobs in both Manufacturing
and Installa/on
What market growth is expected?
• with only 30MWp installed in the first 20 years
• To 40MWp to 100MWp predicted in 2011
• And anywhere from 200MWp to 750MWp in 2012
• Many talking of UK being the “new” Germany!
Which business models might evolve? • The “Genera/on Tariff” allows some
interes/ng business models – “Free PV Installa/on” with benefits of the electricity for use in the building, at no charge, and the customer earnings from the “Export Tariff”
• Un/l a Smart Meter is installed, some/me between 2013 to 2020, Domes/c Housing is “deemed” that 50% of all genera/on is exported
• Commercial installa/ons will have output measured from the start
What problems can be an/cipated? • Shortage of a skilled workforce for the Design,
Installa/on and Sales
• Possibly inadequate Supply Chain / Distribu/on Network not able to respond to demand
• Rapid growth could exceed available supply / alloca/on to UK of both PV Modules and Inverters
• Quick learning curve required on the Design and Installa/on of PV Fields
• Planners need educa/ng! PermiQed Development on Housing
• DNO’s need to be brought on side! G59 Regs
Impact of other Regula/ons? • UK have other Regula/ons that
assist the growth and adop/on of PV:-‐
• New Build Planning Requirements – 10% to 20% electricity generated on site
• Code for Sustainable Homes Zero Carbon Houses by 2016
• All new Buildings to be Zero Carbon by 2019
• MCS process will be developed!
Educa/on s/ll required?
