‘Circular Economy’ approaches need biophysicaland energetic realism:

Cycles at local and regional scale use less energyand have less negative environmental, social andeconomic impacts.

In the long run we will need to contract the flows inthe technical (fossil material) cycle and increase the flows in the biological cycles.

There are chemical, physical and energetic limits to recycling and up-cycling for most elements

Regionally focussed biomaterials-based circulareconomies require high levels of policy regulation tooptimise the cascading use of resources.

E.R.O.E.I. (Energy Return on Energy Invested) - a ratio of the energy needed to drill, mine or build energy sources to the amount of energy obtained

M.O.R.E.I. (Material Return on Energy Inverted) - a ratio of the amount of energy needed to extract minerals to the amount of pure/concentrated materials obtained

There are three types of limits to obtaining metals & minerals:

Economic Limit - too expensive to mine in the current economyMineralogical Limit - too low concentration in substrate to mineEnergy Limit - mining requires critical amount of energy (needed for other uses)

Economic feedback diagrams that show the energy inputs to the economy and the resulting outputs are used for at different times (past and future) based on actual and expected E.R.O.E.I.

Discretionary expenditure is everything we can expect the economic systems to do for us other than just maintain itself.
