Banks are considered to be the back bone of the country's
economy. Its more true for a developing country like India. Indian
banking system is very strong. In the global financial turmoil that
happened some time ago, our country was least affected
because of soundness of Indian Banking & Financial System.
Banks in India are not only strong, but also growing fast.
According the studies, the banking sector is one of the fastest
growing sectors in our country. This growth has brought many
opportunities. The banking industry is recruiting on a large scale.
The banks conduct exams for the following cadres :
1. Bank Probationary Officer (PO)
2. Bank Clerks
3. Bank Specialist Officer (SO) in HR/Marketing/IT
A Probationary Officer (PO) in the bank is the starting level appointment for bank officers. The Probationary
Officers have a one year or two years of probationary period during which they are given exposure to various
important functions of the bank such as Loans & Advances, Foreign Exchange, Credit Rating, Treasury, Risk
Management, IT, Marketing, etc.
A Bank Clerk is a financial service professional who serves as the primary point of contact for most bank
customers, administering basic banking transactions, documentation, and administrative functions. A Clerk is
mostly a front office staff in a bank. Depending on the requirement, Clerks are placed at different counters of
the bank.
Banks also conduct recruitment exams for Specialist Officers cadre to manage their finance, legal, human
resource, marketing, systems and other departments which are open to candidates having requisite
professional qualifications in Engineering, Charted Accountancy, Law, Degree in MBA, MCA, etc.
Generally, the bank examinations are of the following types :
1. A series of Common Written Examinations (CWEs) conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel
Selection (IBPS) as a prerequisite for the selection of personnel for Probationary Officer /
Management Trainee / Clerk / Specialist Officer posts in 20 Public Sector banks (IDBI is new entrant)
with BMB and for Officers and Office Assistants in 46* Regional Rural Banks
2. Exam conducted by SBI and SBI Associate banks for recruitment to the posts of clerks and officers
3. Exam conducted by Private Sector banks for recruitment to the posts of Clerks and officers

The time taken by banks to complete the recruitment process,
which was 7-9 months earlier, has come-down to 3-4 months with
the introduction of the first of its kind “Common Written Examination
(CWE)” in 2011. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS)
conducts the CWE. This examination is the pre-requisite for selection
of per sonne l fo r the pos t s o f C le rk s/P robat ionary
Officer/Management Trainee in 20 Public Sector Banks. IBPS will also
conduct a separate CWE for recruitment of Specialist Officers (IT,
Law, HR, Agriculture Officers, etc.).
IBPS conducts series of CWEs in a year-one for each of PO,
Clerical, Specialist Officers for recruitment for recruitment into 20 Public Sector Banks and 82 Regional
Rural Banks to cater to the need of the industry and also to the needs of job aspirants.
The first ever CWE for PO/MT was held in September 2011, for Clerks it was held in November 2011, for
Specialist Officers it was conducted in March 2011 and for RRBs in September 2012.
Except for SBI, almost all the major Public Sector Banks are participating in the CWE. The 20 banks
which are participating in the CWE are Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India,
Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Corporation Bank, Dena Bank, IDBI bank,
Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Punjab National Bank, Punjab & Sind
Bank, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India, United Bank of India, UCO Bank and Vijaya Bank.
Some of the old private banks have also decided to use the IBPS CWE scores to recruit candidates
for officers and clerks posts in their banks. These banks will now start considering the IBPS CWE scores to
fill the PO / Clerks vacancies in their banks. Apart from these private banks, financial institutes like
ECGC are also recruiting on the basis of IBPS scores.

Subject-Wise Preparation Strategy
Banking, Railway & SSC recruitments attract lakhs of people because of the security, well paid jobs
and great career prospects. But in this alarming increase of competition, one has to find the right way
to gain the top spot, otherwise he/she will find himself/herself lagging behind in the long run. In a top
competition, it is very important for the aspirants to understand how they should approach the paper
and what should be the correct strategy for the preparation of Competitive Examinations. In this
context, we are sharing the subject-wise preparation strategy to crack the upcoming competitive
examinations.
Quantitative Aptitude in competitive examinations can be divided into six sections
Understanding of numbers, their relations and their applications are needed for us as it may help us in
calculating various data or analysis charts and dealing with calculations. Numbers are extremely useful
in our life. We need numbers to calculate our electricity bills, water bills, to buy certain items etc.
This module includes the basic knowledge of various types of numbers such as rational and irrational
numbers, prime numbers and their properties, simplification questions based on VBODMAS and Basic
Formulae, HCF and LCM, Remainders, Divisibility Tests, Unit Digit, Hundredth, etc. This module also
includes the questions on basic calculations such as Additions, Subtractions, Multiplications, Divisions,
Percentage, etc.
In this module, topics covered include Percentage and its Properties, Simple & Compound Interest,
Ratio & Proportion and its Properties (Partnership and Mixtures), Time, Speed & Distance (including the
concept of trains, boats & streams) and Time & Work, which also covers questions on Pipes and Cisterns.
Questions in this module are more scoring than those of other modules, as they are easy to interpret and
also there are very few concepts that one has to master to do well in these topics.
These questions involve use of concepts and tricks of the Number System. Some short and easily
memorised tricks may prove helpful in such problems. Sometimes, approximate calculations may be
useful in eliminating the wrong choices in the answer options.

3. Algebra
4. Geometry and Mensuration
5. Modern Mathematics
6. Data Interpretation
This module contains Surds and Indices, Basics of Polynomials, Linear Equations in One, Two Variables,
Quadratic Equations and Progressions (AP, GP & HP). Aspirants of SSC Exams are advised to go
through the basic concepts of algebra.
In geometry we have topics like basics of Lines, Angles, Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Circles & their
Properties, Area & Perimeter of various figures like Triangle, Quadrilateral, Circle, etc. and Volume of
figures like Cylinder, Cone, Sphere, Hemisphere, etc. Students should go through the basic theorems
and the formulae to find the area and the volume of different figures. Also one should know where to
use the concept of surface area and where to use the concept of total areas. Questions on sectors
and segments are also important. Questions where one has to find the shaded area are the most
important from this module. Aspirants of SSC Exams are advised to go through in depth coverage of
Geometry & Mensuration. In Banking & Railway Exams questions are generally asked from
Mensuration.
This has topics like Permutations & Combinations, Probability (examples are throwing of dice). From
this module two or three questions of moderate to high difficulty level will be asked in the Banking
examinations.
The questions in this section are based on tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts & case studies. To
score well in this section one has to
Prepare the various ways of presenting the relation between the numbers
Ÿ Learn the various ways of presenting data such as tables, graphs etc.
Ÿ Learn the type and nature of graph involved in a certain problem as it can signal about the right
answer
Ÿ Learn the basic rules of simplification, calculations and approximation
Ÿ Practice of doing the fast calculating with proper accuracy
Ÿ Learn the concept of average and percentage very well
Ÿ Develop the appropriate understanding of the concept “Ratio and Proportion”.
The whole of data interpretation problems hinges upon calculating the average, percentage and
ratios of the variables. Carrying out the fast and accurate calculations play a big role here which can
be developed by only practicing more and more with proper time management skills.

The Indian railways are broadly divided and sub-divided into zones, divisions and departments,
each controlling a particular function. Every division has a certain number of technical and non-
technical departments, which form the base structure on which the railways function. Technical
departments include civil, technical and mechanical engineering, signalling and telecom, and
several others dealing with similar disciplines, while the non-technical departments include general
services such as accounts, personnel management. Railway Protection Force (RPF) or security and
traffic services, among others. Each department has staff at various levels. The highest are the Group
A officers, while the lowest in rank are the Group D staff members.
UPSC - Group A officers are recruited by UPSC
Civil Service Examination - Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) and the Indian Railways Accounts
Service (IRAS)
Combined Engineering Service - Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Indian Railway Service of
Electrical Engineers (IRSEE). Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers (IRSSE) and India Railway Store
Service (IRSS)
Group B officers are directly promoted for Group C.
Group C officers are recruited through the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). The 19 Railway
Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have been functioning as prime recruiting agencies for all Zonal Railways.
Production Units and other extra Zonal units of the Indian Railways. Each Railway Recruitment Board is
catering to the recruitment needs of the specified jurisdiction on the Railways. However, there is no
regional or linguistic distinction for recruitment to any post as far as eligibility of the candidates is
concerned. Any citizen of India fulfilling the recruitment criteria can compete for any post without
any regional or linguistic limitations. The Group C posts include assistant station masters, drivers,
motormen, Guards, signal and mechanical inspectors. Here again, staff are divided into technical
and non-technical staff.
etc. is done through direct
recruitment to these categories by a competitive examination conducted by the Railway
Recruitment Boards. These Boards are located at Allahabad, Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Chandigarh,
Jammu, Gorakhpur, Patna, Guwahati, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Thiruvanthapuram,
Bangolore, Secunderabad, Mumbai, Bhopal, Malda, Ranchi, etc. The Boards advertise the
vacancies through a combined advertisement in Newspapers/Employment News and conduct
both written examinations and interviews. The employment notification is also published on the web
sites of the railway boards as well as leading newspapers of different areas.
If number of candidates is large, the candidates who qualify in the preliminary exam are called for
the main written exam, and the merit list is prepared based entirely upon the result of the main exam.
In most categories of jobs, there is no interview after the written examination. For a very few specific
categories there is a viva after the written exam, while for certain other categories there is a skill test.
For categories related to operational safety, there will be a psychological test.
