I’m always excited by the start of anew school year. It provides freshopportunities for our teachers and stu-dents to get going on new learningwhile they make new friends and renewsocial and extracurricular activities.
Amidst the many challenges andchanges for the 2015-16 school year, there will be one constant: a singularfocus on preparing students to be col-lege and career ready. But what doesthat mean to be ready for college, ready for careers?
Certainly, we expect all of our stu-dents to gain solid academic knowl-edge in the various subject areas. Butthere’s more. Students also need tohave the social and emotional compe-tence to be able to apply their knowl-edge, think critically, and communicateand collaborate with others. That’s part
of the real world that awaits them. Wewant our kids to be creative, to showappropriate leadership skills, and todevelop the behaviors of perseverance, responsibility, and adaptability so theyare ready for the inevitable struggles inlife.
Our schools and teachers need fam-ily and community support to deliverthe rigorous, rich, and well-roundededucation our kids deserve. Throughoutthe spring and summer, we’ve beenworking on strategies that will supporteducators as they build relationshipsthat strengthen results for our students.Look for more information on the workof my Parent Advisory Council inSeptember.
During this school year, a number of schools are piloting academic andcareer planning. It’s a bit of a changein the way schools do things, but theprocess is a great opportunity for ouryoung people to really think through
with their parents and teachers whatthey want to do going forward. Theprocess honors all postsecondaryroutes, including military, apprentice-ship, certification, technical college, and university education. It also helpsstudents and their families recognizethat many people move in and out of different routes throughout their lives.
While Wisconsin’s statewide assess-ments, used to measure how well stu-dents are learning, are changing, theywill still have the goals of measuringstudent academic achievement andimproving classroom instruction. Andthat’s really what it’s all about. Movingkids forward, closing achievementgaps, and making sure the next gener-ation is ready and willing to takecharge. We can all make that happenby supporting our hard working stu-dents, educators, and school leaders.
Our plan for every child to gradu-ate ready for college and careers is
called Agenda 2017. I just kgoing to be a great year. Let’s

College life poses unique risks of iden-tity theft for students, with tempting creditcard offers, shared housing, and count-less forms and information that must beprovided. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and ConsumerProtection urges students to study up on
ways to minimize the threat of identitytheft.
“Identity theft can be incredibly dam-aging to young adults' credit and taxrecords, hindering their ability to securestudent loans, buy a vehicle, or apply fora job,” said Frank Frassetto, Administratorfor the Division of Trade and ConsumerProtection. “Students may be unpreparedto protect themselves from a steadystream of credit offers, constant requestsfor personally identifiable information onofficial forms, or a living situation wheremany people may be in and out of yourroom or apartment.”
Here are some helpful tips for studentsto minimize the risk of identity theft:
Don't:• Carry your Social Security card in
your wallet.• Shop online or pay bills on a public
computer, through an unsecured or on an unsecured Wi-Fi networ
• Give solicitors any personcial information or your Social number.
• Post personal identifying tion on social media.
Do:• Keep your dorm room lock
keep sensitive materials out opreferably in a lockbox.
• Request an assigned ID instead if your school uses Social numbers for student ID.
• Ask that your Social Securber not be included on publiclygrades.
• Shred pre-approved credoffers and bills.
• Put mail directly in U.SService mailboxes instead of uncampus mailboxes.
For additional information or complaint, visit the Consumer PrBureau at datcp.wisconsin.gov, Consumer Information Hotline 422-7128 or e-mail datcphotliconsin.gov.
