The OpportunityThe North Carolina chapter of The Nature Conservancy is seeking an individual who possesses the leadership skills and experience to lead a comprehensive development program that secures the significant financial resources from foundations, corporations, and individuals within North Carolina to support conservation goals in the state and around the world.

Role of Director of Philanthropy (DOP)The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for managing a team whose functions include: major gifts, planned giving, principal gifts, donor prospecting and research, and special multi-year fundraising campaigns. The DOP will collaborate with senior staff to establish fundraising goals emanating from the NC Chapter’s strategic plan and will be accountable for these goals. Specific responsibilities for this position include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following areas and duties:

Build and maintain long-term relationships with major donors, foundations and corporations; Management of department’s budget; Responsible for fundraising operating unit with fundraising goals of $5m to $12m annually; Establish and monitor fundraising goals for Associate Directors of Philanthropy and other

fundraising staff; Motivate and coordinate the efforts of a multi-disciplinary staff team and volunteers

(including NC Chapter Board of Trustees) in fundraising, including donor cultivation and solicitation;

Manage development committee of the NC Chapter board and work directly with the campaign co-chairs to successfully launch and complete capital campaigns;

Focus on long-range strategic priorities which will advance the Conservancy’s goals and communicate a broad vision to others;

Serve on the Chapter’s management team; Update and adhere to the Chapter’s strategic plan; Comply with all TNC gift-related policies and procedures to ensure ethical compliance as

defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals;

Work in collaboration with conservation experts, philanthropy staff organization-wide, high level volunteers, and others across a dispersed and complex organization; and

Responsible for learning domestic and global conservation strategies and incorporating these strategies into fundraising results.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 8 years related experience, including experience working at a senior level;

Ability to communicate a compelling and inspired vision and sense of core purpose; Experience in planning, implementing, and managing fundraising strategies and campaigns; Demonstrated ability to consistently close major gifts solicitations and knowledge of evolving

trends; Proven management and administrative skills, as demonstrated by experience in effectively

leading a successful staff and multi-disciplinary team; Excellent communication skills; Advanced knowledge of complex planned and blended giving; Proven ability to negotiate complex, high profile or sensitive agreements; Enjoys challenge of unfamiliar opportunities and willingness to experiment with creative

solutions; Passion for the mission of the organization; and Availability for travel frequently.
