Well Status & Classification
Problem Statement:• Well status and classification are some of the
most widely abused terms in the oil and gas industry
• There are many different definitions being used with very little consistency in terms of terminology or semantic meaning.
• Wells may be grouped in many ways but companies often try to establish a single well class or status
• Consequently, data gets aggregated resulting in complex and confusing codes – there are literally thousands of these

Well Status & Classification
• This results in:- Misunderstanding by users and organizations- Problems with regulatory reporting and
compliance- Poor decisions around property acquisition and
divestiture- Challenges with data mapping- …..
• This has a significant impact on businesses

Establish baseline definitions for well status and classification over the lifecycle of a well that can be used for communication and comparison purposes.Define a baseline symbol set that can be used to represent well classification and status on a map.Add review of Eastern States and Australian States to WIAW Phase I

Well Facets
• Well status and classification are essentially different ways of describing wells so that people can find the right set of wells – these are facets
• A facet comprises clearly defined, independentproperties of an object
• Facets contain values that are mutually exclusive with values in other facets
• Facets may be hierarchical in nature• Sub-facets or qualifiers
• By combining information from many facets, users can group or identify wells for many key functions

Well Facets
• Oil Well• Facet: Fluid Type = Oil
• Producing Oil Well • Facet: Wellbore Status = Producing
• Facet: Fluid Type = Oil
• Operated Producing Oil Well• Facet: Wellbore Status = Producing
• Facet: Fluid Type = Oil
• Facet: Operatorship = Operated
Facets can stand-alone or be grouped

Well Status and Classification
There are two types of facets that we deal with:• State based facets:
- Provide a snap shot of where a well is in business terms- Are a point in time view that will change over the life of a well- Will generally change in a predicable, sequential pattern that can be
tied to the well lifecycle
• Classification based facets:- Provide a method to group wells based on a characteristic of a well,
such as whether it is producing or injecting. - Have values that may change over the life of a well- Have no set pattern to changes- Are not tied to the well lifecycle- Are essentially an attribute of the well

Well Status Facets
Business Life Cycle Phase State: Definition and Values• Business Life Cycle Phase is a collection of
activities and conditions, that are grouped according to business significance, describing where an E&P asset (in this case a well) is at within its progressive history. Phases are related to business significance and are not related to time.

Well Classification Facets
Fluid Type: Definition and Values• Fluid Type is the class of principal fluid in the
wellhead stream. This facet is not intended to be a descriptor of the fluid composition, it is a general classification.

Well Status and Classification
• The first version of the Well Status and Classification project is now complete
• This will be released to PPDM members for review and comment in the next few weeks
• The facet definitions, values and plot symbols will be made available to industry as a whole through the PPDM web site
• Success will depend upon practical implementation –talk to your vendors and get involved
