WHO IS YOUR SPANISH LANGUAGE
COORDINATOR?
Joanna Boca has been the Ministry of National Securitys
Spanish Language Coordinator since 2011. Prior to joining the
Ministry, Ms Boca worked at the
Association of Caribbean States
(ACS) and the Embassy of El Salva-
dor. This afforded her an extensive
understanding of Latin American/
Hispanic culture and to various nu-ances of not just Spanish language,
but also to the inter-relationships of
Latin American culture with our
own culture and history in Trinidad
and Tobago. Ms Boca has a BA.
Linguistics, with minors in Spanish
and Communication Studies. Feel free to contact her for further
details about how you can get involved and stay tuned for fu-
ture activities on the Spanish Language Programme.
THE SPANISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMMEIn accordance with the Governments initiative to adopt Span-ish as a First Foreign language (SAFFL), the Ministry of Na-
tional Security commenced a Spanish Language Programme in
October 2006, with the employment of a Spanish Language
Coordinator (SLC). The initiative mandates that at least 20%
of staff should be trained in Spanish.
The Spanish Language Programme comprises:
Implementation of training courses to facilitate staffs ac-
quisition of increasing levels of Spanish Language profi-
ciency
Installation of bilingual (English-Spanish) signage at vari-
ous offices
Promotion of a Spanish learning environment in the Minis-
try through a Spanish Club and other activities/events.
Arranging translation and interpretation services utilizing
service providers.
