What is Ergonomics?• Wojciech Jastrzebowski (1857), a Polish scholar
was the first to define and use the concept of "ergonomics".
• He described it as: "The Science of Work", deriving the word 'ergonomics' from the Greek words ergon, meaning work, and nomos, meaning principle.
• A more recent definition of ergonomics is:The science concerned with designing safe and comfortable machines for humans.http://www.webopedia.com
Ergonomics• Ergonomic design is the application of body
knowledge to the design of tools, machines and environments for safe effective human use.
• Besides computer hardware, ergonomics also encompasses air quality, room temperature, work environment cleanliness and office furniture.
• All of these elements can and often do affect a person's ability to do their job safely, productively and well.

• Designs that consider human abilities often make human work more:– productive– efficient– reliable– safe
Health Concerns• Prolonged computer use can cause a number of
health problems, ranging from minor eyestrain too debilitating, chronic nerve and tendon damage and back pain that can destroy a career.
• The two leading categories of computer-related health risks are:
• Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)• Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD), also called
Repetitive Strain/Stress Injury (RSI)
