FOCUS ON WORSHIP

EPIPHANY: Epiphany is Greek for manifestation or appearance. The

Epiphany of Our Lord is the January 6 festival celebrating the manifestation of

Christ to the world, recalling the visit of the magi The gift of gold was valuable;

fit for a king. Frankincense was a type of incense used in Worship, symbolizing

prayers rising to God. Myrrh was a fragrant resin used in oil for anointing and to

prepare a body for burial.

EPIPHANY SEASON: The Epiphany Season is the final part of the Christmas

cycle of the Church year, extending from the Epiphany of Our Lord on January 6

to the Transfiguration of Our Lord, the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. The

Epiphany season serves the Church year by bridging Christ’s incarnation and

His passion. It celebrates the revelations of Jesus as the Christ, the Savior of the

world, particularly in the miracles He performs. The number of Sundays within

the Epiphany season is determined by the date set for Easter.

THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD: The Festival of the Baptism of Our Lord

occurs on the first Sunday after the Epiphany. This year it’s on January 11.

On this Sunday, the Church recalls Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan by John

the Baptist, and we have an opportunity to affirm our own baptisms.

Greetings of the new world of 2015! This

is the year we discover all sorts of things:

what pieces can a larger handbell choir

ring? What acapella music can our choir

sing? What wonders are in store for us at our May annual musicians’ concert?

What new musician might walk through our doors and be lured by the warm

greeting received? What crazy music will the crazy Russian pianist play on 3 crazy

days in September?

We are very lucky to have such fine instrumentalists who are able to accompany

our Sunday services. Our newest musician is violinist Marian Kshetrapal. Please

take a moment to thank Marian for her contribution to our worship.

At the core of our efforts, how can we make our music more beautiful and more

useful to the members of our church? Thank you for your constant support and

love while we prepare and present our music.

Don’t miss this:

SLLC HOSTS: Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. The Virginia Benefit Chorale, under the direction of Steve Davis, will perform a

concert for the benefit of St. Luke. The Chorale was founded by Steve Davis in

order to give concerts solely for the purpose of raising money for charities and

humanitarian causes. This choir of about 15 members has rehearsed at St. Luke

for 10 years and periodically performs here in thanks and so that our church’s

work may benefit from their artistry.

The St. Luke Messenger

These are other concerts at St. Luke, coming up in January:

Saturday, January 10, 7:00 p.m. The ECKHART ENSEMBLE was formed and is conducted by Gus Highstein, principal oboeist with the Richmond Symphony. His group, with special guest French flutist Nicolas Duchamp, will perform Bach’s Cantata 82 "Ich habe genug.” Bach composed this solo cantata for bass (the title “I Have Enough” or “I am Content” refers to the Christian’s joyful longing for the release of death) in Leipzig in 1727 for the Feast of the Purification of Mary. In addition, the group will perform Bach’s Orchestral Suite 2 and a suite of Italian Renaissance Dances (c.1300-1610). Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors & students; children under 12 are free. Sunday, January 11, 3:00 p.m. New York City Opera baritone James Taylor and pianist Charles Staples team up to tackle Franz Schubert's epic song cycle, Winterreise, using Grammy winner Glen Roven's excellent singable English translation. The singer who performed these songs repeatedly with Schubert called them “truly divine inspirations, the utterance of a musical clairvoyance.” This is a piece of music that you must experience at least once in your life! A freewill offering will be received.

Mid-week Bible Study Class Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study Class resumes on Wednesday, January 7th at 10:30am. His class meets every Wednesday morning. Please consider joining us for a weekly discussion on scripture. Pastor Fred uses a variety of study methods as we delve into the text of the bible. How do the words speak to us today? How can we apply them to our daily lives? You don’t even need to bring a Bible if you don’t want to, we have plenty at church. Pastor Fred invites you to come and discover new insights into the Bible with him and the rest of the class.

We would like to thank everyone for making our November and December project of bath towels and laundry detergent a big success. Please watch for more information as we decide what our January giving project will be. Your donations may be brought to the church anytime and placed in the Narthex. Thank you, Stephen Ministry Team

The Word in Season

The new January - March 2015 “Word In Season” Devotional Booklet is now available in the church narthex.

Don’t forget to pick up your copy.

The 2015 Flower Chart is up in the fellowship hall.

Won’t you consider signing up to provide Sunday altar flow-ers? Altar flowers may be dedi-cated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a special person or special event. More than one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. Arrangements cost $27.00 each and are delivered to the church. You will be billed directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers. The flowers are yours to take home after Worship that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please contact the church office or Jean Stewart if you have questions. Thank you.
