FOCUS ON WORSHIP
Season after Pentecost / Ordinary Time: The Season after Pentecost constitutes the second half of the
Church year and makes up the longest portion of it. This season follows the Easter season and the feasts of
Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. This season ends on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. It
may extend over a period of twenty-eight Sundays. The season’s length is determined by the date set for
Easter. It mainly concerns Christ's preaching and ministry, with many of his parables read as the Gospel
readings. This is the Time of the Church–the time we focus on growing together in the life of the Holy
Trinity. During the Sundays after Pentecost we decorate the church with the color green which is the color
for this season. Green is the color of growing plants and life. As growing plants need water and nourishment,
so we can only grow by living in our Baptisms and receiving the Lord’s Word and Sacraments. In the Time
of the Church, we focus on the life of Christ in His Church as He guides us to grow in “faith toward God and
in fervent love toward one another.” The appointed Gospels for the Sundays after Pentecost are full of Jesus’ teachings, such as His parable, words of wisdom, and debates with the Pharisees. We also hear the Word of
the Old Testament prophets, who are inspired by the Spirit to foretell Jesus’ coming, as the word of the
apostles, sent forth by Jesus to preach in the power of the Spirit. The Time of the Church is a time to grow
in godly knowledge. Through His Word, Jesus is still making disciples of all those who will follow Him.

A Note from Pastor Fred
91
According to a recent article in Time Magazine, the above number is the amount
of deaths that happened every day during the month of May from drug overdose.
Further, those deaths are not just from street market drugs but from the growing
number of prescription drugs that are becoming more liberally prescribed for pain
relief. Ohio has announced that they are in a state of emergency and even a small
town in New Hampshire is rife with overdose victims.
So, what is happening, why the need to turn prescription drugs into recreational
drugs? There is no question that all of these drugs promise a 'high', a feeling of
euphoria, an escape into another world, but an escape from what?
I suppose my parents like all parents hoped for a better life for me and my siblings,
and to be sure, that actually happened. Every generation of parents think the same
way it seems. But the question arises, how much better does it have to be? Or said
in another way, what is the level of happiness that needs to be achieved in life?
Jesus said, 'I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly’. We
have all heard those words before, but have we really dug deep into those words?
Or have they become words that merely sound soothing but without practical
application?
As a community in Christ, we need to start talking.
In Peace,
Pastor Fred

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, local Lutheran Churches, ELCA and Missouri Synod, are sponsoring a blood drive throughout the year, to service the Richmond area.
Our date to host is July 23, 2017. The Blood Mobile will be in the parking lot. For those who have given blood before, you know what an easy procedure it is. I hope that you will be an advocate for those who have thought about it before but have yet to participate. A sign-up sheet is in the Narthex.

Confirmation of Jade Groener
Congratulations to Jade Groener who was confirmed in the faith on June 4, 2017 at the 10:00am Worship Service.
The Rite of Confirmation marks “the completion of the congregation’s program of confirmation ministry, a period of
instruction in the Christian faith as confessed in the teachings of the Lutheran Church. Those who have completed
this program were made members of the Church in baptism. Confirmation includes a public progression of the faith
into which the candidates were baptized, thus underscoring God’s action in Baptism.”

“God’s Work, Our Hand’s”
Project for 2017
On Pentecost, we celebrated the Holy Spirit as the power of God among
us that heals, forgives, inspires, and unites us for witness in the world.
Mark 16:15 tells us “Go into all the world and tell the Good news to everyone.”
This year we are once again uniting with “Rise Against Hunger” (formerly Stop Hunger Now)
to make meals for the hungry throughout the world. In order to make the 13,000 meals, we need to
raise at least $3,500.00 by September 9th – our work day!
As we go into the world and care for those who do not have their “daily bread” we also tell the
wonderful love and life in Jesus Christ. We are fulfilling Jesus command to go into all the world
and tell the Good News of Jesus Christ to everyone!
We began on June 4th and continuing throughout the summer months, we ask you donate to our
“Rise Against Hunger” project with your donation. Please write “ Rise Against Hunger” on the
memo line of your check.
Check the poster in the narthex to see how far we are in reaching our goal!
We’re doing pretty good so far but we have a ways to go. You can help!

Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the
Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are
used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God
and those who attend Worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of
God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of”
a special person, anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special
event. More than one person may find a certain date important so
flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday
service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly
from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to
the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service that
Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or home-
bound members. Please return the container the flowers are in to the
church at your convenience.
You may sign up on the flower chart that is located in the fellowship
hall. Please contact Tammy in the church office or Jean Stewart if
you have any questions. Thank you.
The 2017 Flower Chart is up in the fellowship hall.
The 2017 Flower Calendar is now up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. Two arrangements can be used on each Sunday. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected] or Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

The August 2017 Newsletter Deadline is July 20th. Please call in or e-mail in your submissions with August meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. We need to add your events to the church calendar as well. Thank you. 804-272-0486, [email protected]
Would you like to be part of our Worship Service?
Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Crucifers, Ushers, and Assisting Ministers. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services, Altar Bread bakers, Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members, Musicians and many other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.
If you are interested in serving and would like more information about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship Ministry, we would love to hear from you.
Please contact Pastor Fred Marcoux or Vince Reedinger for more information about Worship. Please contact Rich Barnett, our Director of Music for any information about our Music
Bring your family and friends to
Church. Everyone is most welcome
at St. Luke. Please have them fill
out a Visitor Card (located in each
pew rack or from any usher) and
return it in the offering plate.
If they would like more information about our
church, I will be glad to answer any questions they
might have about St. Luke, including church
membership. They can also speak with a member of
our Evangelism committee or call the church office
at 804-272-0486, for more information.
In Peace,
Pastor Fred Marcoux
