CHRIST THE KING: This is the last festival Sunday of the Church year. It falls on November 25th

this year. This festival celebrates the kingly rule of Christ, who was enthroned upon the cross and

A MESSAGE FROM

PASTOR FRED

First Encounter

It happened when I was nineteen years old on a summer job. I was asked to bring a

custom made chair to a home. I rang the doorbell and as it opened I was greeted by a

delightful woman with a gracious smile asking me to come right in. As she walked in

it was clear that she was disabled or had hurt herself from the way she walked.

At nineteen years old I had yet to learn that some questions are better left unsaid.

Nevertheless I asked, “Are you ok?” She smiled and said “Yes I am. I walk this way

because of something that happened many years ago.” She invited me to sit and have

coffee and then it began: an unsolicited story of her life. Nazi concentration camp,

Nazi doctors using her for experimental surgery, her survival to the end of the war

and her migration to the United States.

She showed me pictures of her three young children and then pointed to the big side

by side refrigerator noting that her children would never have the hunger that she

experienced in the concentration camp. There was a silent pause and then to my

surprise took my hand and said, “Are you a Christian?” I nodded in the affirmative.

And then she asked, “You wouldn't hurt my children just because they are Jewish

would you?”

The next day her husband called to apologize for what he felt must have been for me

a very awkward situation. It seems that like the sailor in the Rhyme of the Ancient

Mariner she was condemned to telling her story over and over to whoever would

listen, searching for goodness in the world.

The recent massacre at Tree of Life in Pittsburgh immediately brought me back to that

first living encounter with antisemitism and the ongoing struggle for many Jews to

search for goodness in the world. And for those who died, may they be greeted by the

loving gracious arms of the God of Abraham, Joseph and Jacob to experience the

goodness that was robbed from them in their final moments in this world.

In Peace,

Pastor Fred

Dear Good People of St Luke Lutheran Church: It has been a busy Fall so far and we just got through Halloween! Please consider the following musical activities – you may find something that interests you or a friend – all are welcome to participate in St. Luke Music Ministry! Sunday, November 11 – Special Music to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. At the conclusion of the service we will sing the military service anthems. Sunday, November 11 – A rehearsal for students in Pre-K – 12th grade for our Children’s Christmas Pageant. The pageant will feature costumed characters and carols telling the story of the Nativity. The rehearsal will be held after the service and lunch will be provided. Sunday, December 9 – St. Luke Handbell Choir, directed by Joe Bucher, will play the Prelude. This will be a challenge for the choir due to the absence of Marty Witthoefft, the anchor of the big bells, who will be in Texas awaiting the birth of his first grandchild. Sunday, December 16 - Children’s Christmas Pageant which will be held during the service. Sunday, December 23 – Adult Christmas Cantata which will be held during the service. Instrumentalists are always welcome to play, especially around the holidays. Please blow your horn, strum your guitar or bang a drum (bagpipes may be asked to play outside…) Please let me know if you are interested in participating in any of these activities. I am very happy and fortunate to serve St. Luke Lutheran Church and thank you for your support! Peace, Richard Barnett Director of Music St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church

The Book of Remembrance is available in the narthex.

You may write as many names in it as you desire.

Don’t be late for church!

back one hour in the fall. See you on Sunday!

ALL SAINTS NAME CARDS

Worship Service Assistants

Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers.

We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services and communion, Altar Bread Bakers and other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.

In our music department, we have Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members and all sorts of Musicians. We are so thankful to have these folks assist us every week but we can always use more help.

If you are interested in serving the Lord at our church and would like more info about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship and Music Ministry, we would love to hear from you.

Please contact the following people for more information about Worship: Pastor Fred Marcoux, [email protected] Vince Reedinger, Worship/Music chair, [email protected]

For more information about our chancel choir, handbell choir or the music department, please email Richard Barnett, our Director of Music at [email protected].

Do you have an important meeting or an event coming up?

If you would like an announcement in the weekly bulletin, please email the church office at [email protected] or call 804-272-0486 before 12:00pm on Wednesdays with your dates and times.

The Church Scheduling Calendar is located in the office. It has all planned and confirmed activities listed if you’d like to check to see if your date and time is open or has any conflicts. Thank you for helping us keep the St. Luke Church Event Calendar up to date.

Do you have something for the next Church Newsletter?

The St. Luke Messenger goes to press on the 23rd of each month. Because of this, all information needs to be in the church office by the 20th of the month. This will help us in getting an accurate newsletter out in a timely manner.

Please call in or e-mail in your event and meeting submissions with all meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. We need to add your events to the church calendar as well. The December 2018 Newsletter Deadline is November 20th.

Thank you. Tammy 804-272-0486 X1, [email protected]

SANCTUARY FLOWERS

Would you like to place Flowers

on the Altar on Sunday?

If so, please sign up on the

Flower Chart in the Fellowship Hall.

Questions?

Please see the information below

or call the Office at 804-272-0486.

Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used

to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a

special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may find a

certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed

directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home

after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the

container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience. You may sign up on the chart located in the fellowship hall.

The Flower Chart Calendar

The Flower Calendar is hanging in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone that signed up for our open Altar Flowers dates. We appreciate it.

We now have at least one arrangement of flowers for every Sunday for the rest of the year.

Please remember, Altar Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

We love when we have two arrangements for Sunday morning so please feel free to check out the chart!

If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. The Altar Flower Chart

is hanging in the fellowship hall near the kitchen.

Demonstrate your thankfulness this season

Now, with fall and harvest time drawing near, people start to reflect upon the things they are thankful for

and how they can show their gratitude by supporting others. During this time, St. Luke Lutheran Church

anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual

and family in the congregation that we are able to carry on our ministries now and throughout the year.

One way Thrivent members who are eligible to participate in the Thrivent Choice® Program can do this is

by directing Choice Dollars® to their churches. The Choice Dollars grant funds your church receives will help

you continue to minister to others, strengthen communities and change lives. The Thrivent Choice (SM)

program lets members recommend where some of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' charitable outreach

funds go by directing Choice Dollars (SM). The amount of Choice Dollars designated to you depends on the

type of Thrivent Insurance products you have that qualify.

If you need a convenient way to make recurring contributions or plan to make an additional gift before the

end of the year, we encourage you to check out Thrivent’s Choice Dollars program. Do you need additional

information? Log in to Thrivent’s website, www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice to find out more. Once there, you

can choose how to direct Thrivent Choice Dollars to send them to a charity of your choice. When doing so we

ask that you consider designating St Luke Lutheran Church.

Thank you for your generosity and support.
