FOCUS ON WORSHIP
THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD: This festival of the church occurs on the Sunday prior to Ash
Wednesday. The Lord’s Transfiguration celebrates that incident in Christ’s life when His divinity shone through
His humanity. Traditionally, it occurred on Mt. Tabor and was intended to prepare the disciples for Christ’s
passion and death on the cross. The celebration of Christ’s Transfiguration acts as a bridge into Lent by further
identifying who Jesus is and by anticipating the events in Jerusalem.
SHROVE TUESDAY: This day is observed as a day of merriment and feasting. It immediately precedes the
beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving, when the
faithful confessed their sins to the local priest and received forgiveness before the Lenten season began. Long
ago this day was for feasting and fun. During Lent people fasted from rich foods such as eggs and butter which
were forbidden. One way of using them up would be to make pancakes.
ASH WEDNESDAY: Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a day of special devotion, and the most solemn
day of the Church year. The name “Ash Wednesday” comes from the practice of imposing ashes on the
foreheads of penitents during the Ash Wednesday liturgy. The mood of the Ash Wednesday liturgy is penitence
and reflection on the quality of one’s faith and life. On Ash Wednesday we begin our Lenten discipline, which
by its focus on the mystery of redemption, strengthens worshipers in the gift of our Baptism.

A MESSAGE FROM
PASTOR FRED
Jesus said, 'I AM...'
Karoline Lewis, professor of homiletics writes: 'Jesus as the one-and-only God, ...
is the distinctive claim of Christianity. Yet in today's world what's said and
believed about Jesus has the tendency to divide Jesus' humanity from Jesus'
divinity.
Our Christologies seem comfortable with choosing one or the other, depending
on whom we need Jesus to be in a certain time or place - or, for a certain purpose.
What difference does this make? Well, when we collapse Jesus' humanity into
Jesus' divinity, it gets harder to imagine the purpose and pathos of the cross. After
all, if that was God nailed to a tree, to what extent was that true suffering? And
when we minimize Jesus' divinity, it becomes easy to reduce Jesus to an above
average teacher, miracle worker, and advocate of the poor.'
This year during our Wednesday Lenten worship we will look into the five great
I AM statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John and ask what is being humanly
said and what is being divinely said.
Or, is it impossible to separate them?
In Peace,
Pastor Fred

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study
Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am.
Please join us for a weekly study and discussion on scripture. Pastor Fred uses a variety of study methods as we delve into the text of the bible. How do the words speak to us today? How can we apply them to our daily lives? Pastor Fred invites you to come and discover new insights
into the Bible with him and the rest of the class. You don’t even need to bring a Bible if you don’t want to, we have plenty at church. We hope to see you on Wednesday morning for Bible Study!
No Bible Study Class on February 14

The adult, children and handbell choristers; soloists; and musicians of St. Luke
Music Ministry had a busy 2017 and anticipate many good things to come as
we look ahead to 2018. So please consider these fun activities:
JOIN OUR CHOIR! Although our adult choir has 19 members, there is
always room for more! The choir normally rehearses on Thursday evening
from 7:30pm – 9:00pm but during Lent the rehearsals switch to Wednesday
evenings.
SEND YOUR KIDS TO CAMP! This past July we held our first Summer
Music Camp. Twenty-one youth from kindergarten to eighth grade attended
the five-day camp. Many St. Luke members jumped in the boat and pulled
on the oars to sail the campers to a successful performance of “Malice in the
Palace,” the featured musical theater production of the camp. Plans are
underway for this year’s FREE Summer Music Camp for children in grades
K – 8 which will be held:
July 16 – 20, 2018.
At the SECOND ANNUAL Summer Music Camp we will rehearse from
9:00am – 3:00pm each day and present the biblically-based musical on Friday,
July 20th at 6:30pm:
“Once Upon a Parable”
This show a 45 minute musical which features these stories of Jesus: the wise
man and the foolish man, the good Samaritan, the mustard seed, the parable
of the vineyard, and the prodigal son, which is the centerpiece of the musical.
The musical concludes with a dramatic presentation of the crucifixion and the
resurrection.
ATTEND A CONCERT! St. Luke’s sanctuary serves as a wonderful recital
hall for many musical concerts throughout the year. Tammy Hammond , our
church administrator dutifully updates the concert/recital schedule regularly. Peace, Richard Barnett Director of Music
Musical meanderings….

Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday
Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used to beautify
our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend
Worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In
Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a special person,
an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one
person may find a certain date important so flowers may be given in more
than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service,
arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly from Coleman
Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers
are yours to take home after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they
be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the container
the flowers are in to the church at your convenience.
You may sign up on the flower chart that is located in the fellowship hall.
Please contact Tammy in the church office or Jean Stewart if you have any
questions. Thank you.
The 2018 Flower Chart is up in the fellowship hall.
The 2018 Flower Calendar is now up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the church office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

if local schools are closed because of bad weather, St. Luke
