Headteachers
welcome: Dear Crest family,
I hope you and your families are well
and staying safe. By the time you read
this it will have been 26 school days
missed. For me it feels like 126 days!
Ramadan Mubarak (a little late I
know) to my Muslim families and
teachers. Many of you know that I
always fast with my students and I
have been doing well so far...it is so
hard, but I will keep it up!
The need for gratitude feels even
more important now. So often we
complain about school, but we should
be grateful to belong to such a caring
school community, a place where we
spend so much quality time with our
friends and teachers. School is not
just about learning; school is the place
where we learn, not just about books
or the world but about ourselves and
each other. School is a special place
and we are all incredibly lucky to
belong to the Crest Academy family.
There has been lots of speculation in
the media about when schools will re-
open to all students. As soon as I
know the exact dates for this, I will
contact all students and their families
and inform you all about the next
steps.
Be grateful for school, a place that
you often complain about, but I am
sure you now miss!
We will all be back at school and
together again and although the
world will have changed, your school
will still be here for you.
Take care... and do your work!
Ms. Fernandes

Functional Literacy:
Each week students at The Crest Academy have been sent a lesson on how to improve their Literacy from home. Last
week students learnt how to compose a professional email. Now that all students have a Crest Academy email, they
were able to get straight to this task. Thank you for all the lovely emails I received.
Accelerated Reader
Our Accelerated Reader competitions are ongoing, and students are working hard to try and win one of the Amazon
vouchers up for grabs.
For our quizzes competition, this week's top 3 are: Sara H in Year 7 with 36 quizzes, racing from third place last week;
Haider A in Year 7 with 29 quizzes and Dhruvi S in Year 9 with 26 quizzes. Remember: students must have an 85%
average to qualify and must be quizzing on books at or above their ZPD level.
For our highest word count competition, this week's top three is only a little different from last week: we have Sabrina
A in Year 8 now in first place with 886,687 words; Abeera M in Year 7 now in second place with 805,768 words; and
Nawal D in Year 7 holding steady in third place with 540,893 words. Competitions end on 22 May 2020.
Literacy at Home
Please see information below about ways to help your child engage in reading at home. There are a variety of
websites to access as well as writing competitions.
All students should be reading at least 30 minutes a day to ensure their reading level is improving. Being at home is a
great opportunity to ensure your child is reading more than this to accelerate progress. Please access our reading list
on our Literacy page if you would like more guidance as to what your child should be reading.

Healthy Eating Tops Tips During Lockdown
You do not need to eat a special diet as all foods provide some goodness.
Three of the nutrients that help to support your immune system include vitamin A (sweet
potato & spinach), vitamin C (berries, tomatoes & peppers) & zinc (meat, shellfish, dairy &
bread).
Consume Oily fish -Oily fish is one of the few rich sources of vitamin D in the diet
If we are staying at home all the time, we may not be getting as much sun exposure, which is
our main source of vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for bone health and to support the
immune system.
Be sure to hydrate Drinking an adequate amount of fluid is essential for you to feel and
function at your best.
This week the P.E department have set the house competition.
