Headteachers

welcome: Dear Crest family,

I hope you and your families are well

and staying safe. By the time you read

this it will have been 26 school days

missed. For me it feels like 126 days!

Ramadan Mubarak (a little late I

know) to my Muslim families and

teachers. Many of you know that I

always fast with my students and I

have been doing well so far...it is so

hard, but I will keep it up!

The need for gratitude feels even

more important now. So often we

complain about school, but we should

be grateful to belong to such a caring

school community, a place where we

spend so much quality time with our

friends and teachers. School is not

just about learning; school is the place

where we learn, not just about books

or the world but about ourselves and

each other. School is a special place

and we are all incredibly lucky to

belong to the Crest Academy family.

There has been lots of speculation in

the media about when schools will re-

open to all students. As soon as I

know the exact dates for this, I will

contact all students and their families

and inform you all about the next

steps.

Be grateful for school, a place that

you often complain about, but I am

sure you now miss!

We will all be back at school and

together again and although the

world will have changed, your school

will still be here for you.

Take care... and do your work!

Ms. Fernandes

1. You are running in a street marathon and you overtake the

person in last place, what position are you now in?

2. Everything Mr Red owns is red, he lives in a red bungalow

and his chairs are red, his tables are red. His ceiling, walls and

floor are all red. All his clothes are red, his shoes are red, even

his carpet, television and phone are red. What colour are his

stairs?

3. You have a barrel, filled to the top with water, which weighs

150Kg. What can you put in the barrel to make it lighter?

Functional Literacy:

Each week students at The Crest Academy have been sent a lesson on how to improve their Literacy from home. Last

week students learnt how to compose a professional email. Now that all students have a Crest Academy email, they

were able to get straight to this task. Thank you for all the lovely emails I received.

Accelerated Reader

Our Accelerated Reader competitions are ongoing, and students are working hard to try and win one of the Amazon

vouchers up for grabs.

For our quizzes competition, this week's top 3 are: Sara H in Year 7 with 36 quizzes, racing from third place last week;

Haider A in Year 7 with 29 quizzes and Dhruvi S in Year 9 with 26 quizzes. Remember: students must have an 85%

average to qualify and must be quizzing on books at or above their ZPD level.

For our highest word count competition, this week's top three is only a little different from last week: we have Sabrina

A in Year 8 now in first place with 886,687 words; Abeera M in Year 7 now in second place with 805,768 words; and

Nawal D in Year 7 holding steady in third place with 540,893 words. Competitions end on 22 May 2020.

Literacy at Home

Please see information below about ways to help your child engage in reading at home. There are a variety of

websites to access as well as writing competitions.

All students should be reading at least 30 minutes a day to ensure their reading level is improving. Being at home is a

great opportunity to ensure your child is reading more than this to accelerate progress. Please access our reading list

on our Literacy page if you would like more guidance as to what your child should be reading.

Answers are located at the end of the newsletter

Healthy Eating Tops Tips During Lockdown

You do not need to eat a special diet as all foods provide some goodness.

Three of the nutrients that help to support your immune system include vitamin A (sweet

potato & spinach), vitamin C (berries, tomatoes & peppers) & zinc (meat, shellfish, dairy &

bread).

Consume Oily fish -Oily fish is one of the few rich sources of vitamin D in the diet

If we are staying at home all the time, we may not be getting as much sun exposure, which is

our main source of vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for bone health and to support the

immune system.

Be sure to hydrate Drinking an adequate amount of fluid is essential for you to feel and

function at your best.

This week the P.E department have set the house competition.

Staff, pupils and parents I hope you have your trainers ready!

Step 1: Download a free steps or pedometer app (examples on

the next slide)

Step 2: Select one day to record your steps. (any time between

the 6th -13th May, late entries will not be counted)

Step 3: Take a screen shot of your total number of steps and

upload this on to Show my homework to your PE teacher ONLY.

Step 4: The PE team will then total the scores and decide a

winner.

Step 5: The winner will gain a prize and points towards their

house.

Step 6: Each year group will compete against each other.

GOOD LUCK AND KEEP SAFE!

We hope you are all managing to stay fit and healthy by engaging in

your daily exercise, either alone or with people you live with. It is

also important to eat as well as you can and sleep well. Remember

to keep in touch with your friends too and help around the house.

Year 12 – We are still waiting to hear when the Academy will be able

to reopen. In the meantime, it is important that you do your best to

keep up with the work set by your teachers. Please also make sure

you are set up on Unifrog, so staff can write your subject references

and remember to use Unifrog to aid your research for degrees and

apprenticeships.

Form Code, please see the post on SMHW. Any other problems

please contact me.

Year 13 - Please make sure that you are ready for your chosen

university/ degree apprenticeships, by researching content for Year

topics and listen to podcasts and videos. Year 13 BTEC students, you
