Issue No. 32 9 November 2018

Our thoughts and prayers remain with our Year 12 students as they complete their final examinations. The completion of Secondary School marks the end of a significant phase of life as students move into either the workforce or tertiary education (or somewhere in between). Leaving the close community of St Paul’s can be difficult for some students, others, however, are keen to face the world. We are certainly proud of each and every one of our graduates and sincerely pray for God’s blessing on their lives as they commence this wonderful new adventure.

This time of year is also one of planning for next year. We have appointed a number of new staff who will be commencing with us next year:

• Emma Cullen has been appointed for a 12-month positionin the Junior School for 2019. Emma is an ex-student of theschool and has been working with us over the past few yearsin OOSH whilst completing her Education degree. I haveconfidence that she will be a great addition to our staff.

How Do You Use Your Time?During this week, a class were reflecting on the works of Michelangelo. One student asked the teacher how Michelangelo could have enough time in his week to create so many amazing works!

A wonderful discussion then began on how the students use their time. The teacher challenged the class to consider having a week without screen time. Some declared that it was easy as they are not allowed to have screen time during the week. Others seemed a little concerned if they could make it through the week.

I have to say I was impressed to hear that Year 2 students were having such a conversation at their young age. Perhaps the most important aspect of this was their consideration of all the amazing things they could do or create without screens – or perhaps the games they could play outside. Technology is a great tool, however let’s have lots of good conversations with children about how we use our time.

MiniLitCongratulations to the Year 1 and 2 students who completed the MiniLit Programme.

The students worked very hard to complete the program and were presented with their certificates at the Junior School Assembly on Monday morning. Year 5 Father and Son CampIt was a real pleasure to attend the Year 5 Father and Son Camp held overnight on Friday, 26th October at the Junior School.

On arrival, I was greeted by happy fathers and sons enjoying a game of touch football, gaga ball or just relaxing in the cool of the afternoon. Many tents (some new out of their wrapping!) had been erected on what is normally the Primary grassed play area. Dinner followed, where the boys served their fathers. A highlight of the camp was listening to past Head of Junior School, Mr Kleinveldt who talked about the importance of spending time together and communication.

Mr Ongley was able to make a presentation to Mr Kleinveldt to acknowledge his support of the camp over the years since its inception 20 years ago. The St Paul’s RFS Cadets were able to assist on the evening with serving food, tidying up and supervising the small cooking fire nearby. In all, it was an amazing, relaxed time for all the dads and boys to enjoy each other’s company. My thanks to Mr Ongley who ably planned and facilitated the event.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Mathematics Results

Each year our students (Years 3-6) are invited to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), in the subject areas of Science, English and Mathematics.

ICAS tests are developed annually for each subject, in each year level by a team of subject matter experts. The Mathematics results have arrived and it is with great pleasure that I announce some of the solid results that our students have achieved.
