Welcome to the final edition of Revelations for the year – and what a year it has been. From fires, droughts, floods and pandemic; together we have been on a journey that none of us were expecting. In spite of all that has occurred throughout the year, we have managed to navigate each difficulty and obstacle by working together as a community.

I am so encouraged that in this last part of the year we are able to welcome parents and families back on site to attend the numerous events and ceremonies that are planned. It was lovely to attend the Pre-Kindergarten assembly and see the incredible learning that has taken place throughout the year. It was also excellent to graduate Year 12 in the presence of their families and the entire Secondary School and to enjoy a nearly normal Valedictory Dinner. Year 10 were also able to have their formal.

In the final week of school we have Year 6 Graduation, Christmas Chapel, Junior School Presentation Assembly and Secondary School Presentation Assembly. Each of these events are being held outside on the Central Playing Fields near the Secondary School Library. If you are attending the upcoming Junior School Presentation Assembly and Secondary School Presentation Assembly these events you will need to register and observe all the usual COVID-safe requirements. Hidden in Plain Sight

Wow! Channel 7 reported over the weekend that a long-lost painting by Frederick McCubbin (ironically named Found) has been found after being lost for over a century! A curator at the National Gallery of Victoria discovered Found, hidden underneath the famous McCubbin piece The Pioneer, after a little inspection of a lump in the painting. It turns out that the artist painted The Pioneer over Found, revealed by an x-ray of the painting. What was lost has now been Found, hidden in plain sight for more than 100 years, right in front of the thousands upon thousands of eyes that have inspected the artwork from the time it was created.

Amazing. Hidden in plain sight. I’ve been struck by that idea this Christmas. So often we can glaze over the story and get caught up with all the gloss and glimmer and ‘festive season’ that surrounds the Incarnation, the birth of Jesus, God become human.

These words from John’s gospel:

The Word became flesh – God became human. But notice v10, though he (Jesus) was in the world, the world didn’t recognise him. Somewhat like the painting Found, hidden in plain sight. How often is that the case for me, and maybe you, in the hustle and bustle and busy of holiday Christmas festivities?

And yet, festive is what we ought to be at this time of year! Although this year has been odd for many reasons, and strange and difficult for many, in a year of social-distancing, Christmas reminds us that…

God.

Came.

Near. And that’s a wonderful thing to celebrate, be thankful for, and look into deeply again.

Have a wonderful Christmas. Be safe. Let’s go again next year and together see the wonderful things God is doing in and around our school community, and all the good that can come from people willing to trust him through things like a global pandemic.

God bless.

Matt Palmer Chaplain

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. ( John 1:9-14)

The Importance of Connection

As I reflect on the year that has been, the overriding theme that comes through to me is that of the importance of connection. During remote learning, it became obvious that many craved the face to face connection that we are used to each day here in the Junior School. I am well aware of the challenges this year has brought for many families - the sense of separation families have experienced while being unable to see extended family members, particularly grandparents, and the need for many parents to work from home and find new ways to communicate and interact.

Connection and interaction with others is an important aspect of being human. In fact, I think we are designed for this function. God also desires connection with us too! Not for his benefit, but for ours. At Christmas, we are reminded of God’s gift to the world - his son, Jesus. Ultimately, Jesus being born as a baby and then growing up as a man to die on a cross means that we can have connection with God forever - eternal life.

May I take this opportunity once again to thank our community for working together through this difficult year and also to pray that each would have a blessed Christmas and New Year!

Learning and Teaching in 2020

Thank you for your engagement with Learning and Teaching at St Paul's in 2020.In my many years working in the field of education I have never experienced a year like 2020. The implications of a global pandemic on learning and teaching practice around the world has been profound. It has been challenging for all to adjust, sometimes daily, to the changes of this year, but feedback from students and parents regarding all the many adjustments St Paul’s has made was extremely positive. I would like to thank students and families for the support and helpful feedback received during the year. I also express sincere and deep thanks to our outstanding staff for their diligence and professionalism in dealing with the uncertainty that the year has brought. Their focus has continued to be supporting students in learning.

University Offers

Congratulations to students who have received an early university offer! More than half of the outgoing Year 12 students have already received offers from universities as a result of completing the School Recommendation Scheme (SRS) or other early applications.

All Year 12 students who are keen to study at university are encouraged to accept early offers and then change their university preferences to remove the offer place from their list to enable new offers to be made if this is something they wish to pursue. This advice assumes that students will wish to have a choice of courses to enrol in. In recent years, students who follow this process find that they may have a multitude of choices. Some students wish to study at university but have a ‘gap’ year. For students who wish to do this we recommend they accept an offer and then ‘defer’ the place until the following year. This ensures peace of mind and it also guards against future changes in offer requirements effecting the place. Further information regarding university offers may be found on the UAC website.

The upcoming UAC offer rounds of greatest significance to St Paul’s students are:

• Thursday, 10th December: December round 1 offers

• Wednesday, 23rd December: December round 2 offers: based on HSC ATARs

• Saturday, 9th January: January round 1 offers: based on IB results and HSC ATARs

• Thursday, 21st January: January round 2 offers based on IB results and HSC ATARs

Preferences must be changed at least four days before each offer round to be considered. A full list of UAC key dates may be found here.

I wish all members of the St Paul’s community a blessed and restful Christmas break!

Congtratulations to our Middle Years Prefects

Over the course of this term, our Middle Years prefects have stepped-up to the mark after having a relatively quiet year due to the many events that were not able to be hosted, due to COVID-19. Firstly, they completed a highly successful awareness raising week in support of The Haven, a local women's shelter, as part of our ongoing involvement with the Walk the Talk programme. Then in the last fortnight, our Middle Years leaders shone brightly in their role as assistants at the Year 7 Orientation Programme. Our leaders play a vital role in helping new students navigate their way around the school, helping teachers with lessons, and helping the incoming Year 7 students make connections with existing students from the Junior School. They even ended the orientation getting enthusiastically involved in the interhouse sports competition.

Recently, the Middle Years prefects worked alongside the senior prefects and our staff on the Year 12 Valedictory Assembly. This was a wonderful ceremony held outdoors for the first time, thereby allowing the entire Secondary School and Year 12 family and friends to come together to celebrate their graduation from school. These efforts will be duplicated at next week’s Secondary School end of year awards ceremony.

Of course, with the school year all but complete, it is time for our Middle Years prefects to relinquish their roles as the new prefects are announced at this week’s awards ceremony. As they prepare to finish their time as leaders, I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their willingness to serve during this difficult year. At no point during the year did our Middle Years leaders lose their enthusiasm to lend a helping hand at the shortest of notice. Conducting The Haven Awareness Week was an extremely notable achievement as it helped to build on the success of last year’s initial involvement in the Walk the Talk programme thereby embedding it as part of the St Paul’s Calendar. My thanks also to Miss Baudinet for the great job she did in her first year of coordinating our Middle Years’ prefects.

I am looking forward to seeing many families at our awards ceremony on Thursday, 3rd December. It will certainly be great to be able to welcome parents back on to the school campus for this event. With this being the last edition of Revelations for the year I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a happy and holy Christmas and a wonderful New year. I hope you all have most relaxing and re-energising summer holiday! See you in 2021!

Conservatorium and Ensembles

Congratulations to Isabelle Todorovic who received the 2020 Senior School Music Academy Award. Congratulations, in advance, to the recipients of the 2020 Middle, Primary and Infants Music Academy Awards who will be announced in our Junior and Senior School Presentation Ceremonies.

Congratulations also to The Céili Band and the Wind Ensemble who completed their Music Academy recordings on Monday, 16th November and Thursday, 19th November. Access to the performances will be available to view in the coming week. Thank you also to the teachers and technicians who assisted on the recording days.

As the year draws to a close it is appropriate for me to thank the community for your support of the Music Academy - Ensembles and Conservatorium Program. We are committed to offering positive, rigorous and contemporary instruction and experiences for the students and we hope that lessons and rehearsals have provided this in 2020.

Please note that existing lesson enrolments roll-over into the new year. This means that if your child is currently having lessons in the Conservatorium, your tutor will be in contact to schedule new lesson times early next term when timetables and other activities are determined. Some tutors may have already discussed 2020 lessons with you. There is no need to register for lessons via my.stpauls for 2020 because the enrolment is ongoing. However, if you would like to enrol a sibling or a child for new lessons, the registration survey can be found on the my.stpauls Music Academy Page.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank some staff who have provided wonderful support and skill which has contributed to the smooth running of the Music Academy this year.

Thank you to Mrs Hayley Warner, our Administrator of Arts Academies for her tireless work to process registrations and complete the administrative work for the Music Academy. Thank you also to Mrs Gina Mansley for all her work coordinating the Junior School Curriculum Music and Ensembles Program.

Thank you to our highly skilled tutors and conductors who have worked with the students to lead them on their musical journey. SPGS highly values our tutors and acknowledges the hard work that they do in order to enhance education at St Paul’s. They are very important members of our community.

Finally, thank you to our students who have shown commitment and creativity in Ensembles and Music and Speech & Drama lessons in 2020. What a year!

If you have any comments and/or suggestions regarding the Music Academy, I invite you to contact me, so that I can continue to refine and develop the Program.

Merry Christmas and have a peaceful and joyful holiday break.
