Janeil Engelstad initiates multiform, collaborative projects thataddress social, historical and environmental concerns. Valuingthe potential of collaborations, her process for this workincludes embedding herself in communities, deep listening,extensive research and building coalitions between artsinstitutions, schools, government agencies, NGOs and others.These projects often create a place for individuals andgroups who do not have access to art making opportunities ora voice in society to express their identity, experiences andpoints of view.

Engelstad has led arts education organizations, large andsmall, in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Her success inthese roles led to her work as a member of The CollegeBoard's National Arts and Education Task Force, whichdeveloped recommendations for the United States Congressas part of the national arts based learning initiative connectedto STEM and other Pre-K – 12 programs.

Ms. Engelstad has taught and lectured at universitiesthroughout North America and Europe and in 2006 she was aFulbright Scholar at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design inBratislava, Slovak Republic. She is a member of the SocialPractice Art Research Center at the University of California,Santa Cruz and the Founding Director of Make Art withPurpose (MAP) an organization that produces internationalprojects addressing social and environmental concerns thatoften include arts education as a core component ofmethodology and process.
