DownOut
Aloud, hacking cough sounded throughthe house. Cynthia Jones looked over in
concern at her oldest son, the source of the
cough. Sixteen-year-old Zac had been like this for a
month, with no sign of stopping. It was time to do
something about it.
He just had this awful, painful sounding cough,
and it wouldnt stop, she said. I was concerned.
Soon, however, the entire family had problems
of their own to worry about. First, my sister had
strep [throat], Zac remembers. Then, my dad
and my brother had the flu. The doctors think I
caught some of that, along with a form of walking
pneumonia. And finally, my mom got a bad cough
like mine. All of this happened within the span of
a month, from mid-January to mid-February.
Fortunately, the bout of sickness didnt cost the
family much.
With the insurance I get from my work [at UPS],
the medicines cost us very little. Sometimes all we
have to pay is a five-dollar co-pay, Eric Jones said.Still, the whole time period was trying on the
whole family. There were definitely some sacrifices
made on everyones part in an effort to make sure
they all had a chance to get better.
The kids all missed a lot of school, especially
Emily, Cynthia said. Eric missed some days of
work, which he hasnt done in a long time. It wasnt
fun, and we hope it doesnt happen again.
After a lot of visits to the different doctors offices
and pharmacies, the sickness seemed to be gone.
No more strep, no more pneumonia, and the flu
was a thing of the past.
And as for the cough?
I still have a little bit, Zac said. I dont think it
will ever fully go away. But at least people can sit by
me without being afraid of getting sick.
make up all that work. In fact, the
struggle Jones had with his work was
apparent in his grades. I missed sev-
eral days of math, so I didnt under-
stand the concepts for the test. This
slip in grades was apparent in his prog-
ress report, which featured two Bs, the
first time this had happened in Joness
school career. I was really disappoint-
ed, because I know he can do so much
better, said Eric Jones, Zacs dad.

Sickness Strikes a Family Down

Odd One Out|Zac watches his familyeat while he sits with nothing in front of
him. I try to make him eat something forevery meal, his mom Cynthia said. Im
worried about how fast he loses weight.Photo by Eric Jones
While sick with pneumonia, Zac found that he often had no appetite.
Unfortunately, that tendency hasnt left even now that hes better. I
just dont want to eat anymore, and nothing really holds an appeal for
me, he said. Its disappointing, because I always loved to eat.
The loss in appetite was followed by a rapid weight loss, which con-
cerned even himself. Going from 140 pounds to 129 pounds in about
a week was weird. One day my jeans
all fit - the next, I was tightening my
belt all the way, and I had no idea
why.
After a visit to East Louisville
Pediatrics, Zac was referred to
Baptist Hospital Eastpoint for somebloodwork. Shes afraid it might
be [caused by] diabetes, but I guess
time will tell.

nights and days: FanFiction. I dont even
remember how it started, but I started reading
and I got addicted, he said. I focus on Harry
Potter FanFics, because I feel like its such a huge
universe, you can do pretty much anything with it.
All things are possible with magic.
Zac finally got the nerve up to try his hand at
writing some himself. This past January, he began
work on his story Let Them Know. Its basi-
cally the books through the eyes of characters of
the past - Harrys parents, etc. Theyre reading thebooks and having their own reactions to the adven-
tures of the son theyll never know, Zac said.

to constantly be in one place:
the internet. As soon as he gets

From there, he usually moves on to
Tumblr. Tumblr is a big time-suck
that just makes you hate yourself, said
Rebecca Woodburn, one of Zacs friends
who introduced him to the site.
Finally, he heads to Yahoo! to check
his e-mail. This has become increasingly
important for him this year for many
reasons, but one stands out.I use it to keep up with one of my
best friends that I never see anymore, he
said.

The presents were opened, the wrapping paper strewn around the oor, and Christ-
mas was coming to an end. But one present remained for each child of the Jones
family, wrapped inside identically large boxes. With trembling hands, Zac opened
the package and received a pleasant surprise: a brand-new MacBook pro laptop.
I had been asking for it for a while, Zac said, but I never expected to get it. I
thought that it was too much money. One of the main reasons that Zac had wanted
the computer was so he would not have to share the main one with everyone else. It
was really slow because everyone had their own music and documents on it. I guess
it couldnt handle the trafc t hat well. Time on the computer was difcult to come
by, as well. He always hogged the computer for his work, and I couldnt use it,
said his sister, Emily. Zac, of course, cl aimed the opposite.
Whatever troubles the family had before with the shared computer, theyre gone
now thanks to the laptop. I took all my iTunes stuff off the main computer, and I
can use the laptop whenever I want. Its really convenient for me, and I cant imag-
ine being without it now.

improvementChef, interior designer, artist, TV personal-
ity, photographer. These are all things that
Zac Jones has wanted to be over the course of
his 16 years of life, but one stands out from
the rest.
Ive gone through all these phases in my
life, but phographer is the only one thats
lasted longer than a year. I think it might be
the one, Zac said.
For Christmas when he was 15, Zac recieved
a Canon Rebel T1i. He immediately set to
using it, with not so good results.
I was so excited to take pictures of ev-
erything, that they werent very good, he
admitted.
Regardless, nothing could deter Zac from
trying to improve himself. He practiced
throughout his entire sophomore year and
saw definite improvement.
I used to use a bunch of weird color filters,
because I thought they made everything look
better. Now I use original color or black and
white, and I choose my subjects more care-
fully.
Some of those subjects included friends of
Zacs who posed for photoshoots. He had me stand in the snow, and I was
just in tights and a dress, said Elizabeth
Goff. But the pictures turned out really well,
and I cant wait to model again next week.
In order to become more well-known, Zac
changed his style of shooting to manual,
instead of relying on default settings.
It really makes a difference, and I can tell
that a lot more work goes into it, said Eliza-
beth Wilder. As a fellow photographer, I can
appreciate the switch.
This switch included changing the ISO,
shutter speed, and arpeture on the camera by
hand.
ISO (International Organization for Stan-
dardization) is a measure of how sensitive
your camera is to light. This was the most
significant discovery for Zac this year.
I already knew about shutter speed, but
I had no idea what ISO was until Micah
Walker showed me, he said. Higher ISO
indoors, lower outdoors. Its really easy once
you know it.
Zac appreciates all the attention he gets for
his work.
I have people constantly asking me to plan
photoshoots for them, and now that summers
coming up, I can do that, he said. I also got
a lot of comments in my yearbook about howmuch people love it. I guess as long as people
keep appreciating what I do, Ill keep doing
it.

One of my favorite parts of photography is capturing a mo-
ment in time for forever. Theres just something extra special
about knowing that for eternity, that single instant is recorded,
and its all because of you. My favorite moments to get are
smiles, laughs, and things of that nature, because they show
the lighter and happier side of life. Theres so much depression
and negativity in the world today that people could always use
some good humor. Its rewarding to look back on a happy pic-
ture when youre feeling down and depressed. An example of
such a picture is the one to the right of my cousin Jacob at the
Memorial Day parade. Hes normally a fussy kid, so a smile
like this is rare. And now, its immortilized.
