January 2020
On the threshold of a New Year, we tend to reflect on what has happened in the past year.
I’ve been giving much thought to where we’ve been as a faith community and where God is leading us. We are in a state of transition with the call of a permanent pastor, and seeking a new Minister of Music. I pray that God will provide candidates who are healthy leaders for a faith community that has the capacity to grow and to give.
My reflections have also raised a concern about those of you who are willing volunteers and others who do not step to the front when there is a call for service. I am a big believer that healthy congregations are full of healthy volunteers. After all, we’re called to equip the saints for the work of ministry and that means that we need people actually doing ministry.
A vibrant faith community is one that is filled with volunteers—not 20 percent of the people doing 80 percent of the work but at least 80 percent of the people doing the work of the Lord!
Many of you give so much of your time and talents that I am concerned about your health and the need for rest. However, you seem to manage your time well and serve with a willing heart. Thank you!
But others don’t step up to the plate when the call is made for volunteers. This came to light this fall when Shannon Bastian was seeking youth to participate in the Christmas pageant and again in the Advent
Season when we were seeking volunteers to serve as worship leaders (specifically acolytes, processional youth and ushers). Kelly Bastian invited her friend to play the part of Mary—thanks to Kelly and Maddie! On the Sunday evening before Christmas, I made a series of phone calls to ask people, especially youth, to
serve. As many of you know, my daughter, Elizabeth, heard me on the telephone for an hour or more, and offered to serve as crucifer for the processions on Christmas Eve. With some tongue in cheek humor, her only condition was that her name appear in the bulletin in fancy font—which is what we did!
But seriously, Zion is richly blessed with a wide variety of ages who can serve for worship and other needs.
When the call goes out for volunteers, especially for festival worship services such as Holy Week/Easter and Advent/Christmas, won’t you please sign up so that we don’t have to beg you to serve? Parents, you are a very important link to this process to encourage your children and youth to serve. Confirmed youth promise to continue in the life of the faith community by serving!
In closing, I am thankful for all of you who volunteer, for all of you who volunteered when I called, and for all of you who are waiting to find a niche to offer your time and talents at Zion. If you’re not sure about the responsibilities of a certain task, talk to me! I’ll be glad to help. Let this New Year change you by volunteering—you’ll never be the same—you’ll be a better person.
Blessings, Pastor Van Orden

of kindness and generosity from the faith
communities of Zion Hummelstown and St.

Everyone worked together to make
Christmas brighter and happier for the
children who are served by the Food Pantry.
With Appreciation
Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
I am deeply touched by your
expressions of appreciation for my
service to the Lord as interim pastor
of Zion. Your beautiful Christmas
cards, gifts, and poinsettias placed
in my honor warmed my heart and
carried me through a very busy
time of the year.
I am privileged to serve you and I
trust that the New Year will
continue to bring us joy and
guidance for Zion’s future.
With peace and joy in Christ,
Pastor Van Orden
The beauty of the worship space and the
inspiring worship services happen because of
those who graciously give their time and
talents by serving as worship leaders, singing
or playing in a choir (Chancel, Bells Angels
and Zion’s Junior Voices), as soloist or small
group ensemble, decorating, tending to the
multitude of candles that we use for the
Advent wreath and candlelight services, caring
for the altar paraments and communion,
cleaning (Custodians Jim & Deb Friedel),
preparing many bulletins (Vilma Linde),
leading the music (Adam Koch), and bringing
it all together to celebrate the coming of our
Savior, Jesus Christ, the Light of the World.
Thank you to everyone who served in some
way—visibly and behind the scenes.
Your service is priceless!

From Adam Koch…
Dear Friends of Zion,
I would like to take a moment to reflect on our time together. When I arrived at Zion I was not sure what I was getting into or what to expect. What I quickly found was a group of people who welcomed me as Minister of Music and my husband, Matthew, into the life of Zion. Choirs were eager to sing, ring, and socialize, so we ‘hit the ground running’ from the moment I arrived. In my 29 years working in a church I am not sure that I have encountered a congregation that is as supportive of music as you all are. I know that this will continue for generations to come both in worship and in inviting the greater community to Zion to share music and the arts with your neighbors.
Coming to Zion I also found an incredible staff to work with. Jim and Deb Friedel have been of great help in organizing the music

rooms. Vilma Linde is professional in all aspects of her work, a joy to be around and made sure I was on top my administrative duties! Working with Pastor Lois was not work at all. I enjoyed our collegial working relationship, creative thinking, chats about organs we played, taking in her sermons, and the continual support she provided me at Zion and while I was finishing my degrees at Shenandoah Conservatory.
Then it came time to say – “see you later.” Not goodbye. Thank you for the beautiful prayers during worship, the t-shirt, chocolates, and your incredibly generous gift. Over the years I have often wondered if my work has a positive or any impact on the congregation I am serving. Your send-off showed me that yes, it does. Matthew and I cannot thank you enough for your support, generosity, and open arms welcome.
With a heart full of gratitude,
Adam
