The Worship of Father, Son & Holy SpiritOctober 2, 2011

The Lord’s Day

Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passedbefore the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children4 to 6 years of age may be dismissed to Godly Play prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lordrichly bless you.

Song of Assembly1

Our Great God OrtegaEternal God unchanging, mysterious and unknown,

Your boundless love unfailing in grace and mercy shown.Bright seraphim in endless flight around Your glorious throne;

They raise their voices day and night in praise to You alone.

Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!

Lord, we are weak and frail, helpless in the storm.Surround us with Your angels, hold us in Your arms.

Our cold and ruthless enemy, his pleasure is our harm.Rise up, O Lord, and he will flee before our sov’reign God.

Let every creature in the sea and every flying bird;Let every mountain, every field and valley of the earth;Let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe

Sing praises to the living God who rules them by His word.

Welcome and Preparation for WorshipHis first coming to judgment at the destruction of Jerusalem had terrors about it that till then had never been realized onthe earth; his last coming will be more dreadful still. ~ Charles Spurgeon

Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counseltogether, against the LORD and against his anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords fromus!” He who sits in the heavens laughs.... Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD

with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quicklykindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. ~ Psalm 2

The Lord Gives Us His PresenceCall to Worship2 Romans 11:33-36Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutablehis ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him thathe might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever!

Prayer of Adoration & Praise

Hymn of Praise

Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Van Dyke/ClowneyJoyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away;

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays;Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea;Chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in Thee.

God of glory, power, mercy, all creation praises Thee;We, Thy creatures, would adore Thee now and through eternity.Saved to magnify Thy goodness, grant us strength to do Thy will;

With our acts as with our voices thy commandments to fulfill.

Old Testament Reading: The Living God, The Saving God Isaiah 46:8-13Remember this and stand firm, recall it to mind, O my people. Remember the former things of old; for I am God, andthere is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times thingsnot yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.” I have spoken, and I will bring it topass; I have purposed, and I will do it. Listen to Me, you wandering of heart, you who are far from Me: I will bring nearmy righteousness; it shall not remain far off, and My salvation will not delay; I will put My great salvation upon you, forMy own glory.”

The Lord Gives Us His GraceThe Unflattering Truth Romans 3:23For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

2 We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in His name.2

We Confess our Sins to GodOur God and Father, Your law exposes our hearts, uncovering the evil we have done and the good we have leftundone. We’ve broken all of your commandments by trusting in created things, when we should have trusted onlyin you. Lord, we confess our sins to you, agreeing with you that they have been constant, offensive, and evil. Thankyou for delivering us from your wrath and saving us through your Son, Jesus Christ. We come to you because youare “the LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithful-ness.” Lord, have mercy on us and forgive us; and enable us, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, more and more to dieunto sin and live unto righteousness... Silent & Personalized Confession of Sin... Amen!

The Unthinkable Truth Romans 3:24-25... and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as apropitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.

Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs

Come Ye Sinners SmithCome ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore.

Jesus, ready, stands to save you, full of pity joined with power.He is able, He is able; He is willing; doubt no more.

Come ye needy, come and welcome; God’s free bounty glorify:True belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh.Without money, without money come to Jesus Christ and buy.

Come ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall.If you tarry till you’re better, you will never come at all.

Not the righteous, not the righteous; sinners Jesus came to call.

Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended; pleads the merit of His blood.Venture on Him; venture wholly, let no other trust intrude.None but Jesus, none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good.

Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder NewtonLet us love and sing and wonder, let us praise the Savior’s name.

He has hushed the law’s loud thunder, He has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame.He has washed us with His blood, He has washed us with His blood,He has washed us with His blood, He has brought us nigh to God.

Let us love the Lord Who bought us, pitied us when enemies,Called us by His grace and taught us, gave us ears and gave us eyes.

He has washed us with His blood, He has washed us with His blood,He has washed us with His blood, He presents our souls to God.

3

Let us sing though fierce temptation threaten hard to bear us down.For the Lord, our strong salvation, holds in view the conqu’ror’s crown.

He, Who washed us with His blood, He, Who washed us with His blood,He, Who washed us with His blood, soon will bring us home to God.

Let us praise and join the chorus of the saints enthroned on high.Here they trusted Him before us, now their praises fill the sky.

Thou hast washed us with Thy blood, Thou hast washed us with Thy blood,Thou hast washed us with Thy blood, Thou are worthy Lamb of God.

How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds NewtonHow sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear!

It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast;’Tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary rest.

Dear Name! The rock on which I build, my shield and hiding place,My never-failing treas’ry filled with boundless stores of grace.

Jesus, my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, my Prophet, Priest, and King,My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, accept the praise I bring.

Ten Thousand Times Ten Thousand Alford/DykesTen thousand times ten thousand in sparkling raiment bright,The armies of the ransomed saints throng up the steep of light:

’Tis finished, all is finished, their fight with death and sin;Fling open wide the golden gates, and let the victors in.

What rush of alleluias fills all the earth and sky!What ringing of a thousand harps bespeaks the triumph nigh!

O day, for which creation and all its tribes were made;O joy, for all its former woes a thousandfold repaid!

O then what raptured greetings on Canaan’s happy shore;What knitting severed friendship up where partings are no more!Then eyes with joy shall sparkle, that brimmed with tears of late;

Orphans no longer fatherless, nor widows desolate.

Bring near Thy great salvation, Thou Lamb for sinners slain;Fill up the roll of Thine elect, then take Thy power, and reign;

Appear, Desire of nations, Thine exiles long for home;Shoe in the heaven Thy promised sign; Thou Prince and Savior, come.

Solemn Vows (PCA Book of Church Order §57-5)Do you acknowledge yourself to be a sinner in the sight of God, justly deserving His displeasure, and without hope exceptthrough His sovereign mercy?

Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and Savior of sinners, and do you receive and rest upon Him alonefor salvation as He is offered in the Gospel?

Do you now resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you will endeavor to live as becomesfollowers of Christ?

Do you promise to support the Church in its worship and work to the best of your abilities?

Do you submit yourself to the government and discipline of the Church, and promise to study its purity and peace?

The Sacrament of the Lord’s SupperCommunion, also called The Lord’s Supper or Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committedfollowers of Jesus Christ to share in this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims thegospel, who are at peace with God and their neighbor, and who seek strength to live in a deeper communion with Jesus.If you are not a Christian, or you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer.We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the Church.

Lord Have Mercy MerkelJesus I’ve forgotten the words that you have spoken,

Promises that burned within my heart have now grown dim;With a doubting heart I follow the paths of earthly wisdom,

Forgive me for my unbelief, renew the fire again.

Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy.Lord have mercy on me.

I have built an altar where I worship things of man,I have taken journeys that have drawn me far from You.

Now I am returning to Your mercies ever flowing,Pardon my transgressions, help me love You again.

I have longed to know You and Your tender mercies,Like a river of forgiveness ever flowing without end.

I bow my heart before You in the goodness of Your presence,Your grace forever shining like a beacon in the night.

The Lord Gives Us His BlessingBenediction4 from Philippians 2:13It is our God who works within you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Therefore, go in peace and in hope.Amen.

Blessed be the Lord God Almighty FittsBlessed be the Lord God Almighty,Who was, and is, and is to come.

Blessed be the Lord God Almighty,Who reigns forevermore.

4 Just as God called us into His presence at the beginning, so now He commands His blessing upon us as we depart. We look up and extend our handsin a posture of thanksgiving as we receive this great gift. Our final response to God’s assurance of His peace and presence upon those who are in Christis a chorus of joyful song.

“A Long Obedience in the Same Direction”A study of Eugene Peterson’s book looking at the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). These are the particular songs thatthe Hebrew pilgrims would sing on their way up to worship in Jerusalem, and they have much to teach us about worship,service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community and blessing. Room 158a, (right off the sanctuary).

“The Righteous Shall Live By Faith”A study of R. C. Sproul’s book looking at the book of Romans. The book of Romans has been called “Paul’s fullest,grandest, most comprehensive statement of the gospel,” and it’s just as vital for the church today as on the day it waswritten. Room 167a, (down the hall from the church office).

Sedona Class for Young AdultsThe Young Adult Class is studying the book of John, using an excellent study guide (very understandable and applicable)by Frank Barker. The book of John was “written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and thatby believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). Room 168a — the “waterfall room,” off the back hallway, whichcan be accessed from the hallway across from the church office.
