    During the summermonths,whenourminds turn to sipping iceddrinks andplanning lazy vacationdays, itbecomeseasy to

    forgetourneighbors livingeachdaywithoutaplaceto laytheirheadsorfoodtoputontheirplates. However,with itsbrutal

    heatandthreatofhyperthermia,thisseasoncanbejustascruelasthewintermonths. Fortunately,DPHWisabletoofferacool

    placeoutofthesunforourclientstorestandtoreceivethemealsandservicestheyneed. Witheconomictroublesbeginningto

    impactall income levels,DPHW isseeingan increase inclients(seegraphbelow)evenaswestrugglewithan increase infood

    pricesandothercostsofdoingbusiness.

    summermonthshavebroughtonlyanxietyandhardship.

    Everytwoweeks,TransgenderHealthEmpowerment(T.H.E.)

    HIV

    testing,

    referrals

    for

    treatment,connectionstomedicalcare,andHIVcounseling

    toDPHWclients. Asanincentivetoengageintheseservices,

    T.H.E. offers clients a $10 gift card. Additionally, T.H.E.

    supplies DPHW with safe sex educational materials and

    supplies.

    T.H.E. is a nonprofit organization that advocates for and

    supports a continuum of health and social services for

    underserved sexual minorities. The services that T.H.E.

    providesareamong themostpopularactivities thatDPHW

    offers,andthisthrivingpartnershipengages 40to50people

    eachmonth. We are glad to be able to offer clients the

    opportunity to be proactive about their health status and

    medicalcarethroughthiswonderfulprovider!

    Watch DC United vs. FC Dallas and Help the Homeless!

    On Saturday, September 13, 2008

    there will be a toiletry donation

    drive benefittingDPHWattheRFK

    Stadium.

    All

    items

    collected

    at

    the

    stadium on this evening will be

    donated to theDinnerProgram for

    HomelessWomen.

    United Drives is one of the many great community

    involvement initiatives that the DC United team sponsors.

    Everymonth,donationdrivesareheldbeforehomegames to

    collectdifferent inkind items that variousworthynonprofits

    withintheGreaterWashingtonDCareaneed.

    On Saturday, September 13, DPHW will collect all of the

    toiletriesthataredonatedpriortothegame. Toiletrieswillbe

    collectedfrom

    5:30pm

    until

    7:45pm.

    All

    donations

    will

    be

    collectedatGateAofthestadium.

    EachdonorwillreceiveaBuyOne,GetOneFree

    ticket voucher that is redeemable either for that

    days match or any other regular 2008 season

    times. Bryanhelpedusinsomanyways:tohaveabudget,

    tosavemoney,andtofindaplaceto live. Wenowhave

    ourownplaceandaredoingbetterthanever.

    Services Summer Youth Employment Program. These four

    young people gained valuable work experience while

    contributing to the success of DPHWs homeless clients.

    Ms.Debra Smith is a bona fide international affairs and current events

    aficionado. Havingworkedforthefederalgovernmentformanyyearsas

    an international relations specialist, she continues to be intrigued by

    happenings in all parts of the world. In particular, she tracks energy

    developmentsandcommerce. Shesworkingonher resumesothatshe

    canreturntoworkininternationalrelations. AnativeWashingtonian,Ms.

    Smithcanalsotellyoumanyofthebestplacestovisitinthearea.

    Trenett

    experience

    in

    crisis

    intervention,

    case

    man

    agement,housing,andgroupcounseling. Mostrecently,sheservedasaResidentialCounselorforAngel

    WatchShelteroftheCatholicCharitieswheresheworkedwithhomelessvictimsofdomesticviolence. She

    was also gained clinical socialwork skills during her employment as a SocialWorkers Assistant with

    BradfordOaksNursingandRehabilitationCenter inClinton,MD. Inherfreetime,sheenjoys listeningto

    outdoors,andbaking.

    Michael reports that inhisnewpositionasDPHWsA.M.ProgramAssistant,hehasalready learneda

    greatdeal frompeoplewho come from allwalksof life. Prior tojoiningDPHW,Michaelworkedwith

    HeritageTechasa telecommunications technician,at theVeteransDevelopmentCorporation,andasa

    MentorandLifeskillsCoachwithLifePiecestoMasterpieces. Michaelhopesonedaytobeajuniorhigh

    schoolteachersothathecanmakeanimpactonyoungpeople. Whenhesnotworking,Michaellovesto

    readandwritepoetry.
