DR-3080CII Release Letter Version 1.0 August, 2004 4

DR-3080CII Overview The DR-3080CII incorporates the scanning engine and patented feeding system of the DR-3000 Series. As such it inherits all the features and proven reliability of the popular DR-3000 series. This model series traces its roots to the DR-3020, Canon’s first entry into the scanner market in 1996. The DR-3020 was the first true “desktop” high-performance scanner and it quickly earned a reputation as a solid “workhorse”. It also was the first high-speed scanner compact enough to be portable. The DR-3020 was succeeded in 2001 with the introduction of the award winning, color DR-3080C and the DR-3060. The DR-3080CII further enhances these capabilities with the addition of dual high-speed USB 2.0 and SCSI III interfaces and duplex color scanning. Canon’s patented feeding system, first introduced on the DR-3020, ensures a wide range of mixed batches and other challenging work is handled with minimal operator intervention. Other newly added features, covered in this release letter, and the bundling of CapturePerfect 2.2 round-out the product offering. With the addition of the DR-3080CII to the line-up of DR-Scanners, the popular DR-3060 will be repositioned at a lower price point and has been included where applicable for your reference. The feature set of the DR-3060 remains unchanged, with the exception of an upgrade of the bundled software to CapturePerfect 2.2 and slight color change (as with the 3080CII as well). The DR-3080CII (and DR-3060) has a new higher recommended Daily Duty Cycle of 4,500 scans. These enhancements, together with a lower Suggested Retail Price of $3,950. (DR-3080C SRP was $4,800), add up to an incredible value for one of the most proven scanning platforms on the market today. Most industry analysts agree that this product will sell well and we hope that together we will prove them right!

DR-3080CII Product Features Patented Feeding System The DR-3080CII incorporates the patented feeding system of the DR-3000 Series first incorporated into the groundbreaking DR-3020. Unlike any other scanner, this system dynamically adjusts for the thickness of each document in batches during feeding. In large part this system put the DR-30XX models in a reliability class of their own. The diagrams below illustrate the layout of the system and patented Canon technology that makes this possible.

While 600dpi optical resolution has become somewhat of a defacto specification for new machines, very rarely do popular applications capture above 300dpi. In Toriginal DR-3080C supported only a SCSI II interface, which was contemporary with the times and swidespread use today. These are the same interface standards incorporated into the recently introduced DR-6080/9080C and DR-7080C. By having a dual interface, the DR-3080CII satisfies legacy systems with SCSI interface (Win 95/98/NT), VRS Adrenaline and newer systems with the current standard PC USB 2.0 connection.

Also, by upgrading from SCSI II interface to SCSI III interface, the DR-3080CII throughput increases

Operational Simplicity •

"Pre Scan" is a function to obtain the best image for a batch by adjusting brightness and contrast of the first scanned page. Different from "Preview", the user can adjust them while viewing the changing image of the first page. As the image is sent to an application program after the adjustment, the user do not need to scan the first page again. The user can adjust Brightness of the image while viewing the changing image even when it is scanned in "Black & White" (binary) mode. "User Preference" is a function that registers up to 20 customer, user defined scanner settings. With this feature, users that deal with many types of documents do not need to set each scanning condition and can start scanning immediately by selecting a stored preference.

• “Skip blank page” When a blank page is scanned, "Skip blank page" detects it and discards the data. With this feeding mode users can load a mix of simplex and duplex documents in a batch and only capture the pages with information.

• “Scan Panel” In order to change scanner settings it is common to stop scanning first and then change them, usually through a couple of layers of pull down menus. "Scan Panel" allows users to change the most common settings through a virtual control panel on the screen. The panel also has a function to separate batches.

• “Help Menu” The driver manual of the DR-3080C is replaced with a "Help" function in the driver.

This new "Help” function is very easy to use and has many dialog shots and hyper links. The hardware manual is bundled as hard copy as with all current DR series products.

Dropout Color and Color Emphasis

The DR-3080CII is able to dropout colors or enhance colors (Figure 1). The DR 3080C only supported simplex dropout: Red, Green or Blue (Figure 2).

Figure 1 – (DR-3080CII with both) Figure 2 – (DR-3080C with only color drop out option)

When color dropout is applied, the scanner ignores that color data from the scan. For example, Figure 3 is the image without the color dropout. It displays “$419,900” on lower/left side of the image. When red color drop out is applied (Figure 4), the “$419,900” is no longer on the image.

Figure 3 Figure 4

The color dropout and color enhancement can be applied on either scanning side or both. Unlike recently introduced higher–end models, duplex color dropout must be the same color for both sides.

DR-3080CII Release Letter Version 1.0 August, 2004 11

Folio Scanning Mode

Folio mode was introduced as an upgrade to the DR-2080C to support 11x17 document scanning on a scanner with a letter-size throat. Documents folded in two can be scanned in duplex and merged as one image. In this method specifications based on competitors 11” x 17” models can be met for those prospects with occasional or no need for 11” x 17” scanning. Normally, the DR-3080CII can scan up to legal size documents. When ledger (11” x 17”) sized paper is folded in half, it can be feed into the feeder. By selecting Folio Scanning (scanning side), the DR-3080CII will scan the folded document in duplex and then stitches the two images together.

Advanced Text Enhancement

The DR-3080C provided a Text Enhancement scanning mode. This scanning mode is used to enhance text for documents in which the text is printed on a dark background, documents with faint characters written in pencil, and documents in which the text is printed in a color other than black. With the DR-3080CII, we now offer Advanced Text Enhancement scanning mode. This new scanning mode provides better quality of text enhancement compared to text enhancement. The scanning results of Advanced Text Enhancement are output in black & white binary mode. “Advanced Text Enhancement” is an Image Enhancement Technology, that automatically applies the best slice level to the focused image in order to obtain the best binary image. With this function, text can be clearly visible from its background to come up with a well-contrasted image.

Black/White Text Enhancement Advanced Text Enhancement Color Smoothing

A moiré pattern is crosshatched or a dotted pattern that appears from scanned images of printed material. Caused by interference between two sets of fine patterns grids, the scanner samples the image and the halftone screen for the original cause of this pattern. Previously, the DR-3080C used a “Thinning Out” method in converting resolution, which couldn’t eliminate moiré patterns. With the DR-3080CII, “Smoothing” has been implemented, a method that improves color image quality. This new method reduces Moiré patterns in lower resolutions by smoothing pixels in horizontal and vertical scanning axis.

“Thinning Out” “Smoothing”

DR-3080CII Release Letter Version 1.0 August, 2004 13

Patch Code Detection Patch code sheets are sheets of paper, or preprinted forms on which a special pattern is printed so that files can be separated without interrupting the scanning operation. The scanner recognizes the pattern on these sheets, which allows files to be separated. A common application for patch codes are insurance claim forms, where each claim is a new batch and all the following supporting documents are part of that batch until the next claim form is detected. Patch codes are provided on the installation disc in PDF format and can also be photocopied for use. Both patch code patterns are shown below.

Pre Scan “Pre Scan” is a function to obtain the best image for a batch by adjusting brightness and contrast of the first scanned page. Different from “Preview”, users can make adjustments while viewing the adjusted image of the first page. As the image is sent to an application program after the adjustment, the users do not need to scan the first page again. The user can adjust Brightness and Contrast of the image while viewing the changing image in Color, Grayscale and Black & White” (binary) mode. Scanning procedure using [Pre Scan] is as follows: 1. Click Pre Scan button on “Scan Panel” 2. Click a scanning start button of application program to start scanning 3. Only the first page of a batch is scanned and the image is displayed in “Prescan Window”. 4. Adjust Brightness and Contrast while viewing the changing image. 5. Push Start button on “Scan Panel” after the adjustment. 6. Displayed image is sent to the application program. 7. Rest of the batch is scanned with the same Brightness and Contrast as the first page and sent to the application program. As values of Brightness and Contrast the user set in “Prescan Window” is reflected to the ones of Basic Setting Dialog box, the user can register them by “User Preference”.

DR-3080CII Release Letter Version 1.0 August, 2004 14

User Preference “User Preference” is a function to register up to 20 scanner settings. Thanks to the function, when the user deal with many types of documents, the user do not need to set each scanning condition one by one and can start scanning immediately. The function helps those who are not familiar with the scanner to obtain the best image quality by just selecting the conditions registered.

Type a name and click [OK] Click [Save] after the user set each item.

Three scanner settings, “voucher1”, “voucher2” and “voucher3, are registered. When the user scan voucher2, what the user have to do is just to select the “voucher2” in the “User Preference” so that all conditions registered for the voucher2 are set.

DR-3080CII Release Letter Version 1.0 August, 2004 15

Skip Blank Paget 3: Skip blank page When a blank page is scanned, “Skip blank page” detects it and discards the page. Thanks to the function, the user can load a mix of simplex and duplex documents in a batch. For example, when the user scan a batch which consists of following three documents in “Duplex” mode, all front sides and backsides are scanned and stored. In short, the backside of 2 and the front side of 3 are scanned and stored as blank pages.

compliant email application program must be installed on the computer. o Before using this operation, the e-mail software must be set to start by selecting it as follows: Start

menu -Settings - Control Panel - Internet Options - Programs tab - E-mail. (This example is for Windows 98: please follow the corresponding procedure for the user operating system.)

Thumb Nail View By opening the thumbnail window, open images can be viewed at reduced size. Thumbnail (reduced) views of opened images are displayed in the Thumbnail window, and the selected thumbnail in the window is displayed in the main Image View window.

Multi-Window By splitting the image display window, up to 32 image pages can be viewed.

Splitting the display window allows the user to display more than one page image at once.

Searchable PDF (OCR) Users can save images as Searchable PDF by applying OCR. OCR setting can be choosing from various numbers of languages. (see below for more details)

Scan Batch File Mode (Save as two images) Splitting an image enables the user create two separate images from one when scanning, by splitting the image horizontally or vertically. This is useful for creating a two-page spread of a single image for use in books and so forth.

Searchable PDF Creation As with Canon’s other recent document scanners, Canon’s proprietary PDF software engine generates “searchable” PDF files, from which text searches can be performed. Text searches can now be performed throughout all of the pages saved as PDF files with the new DR-3080CII.

Scanning Speeds Scanning speeds are influenced by many factors including CPU, memory (PC), front-side bus, scanner bandwidth (based on bus employed) and application software. Many features that involve software (drivers) can be greatly affected by host processing of the output data. Following is a list of features that may result in a reduced scanning speed or pausing:

• Software Deskew • Page Size Detection • Advanced Text Enhancement • Searchable PDF Creation • Skip Blank Page • Patch Code Detection

Application Software Compatibility The ISIS® and TWAIN drivers for the DR-3080CII were developed by Canon utilizing Pixel Translation’s QuickDriver, a set of driver development tools licensed to scanner manufacturers to develop drivers. These drivers have been certified by Pixel Translations, are then added to the PixTools Scan toolkits so that independent software developers will be able to include our hardware products as a supported capture device. While these drivers are widely accepted and are compatible with many ISIS and TWAIN compliant applications, please check with your application provider for complete details. Some application providers conduct their own tests to certify scanners with their software.
