Scientific projects portfolio and main professional skillsBrief

summaryMy scientific interest focuses on providing a (statistical) mathematical descriptionof social phenomena. In particular, I am interested in the quantitative study ofcrowd dynamics by means of high-statistics, high-resolution, observations of real-lifehuman crowds. To this aim, since 2012, I worked at the interface between field-experimentation (including hardware and software development) and mathematicalmodelling (including statistical physics and automated vision). I designed about 20real-life crowd tracking experiments as well as the tools - from low-level hardwareinterfaces, to high-level software – to enable an unprecedented collection of severalmillions of real-life pedestrian trajectories. The innovative approaches, quantitativemodels and technological developments that I proposed brought to 9 acceptedpublications plus several in preparation. I have been also active in crowd dynamicsmodelling in connection with structural engineering. In particular, I tackled crowd-structure interaction issues occurring along walkways or footbridges. Crowd-structureinteraction phenomena, yielding vibrations and, ultimately, structural collapse, impacton users’ comfort, serviceability, and provoked several major accidents. I establishedmy multidisciplinary scientific perspective pursuing a double PhD program (yy. 2012-2016) in Applied Mathematics (TU/e, supervisors Prof. Toschi and Prof. Muntean)and Structural Engineering (Politecnico di Torino, supervisors Dr. Bruno and Dr.Tosin). Growing through my career, gaining technical know-how and multidisciplinaryvision, I am building a solid and wide collaboration network boasting several scientificand technological partnerships.Key achievements

Since 2014 Published 33 refereed scientific works on statistical physics, mathematical model-ing, engineering or machine learning venues with 400+ citations (Google scholarbibliometric data, see “Publications” section).

Since 2014 Established a new perspective in the measurement and analysis of the activeflow of pedestrian crowds, based on a rigorous statistical physics approach. Thisleverages on a unique, own-designed, state-of-the-art, high-accuracy, measurementtechnology hinged on machine learning-aided optical Lagrangian tracking. Overthe years, I realized numerous experimental campaigns all over The Netherlands(and in Italy), collecting pedestrian tracking data unprecedented for quality andstatistical resolution. These enabled the first models for the motion of humancrowds quantitative in statistical sense. Additionally, thanks to the co-operationwith numerous stakeholders, I established the first experiments to quantify ourcapability of nudging (controlling) the motion of crowds, for enhanced comfort andsafety. My work has received substantial national and international media coverage(including CNN, NRC, NOS, Wired, National radio and television). A semi-completeperspective is on my personal page W.

Since 2016 Among the first to establish machine learning techniques for the analysis of fun-damental aspects of non-linear and turbulent dynamics. Showed the capability ofmachine learning methods in inferring properties or controlling strongly intermittentsystems.

2011 Developed the core component of the Los Alamos Plasma Simulation (LAPS) code:a high-performance distributed particle-in-cell (PIC) code. The core feature ofLAPS is its extreme modularity achieved without performance compromises via C++template metaprogramming (methods emerging during the 00’s). Employed LAPSto analyze the chaotic motion of charged particles in Field Reversed Configurations(FRC) and Tokamaks.
