STUDENT RESISTANCE TO CHANGE
What is a Change?
Change is a situation that interrupts normal patterns of organization and calls for participants to enact new patterns, involving an interplay of deliberate and emergent processes that can be highly ambiguous ( Ford et al., 2008: 363)
Key Point: Change is the process of becoming different
Types of Change
Low scope- evolutionary Maintains the essential framework but
looks for improvement in the current situation
High scope- strategic change Alters the framework and is more radical
Why do we need Change?
Coping with the environment and meeting the challenges of the society
For survival and sustainability To improve performance
Resistance to Change
Resistance to change is defined as an unwarranted and detrimental response that arises spontaneously as a reaction to change, independent of the interactions and relationships between the change agents and the recipients (Ford et al., 2008)
Views Regarding Resistance to Change
Negative viewHindrance and increase in costs to negotiate
new relationships, skills, and patterns of activity
Positive view: resistance as a ‘resource’Resistance could show aspects in change
process that were not considered for the change process
Provides a range of opportunities for growth and development
Why Students Resist Change?
The explanations for failure to change include:
(a) I can't change, (b) I don't want to change, (c) I don't know what to change, or (d) I don't know how to change.
