RESEARCH INTEREST

My research focuses on investigating copepods associated with corals and coral reef

invertebrates. In the process I will be discovering many new species of copepods which I shall

have to describe them. While describing these copepods I plan to complement them with DNA

barcoding.

In the coral reef and sea grass ecosystem I am particularly interested in the ecology of the

coral reef & the sea grass, their trophic structure and I used stable isotopes to determine the

trophic status of each marine organism/detritus, carbon sources and seasonal characteristics.

The bigger picture is to look at the food web of the zooplankton community, diurnal changes,

material and energy flow in the coral and sea grass ecosystem.

I have initiated a study on a long–term basis beginning in 2002, on the zooplankton

community structure, their abundance and biomass at a fixed station in Port Dickson. While

the zooplankton were collected each month the chlorophyll a, temperature and salinity were

also measured.

As part of the team for the HICOE of INOS, we are particularly interested to study the

zooplankton composition and biomass in the upwelling areas of the South China Sea. Dr. Nurul

Huda Ahmad Ishak have participated in the cruises encircling the upwelling areas during the

past months.
