ANTICIPATED BENEFITS OF MOVING TO SAP HANA
Benefits of moving to
Business Suite on HANA:
• Faster performance
• New capabilities
• Better user experience
• Simplified IT
infrastructure
• Real-time reporting &
analytics

THE NEED FOR A SAP HANA TRANSITION PLAN
In 2015, SAP announced that they
would continue support for the current
generation of enterprise solutions with
the SAP Business Suite until 2025.
Over the next 7 years every
organization that is running SAP
systems will have to consider how they
are going to make the move to
S/4HANA.
8
The lightning fast, columnar SAP HANA
database compresses data, which makes it
possible to keep large volumes of data in
productive systems.
However, a significant percentage of the data
in existing SAP systems is old or obsolete
and should not be moved to SAP HANA
TechEd 2016: ITM211 -Data Volume Management in the Context of SAP S/4HANA Conversions
~50%of data in SAP
systems is 2 years old
or older
22% of data is related to

33% of the largest ERP
tables are custom (z-)
tables

MIGRATION CHALLENGES FOR DPSG
• Large SAP ECC Database was not compatible with our plan to migrate to Suite
on HANA. Even after archiving technical tables, the Oracle Database was 22TB
and growing by 400 Gb every month.
• New HANA hardware was 12 TB – we needed to fit in the new HANA box and
be able to stay within the limits of the hardware for the foreseeable future.
• Suite on HANA Migration window was 72 hours max; which included an EHP
upgrade, the HANA data migration, IT validation, and business validation. We
needed to reduce hours where ever possible.
• Could not impact in anyway the Stack XML used by the HANA migration team.
• Business personnel were concerned about being able to access archived data.

GOALS FOR DATA ARCHIVING STRATEGY
1. Reduce Size of the Oracle Database prior to the HANA Migration with primary
focus on large cluster tables
2. No changes to Stack XML to prevent any impact on ongoing HANA Migration
testing (no SAINT or SPAM changes)
3. Enable transparent access to all archived information shortly after go-live with
ECC on HANA
18
DR. PEPPER SNAPPLE GROUP SOLUTION
Phase 1:
• Rapidly reduce database size using accelerated archiving tool,
focusing on large cluster tables
Phase 2:
• Provide business users with seamless access to archived data using archive
retrieval modules
Phase 3:
• Enable faster reporting on archived data with nearline storage

B171PLE0 is the only App server used
during the actual Archiving of Data to the
Repository. All seven App servers are
used to access data once it is archived.
Archiving happens in 4 steps:
1) Write: write the data to be
archived to .ADK files.
2) Store: move archived data to
long-term storage
3) Delete: delete the data from the
database.
4) Index: for objects that are PBS
enabled, run the indexing
procedure.

7 TAKE AWAYS
1. Start archiving early and obtain business approval by including them in decision making and testing.
2. Start with technical objects while you are getting approval for business objects.
3. SAP Data Archiving is a unique skillset, get the right resources.
4. Tight timeline requires periodic intense focus by client stakeholders.
5. Don’t forget to test. Testing can be complex and you need to have enough time and the right resources to do so.
6. Automated archiving significantly reduces time and effort required to reduce footprint to prepare for SAP HANA migration.
7. Data management should be considered early in the lifecycle of every system.
