1 Introduction

The Dell™ DR4X00 Advanced Disk Backup & Disaster Recovery Solution is a high-performance, disk-

based backup and recovery appliance that delivers innovative features such as inline deduplication and

compression, advanced data protection, and replication. Additionally, the management features, ease

of deployment, and an architecture that enables core backup data to remain on disk and online longer

will help organizations to reduce the complexity associated with backup.

The DR4X00 can provide a cost-efficient backup solution and this paper will show most frequently

asked questions and answers to those questions.

1.1 Audience This paper is intended for technical and non-technical sales representatives, backup software buyers

and IT managers who need to understand how to basics of the Dell™ DR4X00. Readers should have a

working knowledge of backup best practices.

1.2.7 What if a customer wants to return a DR4X00, e.g. wrong size, functional

issue, etc.? In rare cases customers desire to return a DR4X00. The DR4X00 does have a return policy and you

should not be concerned about nuances that may come up during deployment and only deployment.

1.3 Best Practices

1.3.1 Can we turn off DR4100 deduplication? No, please share your use case with your Dell CAM or Solution Consultant.

1.3.2 Is there a DR4X00 sizing calculator to determine the total capacity based

on a customer’s storage environment?

Yes, DR4X00 Storage Calculator ( ). You’ll need up to three (3) meetings with a customer to get the

nuances ironed out. For example, typical prospects know about how much data they have for

Microsoft Exchange, User Home Directories, Microsoft SharePoint/SQL, Virtual Machines/Data, etc.

In the calculator enter the amount in TB’s for each. Now, without asking the prospect, use 3 full and 5

incremental backups as a baseline for storage. In addition, use 10% change rate and 3% growth rate.

Share the assumed data with your customer, including the number and size of DR4X00’s required.

At this point the prospect should provide you with more details regarding the number of full backups

and incremental, in addition, they may know what their growth and change rates are. You are about as

close to sizing the DR4X00 units as possible without actually “testing” the systems onsite.

1.3.3 In using the storage calculator, it suggested configuration that states 18TB

for primary site and 9TB for secondary site, why? The storage calculator asks you to indicate how much storage will be replicated. You can enter values

different from the primary storage values, resulting in a larger or smaller requirement at the backup

site. Best practice is to keep the numbers the same when first discussing sizing with your customer.

1.3.4 Do we have the dedupe ratios for the data sets (home files, databases, etc)? Yes, Dell DR4X00 Disk Backup Appliance Capacity Sizing Guide

1.3.5 How does one go about “seeding” a DR4100 system to be used as a

Disaster Recovery target at a secondary site?

Option 1 – in primary site replicate DR4x00-A to DR4x00-B, ship DR4x00-B to secondary site

Option 2 – in primary site replicate DR4x00-A to DR4x00-C, ship DR4x00-C to secondary site and replicate to DR4x00-B

Option 3 – seed over WAN, NOTE: per day a DR4x00 can move ~13.85 Gbytes (168.3 * 3600*24/(1024*1024)) over T1 line.

1.3.6 Can the DR4X00 write data directly to tape? No. But it is noteworthy that you can write to tape indirectly via the backup media (DMA) server.

1.3.7 Does the DR4X00 act as a block target, e.g. iSCSI? No

1.3.9 We are ordering installation services, what is “remote installation

services?” DR4x00 Remote Installation Services Description. We recommend remote install for the DIY customer

or someone who will be “watching” the services person. If the customer doesn’t have cycles to watch

or do it, then an onsite installation service is worth the extra money.

1.3.10 Do we have any customer feedback reflecting the DR software v1.0 to DR

software v2.0? Not at this time, the DR software v2 is available and we expect updates in Q2CY13.

1.4 Product Architecture

1.4.1 Does the DR4X00 have file type specific compressors? No, it uses a sliding window variable block deduplication engine which does inline block based

compression.

1.4.2 Does the DR4X00 use the full Ocarina content aware

compression/deduplication? DR4X00 is based on Ocarina IP for deduplication/compression, there are some data reduction

algorithms that are not well suited to “in-line deduplication” and will only be available in a post-

process mode. DR4X00 uses a sliding window variable block deduplication engine and is backup

application format aware.

1.4.3 How is encrypted data handled by the DR4X00? Best practice is to store only unencrypted data on a DR4X00. Encrypted data cannot be deduplicated.

The DR4X00 does not decrypt encrypted data,

1.4.4 Does the DR4X00 have a limit on the number of containers? Yes, The Dell DR4X00 has a hard-set limit of 32 containers per device. For example, if you have 40

servers and you want to back each server up to a specific container, you will not be able to do this.

Best practice is to use one container per media server.

1.4.5 Does the DR4X00 have a hard limit on the number of concurrent CIFS, NFS,

OST, RDA, or replication connections? Yes, a maximum of 64 connections may occur simultaneously for RDA protocol (Note: CIFS, NFS and

OST are limited to 32). For example, a desktop backup software product will maintain a connection

for each desktop independently. If you have less than 32 desktops they can connect directly. If you

have more than 32 desktops you would need to deploy backup media server. For example, Dell/Quest

NetVault as the media server and then deploy the clients to the desktops from there. In this mode the

clients connect to the media server which in turn makes a single connection to the DR4X00.

1.4.6 Is it possible to scale-out/pool together multiple DR4X00’s? Yes, capacity expansion using MD1200. (Expansion software license required). Expansion is available to

DR4000 and DR4100 sold as 5.4TB or larger. Capacity expansion starts at 9TB and must be equal to

or greater than the primary DR4X00.

1.4.7 What performance can we generally expect from CIFS, Symantec OST and

NFS?

CIFS – up to 2TB/hr. (Physical Throughput)

NFS – up to 1.5TB/hr. (Physical Throughput)

DR4100 RDA – NetVault Backup

o 7.5TB/hr (Logical Throughput

o 3.9TB/hr (Physical Throughput)

Symantec OST – NetBackup and Backup Exec:

o Up to 5.4TB/hr (Logical Throughput)

o Up to 3.2 TB/hr backup (Physical Throughput)

1.4.8 Can the DR4X00 support multi-network configuration? Yes, this is supported with release 2.1

Example A, let’s assume a customer has two networks with different IPs. They would like to use one

18TB DR4X00 versus two (2) 9TB. With software release 2.1, 18TB unit NICs can be configured to

support backup from each IP network on the same system.

Example B, let’s assume a customer is backing up to CIFS, but doesn’t want the DR4X00 backing up on

the network with Active Directory. With the new software release 2.1, one NIC could be configured for

authentication network, while the other is on the backup/storage network.

1.4.9 What does the DR4xxx documentation mean by “markers?” “Markers” is shorthand for ‘Marker recognition’. The DR ingest engine is aware of data-stream format

conventions for many common DMAs. These data-stream formats grew out of older media-centric

formats (think tapes and record markers, eg. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-

us/library/windows/desktop/aa362558%28v=vs.85%29.aspx).

1.4.10 Does the DR4x00 support Dell’s iDRAC? Yes, DR4x00 uses the Enterprise version of iDRAC.

1.4.11 What chassis is the DR series system based on?

DR4X00 system is based on a modified Dell R510 appliance platform.

DR4100 system is based on a modified Dell R720xd appliance platform.

1.5 Backup Software

1.5.1 What backup software application is certified with the DR4X00 1.1.1? Dell AppAssure 4.7, Dell NetVault (8.5, 8.6, & 9.0) and vRanger 6.0

ArcServe 16, Commvault Simpana (8.0 & 9.0), EMC Networker (7.6 & 7.8), HP Data Protector 7.0,

Oracle RMAN 11g, Symantec Backup Exec (2010R3/12 Windows) and Netbackup (7.0, 7.1, & 7.5), Tivoli

Storage Manager (TSM) 6.1-.3 and Veeam (6.0 & 6.1) (VBAR).

1.5.2 Can NetVault backup be installed as a virtual “smart client” on the backup

server instead of on a physical server? Yes, smart client would access over NFS/CIFS.

1.5.3 What operating systems are supported by NetVault RDA and DR4100? Linux and Windows Only (NOTE: Unix, VTL, and NDMP backups are NOTsupported)

1.5.4 What licenses do we need to enable RDA with NVBU? DR4X00: To enable RDA with NVBU, customers must upgrade to DR OS 2.1 via

http://support.dell.com. (Note: there is no charge for this functionality based on our All Inclusive

License)

NVBU: Capacity Editions (Standard or Enterprise) entitles customers to RDA at no extra charge.

NOTE: Component based purchases must purchase an RDA use license (SKU not available at launch).

1.5.5 Can I use the DR4X00 as a NFS/CIFS share with a non-certified backup

application? No, but you may use it with the following applications:

Microsoft Windows Explorer, xcopy, and robocopy;

Linux rsync, tar, and cp

Limitations with native copy tools:

For CIFS best throughput achieved at 5 concurrent

For NFS best throughput achieved at 8 concurrent

No more than 1 million small files (<1MB)

1.5.6 With CIFS access control list (ACL) does it mean we can use DR4X00 as

general NAS? No, the DR4X00 is not a read/write storage system for open ended NAS workloads, you can use it to

backup data using common applications, e.g. Microsoft Windows Explorer, xcopy, and robocopy;

Linux rsync, tar, and cp. Note: The listed applications have other caveats like inode limits, latency etc.

1.5.7 Can DR4X00 containers (volumes) be set up for specific backups, for

example Server 1 is Symantec NetBackup and Server 2 is Commvault? Provided there are separate containers for each backup from different software this is supported.

DR4X00 will use data reduction on all containers stored on the DR4X00.

1.5.8 When backing up to tape from DR4X00 disk, is the data rehydrated? Yes, when we move data from DR4X00 to tape using backup software the data is 'rehydrated.

1.5.9 What are the differences between DL and DR, e.g. do both perform

compression as well as deduplication? Yes, both perform data reduction. A DLxxxx appliance is supported by the backup software and

requires extra CPU utilization on the backup software media server. DR4X00 performs data reduction

using "internal software (based on Ocarina)", thus eliminating CPU overhead on the backup software

media server. In turn, this reduces time it takes to “backup data” or “reduces backup window"

requirements.

Dell has two PBBA system offerings in the integrated and target categories. In the integrated PBBA

segment, Dell has its PowerVault DL4000. The DL4000 configured with Dell's AppAssure software.

The DL4000 is a 1U backup form-factor that integrates 5.5TB of storage capacity and two standby

virtual machines with snapshot, replication, deduplication and compression software to backup over

250x daily and recover applications and data within minutes. The DL4000 offers capacity expansion

options of up to 35.5TB with the PowerVault MD1200. DL4000 system provides customers turn-key

disk-based backup and recovery with wizard driven set up for rapid deployment (under 20 minutes).

Hallmark functionality of the DL4000 includes self-hosted virtual standby (up to 2). In that regard, the

DL4000 is acting as a server in times of need and disaster.

Complementing the integrated lineup is Dell's target PBBA system offering. The DR4100 is a 2U, rack-

based system available in raw capacities of 3.6TB, 7.2TB, 12TB, 24TB and 36TB configurations and is

designed for medium enterprises and remote site protection. Facilitating medium enterprise

deployment are PowerVault MD1200 expansion shelves in 12, 24 and 36 TB capacities for a total

footprint of 108TB. The DR4100 provides inline deduplication, supports NFS, CIFS and OST protocols

(included with base license) with NDMP supported in future releases. Hallmark functionality of the

DR4100 is support of Dell and third-party backup applications, all necessary licenses (e.g. replication,

Symantec OST) with non-disruptive deployment included in the base price.

1.5.10 Can DR4X00 be a backup target of a DL2200? Yes, in fact, customers of existing DL2200’s may benefit from leveraging their current

software/hardware by adding only DR4X00 behind it, see: How to add a DR4X00 appliance to a Dell

PowerVault DL backup to disk appliance.

1.5.11 What is DR Rapid Data Access, e.g. Symantec OpenStorage (OST)? For release 1.1 it is leveraging Symantec Open Storage support, future releases will be more than

Symantec OST. Please See Overview: Dell DR4X00 Support for Symantec OpenStorage and DCIG’s

1.5.12 Can the DR4X00 be used as a Virtual Tape Library (VTL)? Not at this time, but you can integrate Dell/Quest NetVault with DR4X00 which supports VTL

functionality. DR4X00 support of Dell/Quest NetVault started in Q4CY12. Note: Creating VTLs on CIFS

network shares and DR4x00 NetVault nVTL BP/setup guide.

1.5.13 Does the DR4X00 support AppAssure v5.x Not at this time.

1.5.14 Do we support NDMP, e.g. to backup to tape with AppAssure 4.7? NDMP is not natively supported by the DR4X00. Although DR4X00 does not support NDMP directly,

within these configurations the DR4X00 can participate in backups with NDMP as the source location.

In this workflow the NDMP data stream is terminated at the DMA server, and then the data is

transferred over CIFS/NFS/OST to the DR4X00 appliance. In this configuration, the data will pass

through the media server. In future versions of DR4X00 you will be able to use DR4X00 as a target

which will allow the data to bypass the media server. Use of a separate backup network minimizes any

impact with transferring the data to the DR4X00 from the media server. Check back in Q1CY13 for

roadmap update. NDMP is not supported; check back in Q1CY13 for roadmap update. In the

1.5.15 How does the DR4X00 differ from a customer purchasing AppAssure

which also does compression, deduplication and replication? The DR4X00 is complementary to backup software, e.g. EMC NetWorker. If you are "selling"

AppAssure, then you are competing with and displacing other backup software, not a DR4X00. The

DR4X00 can be used with AppAssure 4.7, but doesn’t complement AppAssure 5.x. If you are displacing

other backup software, continue to sell available Dell IP, e.g. AppAssure, NetVault, vRanger, SonicWall

CDP, etc.

1.6 Replication Architecture

1.6.1 Does the DR4X00 support N:1 replication, i.e. fan-in? Yes, DR Series system supports the 32:1 replication of data, whereby up to 32 source DR Series

systems can write data to different individual containers on a single, target DR Series system. This

supports the use case where branch or regional offices can each write their own data to a separate,

distinct container on a main corporate DR Series system. (Pg 15, Dell DR Series System Administrator

Guide)

1.6.2 Can you control replication at the container level on a DR4X00? YES, with DR series system software v2.0

1.6.3 Can you support different retention policies between source and replica

sites? Yes, with DR series system software 2.1 and NetVault Backup 9.2. Note: Replication and associated

policies are managed by NetVault.

1.6.4 Do RDA containers replicate with other NON-RDA containers? No, RDA replication is file-based and is triggered by NetVault Backup 9.2 (or other backup software

supporting RDA).

1.6.5 Can a WAN acceleration/optimization device, e.g. Riverbed or Silverpeak,

be in place between replicated DR4X00s? Yes, DR4X00 product team is working with Silverpeak to produce a best practices paper, expect it in

Q2CY13,

1.6.6 My customer wants to replicate nTB of data between remote site and

primary; can they do it under M days?? Possibly, but consider their available bandwidth as provided by their telecommunications provider. For

example, a T1 Line does 1.544 Mbits/Sec i.e. with all overhead+1% loss/jitter added will result in

168.3Kbytes/sec effective throughput. Thus per day a DR4x00 can move ~13.85 Gbytes (168.3 *

3600*24/(1024*1024)) over T1 line.

1.6.7 Does the backup server need to replicate the internal DB or can the

DR4X00 do it? No, when DR replicates, all necessary data is replicated for data reduction and rehydration, etc. The

internal system disks use RAID1 and RAID6 for availability.
