Coolkit A: Basic Literacy & Numeracy

YOU ARE INVITED!Children and other family members are invited to lend a hand in making India literate. This Coolkit can be used to teach one or several learners at the same or at different times.

This Coolkit contains sufficient material to cover three main objectives of literacy and numeracy: Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

There is no quicker way to make a person literate. A learner starts to read two-letter words from the first day itself. This motivates him / her to continue learning. Most learners can learn to read in 20 to 30 sessions of 15 minutes per day. They can read a newspaper, sign, write name and often much more. Another 10-15 hours of time investment can make a learner numerate.

Global Dream Coolkits are available in several Indian languages and a free mobile app will be downloadable soon.

There is no better way to serve. Research shows students who engage in service learning with real-life experiences improve in academic performance; they become more responsible, better appreciate values such as respect and responsibility, and learn other valuable life skills.

REGISTER YOURSELF AND YOUR LEARNERSRegister yourself and your learner as soon as possible by calling, SMS or online (see information on the back). Request a NLM or third-party evaluation when the learner is ready.

CERTIFICATES Your learner will get a certificate of becoming literate and numerate at the Basic Level and you too will get a certificate as a Leader of Change. The certificate will mention the number of learners that you taught.

1. By now, the learner should have mastered all the letters and words without matras as given in Dream Book 1. If not, you may need to go back and consolidate those first.

2. Start by conducting the PRE-TEST for ek=k�okys�'kCn�to understand the starting point of the learner with matras.

3. Ask the learner to identify the pictures on the top of each page, for example, in Lesson 2, tky. Ask them to identify the first sound, as in ^tk*

or the matra ^k*. Let them read the other pictures:�tkyk�etc. Share how vk]�Nk]�gk] and ?kk sounds are different from v]�N]�g] and ?k. Similarly, introduce each new matra.

4. Next, let the learner make new words by combining letters outside such as y in Lesson 1 above with the letters in the circles, that is, make words such as dy]�[ky] etc. Do the same in lesson 2 such as tkrk]�Nkrk]�[kkrk]�xkrk etc.

5. Have the learner read the words and sentences in each lesson.6. Correct the learner only after they have finished reading the sentences, or

if they ask for your help.7. Repeat the same process with all pages in this book till mastery is reached.

8. Check that the learner knows this book well by randomly asking him / her to read from any of the pages.

BASIC LITERACY

Literacy, defined as the ability to read and write, is the first step in education. Most individuals already know how to speak. Yet, so many individuals remain disadvantaged their entire life simply because they cannot read, This is most unfortunate also because it is very quick and easy to teach anybody to read, especially by using these uniquely designed and research-based Global Dream Coolkits.

Global Dream Coolkits make it possible for a volunteer (young or old) to teach anyone, at anytime and at any place convenient to both the learner and the volunteer.

The target learner is an illiterate person 15 or 15+ or a child out of school whose reality does not permit him / her to attend school (8-14). Please encourage out of school children to go to school. Adopt at least one learner who is 15 or 15+.

After completing this Coolkit, a learner can become fully functional in the definition provided by UNESCO and by the National Literacy Mission. S/he is able to:

1. Read a newspaper2. Sign, write name and much more3. Do simple arithmetic (numbers, +,–, x, and ¸) 4. Understand quantities and read time and calendar

After completing Coolkit A, a learner is qualified to take the NLM Basic Literacy Examination or a third-party evaluation which is considered equivalent to Class III. Further Global Dream Coolkits prepare learners to Class V level.

FASTEST WAY TO LEARN

Global Dream is an accelerated learning program as it is built on worldwide research and evidence, such as increasing thinking time that improves learning outcome. Mind connections based on visualisation make learning even more effective. A learner goes from the known to the unknown and from concrete to the abstract. A learner thus starts to read two-letter words from the first day itself. This motivates the learner to continue learning. This makes Global Dream the fastest literacy program there is.

Benefits to the Learner

n Counters Fear. Most illiterates are fearful of being cheated.

n Makes Better Informed Citizens. Learners can read a newspaper and participate better in democratic processes.

n Boosts Self-esteem. Learners begin to believe they are capable of learning. This propels them forward in a myriad ways.

n Other Benefits Include: Reduces population growth and infant mortality, improves child and maternal health, more children join school, families and next generations benefit especially when a woman becomes literate. A Cambridge University 2014 study shows that a mere 4% increase in literacy has the same impact as 25% increase in personal income.
