SleepDefinition The condition normallyrecurrent every night & lastingsome hours in which the eyesare closed & the nervoussystem inactive. The Pocket Oxford Dictionary. 12. The Sleep Cycle One sleep cycle comprises offour stages and lasts forabout 90-120 minutes. 13. The Sleep Cycle However there are some booksthat list five stages in the sleepcycle. These books consider the firstfive to ten minutes when youare falling asleep as a stage inthe sleep cycle. 14. The Sleep Cycle I agree with some researchers thatsay this is just a transitional phaseand not part of the cycle. While the other stages of sleeprepeat themselves throughout thenight, this phase of sleep does not. 15. The Sleep Cycle Dreams can occur in any of thefour stages of sleep, but themost vivid and memorabledreams occur in the last stageof sleep (also commonlyreferred to as REM sleep). 16. The Sleep Cycle The sleep cycle repeats itselfabout an average of four to fivetimes per night, but may repeatas many as seven times. Thus, you can see how a person hasseveral different dreams in onenight. 17. The Sleep Cycle However, most people onlyremember dreams that occurcloser toward the morning whenthey are about to wake up. 18. The Sleep Cycle Some people believe that theysimply do not dream, when inreality, they just dontremember their dreams. 19. The Stages Of Sleep Stage 1: You are entering intolight sleep. This stage ischaracterized by Non-rapid eyemovements (NREM), musclerelaxation, lowered bodytemperature and slowed heartrate. The body is preparing toenter into deep sleep. 20. The Stages Of Sleep Stage 2: Also characterized byNREM, this stage is characterized bya further drop in body temperatureand relaxation of the muscles. Thebodys immune system goes to workon repairing the days damage. Theendocrine glands secrete growthhormones, while blood is sent to themuscles to be reconditioned. In thisstage, you are completely asleep. 21. The Stages Of Sleep Stage 3: Still in the NREMstage, this is an even deepersleep. Your metabolic levels areextremely slow. 22. The Stages Of Sleep Stage 4: In this stage of sleep, youreyes move back and forth erraticallyas if watching something fromunderneath your eyelids. Referred toas REM sleep or delta sleep, thisstage occurs at about 90-100minutes after the onset of sleep. 23. The Stages Of Sleep Stage 4 :Your blood pressurerises, heart rate speeds up,respiration becomes erratic andbrain activity increases. Yourinvoluntary muscles alsobecome paralyzed orimmobilized. This stage is themost restorative part of sleep. 24. The Stages Of Sleep Stage 4 :Your mind is beingrevitalized and emotions isbeing fine tuned. The majority ofyour dreaming occurs in thisstage. If you are awakened during thisstage of sleep, you are morelikely to remember your dreams. 25. The Stages Of Sleep These stages repeat themselvesthroughout the night as you sleep. As the cycle repeats, you willspend less time in stages 1 to 3and more time dreaming in stage 4.In other words, it will be quickerand quicker for you to get to stage4 each time the cycle repeats. 26. REMRAPIDEYEMOVEMENT 27. REM Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is anormal stage of sleep characterizedby the rapid movement of the eyes.REM sleep is classified into twocategories: tonic and phasic. It wasidentified and defined by Kleitman andAserinsky in the early 1950s. 28. REM Criteria for REM sleep includes notonly rapid eye movement, but also lowmuscle tone and a rapid, low voltageEEG these features are easilydiscernible in a polysomnogram, thesleep study typically done for patientswith suspected sleep disorders. 29. REM During a normal night of sleep, humans usually experienceabout four or five periods ofREM sleep; they are quite shortat the beginning of the nightand longer toward the end. 30. REMREM sleep is physiologicallydifferent from the other phasesof sleep, which are collectivelyreferred to as non-REM sleep(NREM). Vividly recalled dreamsmostly occur during REM sleep. 31. DREAM 32. Dream Dreams are a succession ofimages, thoughts, or emotionspassing through the mind duringsleep. The content and purpose ofdreams are not fully understood, though they have been a topic ofspeculation and interestthroughout recorded history. 33. The Importance OfDreamingResearchers agree thatthere is a purpose andimportance todreaming. 34. The Importance OfDreamingIt is found thatdeprivation of REM sleepcauses over-sensitivity,lack of concentrationand memory loss. 35. The Importance OfDreaming People who are deprivedfrom entering the dreamphase of sleep or theREM stage, exhibitsymptoms of irritabilityand anxiety. 36. The Importance OfDreaming Dreaming is a very important rolein your well-being and health. Some researchers believe thatdreams help you to tackle stress. Dreaming is a necessity andhelps to recharge the mind andrevitalize the body. 37. Dreaming Dreaming immerse us in avirtual reality formed byimages, sounds, thoughtsand or sensations. 38. Dreaming The thoughts that we have inour memory when awakeningcan be simple ones ( an image,a sound, an idea, etc.) or veryelaborated ones. The most elaborated dreamscontain scenes, personages, sceneries and objects. 39. Dreaming Its being verified that dreamscan happen in any phase of thehuman sleeping. However, thoseoccurring in the phase REM(Rapid Eye Movement) which aremore elaborated can beremembered better 40. RECALLINGDREAMS 41. Recalling Dreams A common practice that permitsincrement the recalling ofdreams, is to keep a log book ofdreams, a notebook, a journal, close to our bed; so as soon aswe wake up, we can stamp inpaper the dreams, impressions,or thoughts that we may have atthat moment. 42. Recalling Dreams It is recommended whenwaking up not to move andkeep the eyes closed, as thiscan help to recall better thedream that we have just had. 43. Recalling Dreams It is better to write down yourdream as soon as possible. If we wait to log the dreamlater during the day, we canforget a great part of it, or themost important parts of thedream. 44. Recalling Dreams Keep in mind that sometimesduring your daily activities, something that you do orhappens or hear can bring toyour mind dreams that havebeen forgotten. 45. Recalling Dreams In such a case it is stronglyrecommended to take note ofeverything that comes to ourmind, including what made usremember the dream. 46. Recalling Dreams Another technic to recalldreams is to pray to God togrant you a good recallingmemory so when you wake upyou are able to remember yourdream and write it down. 47. Recalling Dreams Another technique is beforesleeping to order your heart towake you up on a gentle waywhen the dream is closed. Thisis something that Dr MarkVirkler recommends and itseffective. 48. SYMBOLSANDMEANING 49. Symbols and meaning It is very important afterwriting down your dream, toregister the symbolism ofeach one of the Importantelements in the dream. 50. Symbols and meaning Example: I dreamed of a friend that Ihave not seen in 10 years. 51. Symbols and meaning Once made the effort toremember who is the personof the dream, write downwhat this person symbolizes,or what this personrepresents for you in thedream. 52. Symbols and meaning This person could represent: Tenacity, discipline, Wisdom, courage, Some abilities or gifting, Authority, etc. 53. Symbols and meaning Another examples are: Objects, animals, events, vehicles, colors, etc. What do they bring to our mind? What key words can weassociate with them? 54. Auto analysis Questionsthat we needto make ourselvesabout our dreams. 55. Auto analysisHow is myemotional statewhen awakening? 56. Auto analysisWhat didI ask to dreambefore goingto sleep? 57.
