IN CONSTRUCTION
Driller/Blaster’s drill holes, assemble, plant, and detonate explosives to loosen earth, rock, stumps,
or to demolish structures to facilitate removal. They examine mass, composition, structure, and
location of object to be blasted and determine the kind of explosive to be used as well as marking
the location of charge holes for drilling.
SALARY: $36,800 to $64,000
• Follow sets of rules in order to arrange things or actions in a specific order
• Keep the hand and arm steady, often shifting between two or more actions
• Identify when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong, solving problems with Mathematics
• Completion of secondary school is usually required• On-the-job training is provided
• Experience as a heavy equipment operator may be required for drillers
• Experience as a blaster helper in surface mining and quarrying
• Provincial blasting licence is usually required for blasters
EDUCATION:
DESCRIPTION:
• Operate drilling equipment to drill blast holes in rock, typically for highway and heavy civil projects
• Operate drill equipped with auger to drill holes for building foundations or pilings
• Read diagrams, lay out drill pattern, determine depth and diameter of blast holes, and conduct field
tests to determine the explosives required as per codes, specifications and engineering recommendations• Assemble primer charges; load explosives in blast holes; connect electrical wires and detonating cords or fuses
connect to blasting machines; detonate charges
• May operate air-track, or other hydraulic drilling equipment to drill blast holes

This apprenticeship will include training in the handling, storage, transportation and use of explosives and accessories in a variety
f construction sites. Surface blasters hook up and fire a variety of explosives, plan and design blast patterns, handle misfires
nd missed holes, dispose of unwanted explosives, and supervise blasting helpers and the security of the blast area.

1You can begin by applying for a job directly in the Civil Construction Industry. Once you begin working with a Construction Companyor Contractor you will quickly gain the necessary skills needed to advance yourself through in-house, work-as-you-learn training.
You can enrol in a University, Community College or a Private Technical School to study and prepare yourself for a Career in CivilConstruction. All of this information may be found through our website.
You can get started through an apprenticeship program by combining on the job training with technical in-class training gainingexperience and increased responsibility. You can work in the industry, get paid and work towards earning credits.
